I love James Earl Jones in this. His Character as Joffrey Joffer is just GREAT. He played the king so well, but not the overhaughty stereotype of any whitewashed netflix movie with christmas theme. There's still that arrogance of a king, but also the love and care for his son. He even tells all the guests for the wedding that they can go home now cuz his son is gonna go on a trip for 40 days and then return for the marriage by THEN.... or yelling ''LET THEM WAIT! - I am talking to my son~', showing he puts the focus on his son before even the guests for a royal wedding, etc. etc. And the fact he is able to see his tradition-covered blindness. Especially after his wife tells him 'I thought you were the king...' after he said 'who am I to change tradition'. It was just great that there's so much character to... well the characters.

i feel obligated to say that the picture of New York in this movie was because the royals chose a part of new york that was at that time a slum and a nest for crime and at least colorful characters but just happened to be Queens. Openin credit song was played by African band Ladysmith Black Mombazo and the song was an adaptation of the song M'bube. Lion sleeps tonight was indeed inspired version of M'bube. "The song was later made internationally famous, by The Weavers as "Wimoweh" in 1948 and then as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the Tokens in 1961. Miriam Makeba's recording of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in the 1960s helped popularize the genre and establish the singing tradition. But it was Robert John’s rendition of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” that is the most well-known, reaching #3 on the US charts, and selling more than one million copies for which he was awarded a gold disc by the Recording Industry Association of America." -Wikipedia. In this movie Eddie Murphy played four(4) roles: Prince Akeem, Clarence, Saul and Randy Watson. Arsenio Hall also had four(4) roles: Semmi, Morris, Extremely Ugly Girl in the bar and Reverend Brown.

For another reverse fairy tale, consider Roman Holiday with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. In this film, I loved the restoration of the Duke Brothers from Trading Places, when the prince gives them lots of money, and we hear one of them saying "We're back!" In hindsight, seeing James Earl Jones with a lion wardrobe in a movie just a few years before he was Mufasa in the Lion King was great. Eddie and Arsenio played so many characters, mostly in the barber shop. And yes, the nudity and profanity limits the reach of the movie. It's why it's easier for this to show on cable TV channels that clean things up a bit. I still wish more films were created more cleanly to reach wider audiences and be enjoyed as a family, rather than limiting their reach to some adults. And for those that want to get trashy, I'm still surprised that DVDs can come with all sorts of languages, but that it seems like no one has thought to have a professionally recorded clean version without the profanity, where they could have the original actors recording alternate lines, instead of the way cable TV ends up with other people dubbing in and not always matching up well.

The actor who plays the father of the "arranged" bride @ 3min 15 seconds is the same guy who played the Jamaican gang leader in Predator 2!

Eddie plays several characters in this movie. Like the old guy in the barbershop.
