Joanna's husband, Jamie, had to cancel his 2006 Deep in History lecture because he was at a wedding for a Royal Family member, who had to renounce his claim to the British throne because he had become a Catholic. The roots of why a Catholic could not be a British monarch go all the way back to the English Reformation, and "Bloody Mary" Tudor's part in that period of history are the topic of Joanna's talk. Enjoy her wit, humor and insight!

Diane Sic gala I have a question for you why has it been that historically Anglicans really had no problem calling themselves Protestant? But many seem to get offended nowadays why do you suppose that is?

That a good question. Yes my sister gets a little offended when I say the word Protestant. I think they believe that the reformation happened so long ago. Now almost 500 yrs ago. My sister and her husband are so kind to me and take me to the Catholic Church when I visit them.

What I like about Mary’s attempt at reviving English Catholicism is that she tried her best NOT to cause more upheaval. She only removed a few bishops from power but tried to get her whole country to repent.

Well , as much as Mary is one of my favorite monarchs and I’m glad her reign is being re-examined and the old bad Whig version of history is being discarded , this speaker is glossing over the burnings just a tad. At first , those burned were prominent Protestant leaders under Edward VI but there were also quite uneducated people who could not explain themselves what a Sacrament was and were naturally confused over the rapid shifts and changes in religion in Tudor England over a short period of time (1534-1558). Let’s face what we can’t really defend

I think it would be good for you to at least offer a source when you criticize the speaker like this. Otherwise it seems like your word over hers

Good question.. I think I always thought of the Anglican Church as half way between Protestant and Catholic. We call the Church. The Church of England in England. Went to a little village Church growing up in Norfolk England. Our Church was low Church. Now when I go home my sister Church is more middle Church. Then of course there is the High Church. My grandmother would tell me about the Oxford Movement in the mid 1800.s my Grandmother had this funny little saying if one is High Church you neither fish or fowl. Of course the churches that are now Church of England were all built before the Reformation. So you do feel you almost in a Catholic Church. My sister might disagree with at. When Henry V111 broke from Rome. He still thought of him self as a Catholic.

Yes. The Catholic Church is only about 10 percent in England. But to be honest I did not come across anti Catholicism until I came to Northeastern Pa.

SO MUCH FACT HAS BEEN IGNORED IN THIS "SCHOLARLY" LECTURE. I was left in shock. The mention of Elizabeth being illegitimate is completely unfounded & beyond ridiculous.that charge comes from Sandor; who never met Anne Boleyn & was a Catholic recusant. This was the third lecture I have watched today. At first, I had no idea this was a Roman Catholic based forum, but once I realized that, I was still eager to watch and hear and , possibly, learn. I expected a certain amount of slant-historians of every possible viewpoint are still discussing the reign of Henry VII & certainly his wives & his impact & policies. Again, nothing new or unexpected. But to call Elizabeth's legitimacy into question is, frankly, inexcusable. There is no evidence AT ALL that Elizabeth was not Henry's child. Just as there's no evidence Anne Boleyn was somehow the architect of Henry's policy or determination to break from the Old Church. Once Henry fixed his attention on Anne Boleyn, she had little choice- comply or totter off into spinsterhood. Clearly, she threw her hat in with Henry's-; & with the full force of capabilities, but only when it was clear she had no other choice. Again, I'm ok with some of the statements that I've seen during these lectures being called "facts". But you are WAY off the mark when it comes to Anne Boleyn

The question of Elizabeth's legitimacy is not whether Henry VIII was the father, but rather whether she was conveived before he was married to Ann Boleyn. Moreover, even when Henry VIII did marry Anne Bolyen, it was while his true wife, Catherine of Aragon was still alive, so by Catholic lights was a bigamus marriage anyway. If Elizabeth was illegitimate, the next in line for the throne was have been Mary Queen of Scots, whom Elizabeth had imprisoned, then executed in 1587. To execute a Royal was unheard of at the time, and Europe was aghast at Elizabeth's actions, which (and this is something that many historians fail to mention) was largely responsible for the Spanish Armada the following year.
