In this Deep in History lecture, Marcus looks at the series of events and ideas that made the 16th century ripe for a massive split in European Christianity. From disillusionment with Church authority, to the boom of literacy in the Renaissance era, to
the rise of individualism, Marcus explores the fundamental shift in the way Europe looked at what it meant to be Christian during the days leading up to the Reformation.

I just love these talks! Deep in History and Deep in Scripture I love listening to them. Growing up in the U.S.A. I never knew any of this history of the reformation and what happened to Catholics so this is an eyeopener. Please keep it up!

This has been so so helpful. As much Protestant church learns of me starting RCIA in 6 weeks, I will be bombarded with a lot of, “well, what about …?”. This gives me hope of not getting defensive. Thank you!!

Marcus Grodi...you have blessed us with truth and I thank you. Great perspective. Great points for us to ponder. May we all be more true to the gospel by seeking the truth through the Church established by Christ himself....the pillar and foundation of truth. A holy, apostolic, universal Church...the Catholic Church.

Wow, this is a very good presentation and a good opening to the main topic. Marcus gave the correct questions a Catholic has to reflect on with regards to knowing what is the right answer or right thing to do when faced with these issues of the Church.

It was not the apostles who changed the day of worship to Sunday, that happened later, for political reasons.

What happens when the Church hierarchy starts to preach heresy? What should the laity do? Should they go along to get along, or should they put back? There is a valid reason why you have Marian vision chasers and why you have people who don't trust the latest popes. They see - with the aid of modern technology - new traditions and teachings and conduct which deviate from the 2000 years of Church teachings. More importantly, they see that these things contradict Christ himself. At least these distracted followers are trying to stay within the Church. The Church, beginning with the apostles, was never given the authority to contradict Christ's teachings, which is what we have seen worldwide since the early 1900s.

The lord caused the conversion of the Aztecs as a response to the Reformation. The answer to the reformation is Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Unpopular opinion: (Actually, fact) the celebration of the Mass towards the people in the West actually predates the celebration of it away from the people. This is a factual statement, and you can check the history. Now, I honestly don't care how it is celebrated, that does NOT affect the validity of the Eucharist.

I don’t think that there ever was a need for a reform in the Catholic Church in the early years of the church but a correction of false teachings that probably was circulating around the church at times
