Red Alert 2 is 20 years old this year - and it's still regarded as one of the best, if not THE best Command & Conquer game in the series history. While we all hope to see it remastered like it's predecessor, that may never materialize, so we might be stuck with what we've got. So, let's see if what we've got is still worth playing in 2020.

So, Unfortunately, at exactly 12:22 into the video, my girlfriend asked me to go and help her with something, so I hit pause. Also unfortunately, she came back into the room and saw the computer screen before I did, the first I knew of it was "what the hell are you watching"...Took a bit of explaining! lol

Red Alert 2. This is the VERY first game I ever played, and I was hooked on gaming ever since. Even the installation of the game was iconic, from the disc that is. I legitimately thought I had only like 20 seconds to input my game key in the installation screen lest I want to be liquidated by seals. (I was very young at the time.) I unfortunately misplaced the old discs... I did buy the Ultimate Collection from Origin, and personally, I think it is a GREAT deal. It has yet another game which shaped my childhood, C&C Generals and Zero Hour. Proud to say I am still playing both Red Alert 2 and C&C Generals til this day, but I have been running into constant display issues and random crashes with Red Alert 2 in particular.. I really hope that there would be a proper remaster for this game in the future.

Everything in RA2 was excellent in terms of game mechanics and gameplay, though the story was just okay and some of the unit/building designs were weird. RA 1 was a very dark and gritty game (both Allied and Soviet endings are very dark), RA 2 became funny and whacky(many of us back then did not like this).. and they turned Tanya into eye candy... though the game eventually grew on me and I still play it through its MODS (Mental Omega, Rise of the East & Red Resurrection). It's one of Westwood's best games though, hands down. I hope they remaster it.

@@warsmithalaric I started with Red Alert 1, although I was very young at the time.. I greatly prefer Tanya in Red Alert 2.. I get the eye candy complaint, but she has a ton more personality Red Alert 2. I also thing the wackiness is at a perfect balance in Red Alert 2, to the point where it is certainly silly, but still serious enough to where you can get invested. I feel like the third game went a bit overboard in the department though.

I first played it at my grandma's old PC in 2006 as a little kid. This was a Russian localisation without cut scenes, but since then it has been one of my favourite games and a great source of nostalgia and childhood memories. A couple of weeks ago, I installed it on my new laptop and all I can say about it is that it is one of the best games I've ever played.

I’m interested in the Russian version of the game… so did they just cut the cut scenes or was there some more censorship involved? I’m intrigued… did Red Alert 1 get the same treatment?
@IlliaYandovskyi
@IlliaYandovskyi Жыл бұрын
@@stoops187 As it was the case with the most games of the early 2000s, the Russian-language localisation of the game was sold as a pirated copy. I am not sure there was an official distributor (I guess not), but even then it wouldn’t have had an official Russian localisation. But I'm 100% sure that the absence of the cutscenes had nothing to do with the censorship - most likely the guys just didn't bother dubbing them; or I just may have had a bad copy of the game with the cutscenes removed. P.S. I'm a Ukrainian, but because of the strong influence of the Russian language in the country (and little knowledge of English) we used to play games in Russian - first with pirate dubbing, then with an official Russian localisation. Games in Ukrainian localisation were basically nowhere to be found, but recently things have started to change, as our gaming communities have become more aware of our culture and started boycotting Russian language and distributors. Some of the new releases are being localised in Ukrainian language, but there’s still a long way to go. What I wanted to try is to make my own Ukrainian dubbing for the RA2, but I need to figure out how to change the voice tracks in the programme files :)

Unit veterancy was actually first introduced in Tiberian Sun, not Red Alert 2. When playing through the campaign, you will notice some units have two bars or a star at the start of the mission. If you can micro your units well enough, some of your units will eventually get promoted. But the game doesn't notify you of this in anyway and the bonuses are not really something you would write home about. I believe at max rank they get passive health regen and a small damage bonus but I could be wrong. I never explored how veterancy works in TS extensively. When RA2 rolled in, the veterancy system was streamlined. It was easier to rank up your units and bonuses were much more rewarding compared to TS.

RA2 is the one where they have a passive health regen. Tib Sun's vet system is... weird. They get specific perks at elite, but never elaborates what they are. Some of them are helpful, such as infantry auto-scattering (and thus rendering them nigh-invulnerable to crushing), to objectively usel, such as the Wolverine, whose perk makes them immune to Tiberium veins! ...a feature it already had regardless of rank. (Also some elites explode upon death. Because that's what you want your hard-earned elites to do.) Also they have to kill x10 their unit value as opposed to RA2's x3 (or x6, I can't recall). Not an easy task.

17:45 actually, unit veterancy was implemented in tiberian sun. It's just that it's very hard to get, and it doesn't do a lot unless you get them up to heroic status. Interestingly specific units gain new abilities, like for example, heroic titans can detect stealth. In RA2 not only is it easier to get but it gives certain units massive boosts in firepower along with special abilities, which is really pretty fun and adds a lot to the gameplay.

The mods and map editor were a blast. I used the map editor to create 'The Ridge.' I raised elevation from top to bottom of the map then populated it with neutral units from all factions. Then I covered blank spots with trees. On each side of the map were on place to deploy Con Yards. To help were massive ore fields. There were con yards to capture. In order for the players to attack each other they would have to cut through The Ridge. It took masses of troops on each side to get close enough to start taking units out, especially since there were a lot of snipers. It was just like watching Pickett's Charge. You just saw you troops melt away. Frequent saves were necessary because computers of the day weren't powerful enough. I wish they would update RA2 and Yuri's Revenge because computers now have the power to handle that map.

Amazing campaign, cutscenes, you can clearly see that some humor was put there as well Too bad that the real life premier alex romanov has died like 10 years ago, makes you understand how old this game is People are still playing it in singleplayer and in CnC PVP or COOP against AI. What i love about RA 2 and Yuri's revenge is how much effort they put in the cutscenes and special projections while you are in battle, yeah it's a bit silly and campy, but you can still feel the dire situation on how you are being treated as the commander/general of the factions you are playing, like for example how Lt. Eva warmly greets you as commander, or how Lt. Zofia respects you as comrad general every time they debrief you, it really makes me feel like i am the head of a big faction leading a war, it's silly and campy, but at the same time, very serious and really enjoyable nonetheless~

Subscribed. You deserve it. I'm modding Red Alert 2 myself, these days, making custom units and vehicles. It's not the hardest thing to do, but takes some artistry and coding. But it's always enjoyable to see your creations come to life. -From the code, I can tell you that Veterancy boosts unit health, speed, rate of fire and damage. At full veterancy, they regenerate health as well.

17:38 Unit Veterancy was introduced in Tiberian Sun already, but it almost might as well not exist there, with the default amount of kills required for promotion being set absurdly high, at 10 times its production cost for each veterancy tier. 17:40 - Regarding unit veterency, it was actually Tiberian Sun that brought that feature to the series. Red Alert 2 though did highlight it and make it clearer to see and quicker to achieve. Yes, M.O. is a dark, and awkward mess. The building footprint guide has been made worse, there was nothing wrong with it in RA2. All new C&C seem to be dark lighting. Like the art dept was allowed too much power over gameplay dept and tried to make it moody. It just makes my eyes hurt and have to turn screen up to maximum brightness. RA2 is so clear to see what is going on and the viewing angle and distance are perfect. All the unit designs are nice and the environments had so much variety and depth that all seemlessly blended together where as even future titles I felt were a bit lacking and bland. Not to mention they had uphill and downhill animations for every direction for vehicles. Just a buncha small things that create such a nice stylized "2d" aesthetic that just works.

I have long told people about how perfectly RA2 blended camp and seriousness. Where RA3, imo, leaned into the camp side a bit too much. It didnt have that grounded feel that helps to heighten the ridiculous aspects. While I did play RA1 as a child, the MAIN reason I bought the remaster is hopefully to get enough units shifted that they remaster RA2. Even without a remaster I still play the campaigns at least once a year. I would love it to be fully optimized for more modern hardware.

Red alert 2 was definitely a fantastic Red Alert game for me, being someone who had only started with Generals and Red Alert 3, I found it to be the most flexible in moddability as known as Mental Omega, which was THE most popular mod for Red Alert 2 and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t played it yet, bonus if you also like the animeish aspect of it. I also found the older games to have that “Westwood” charm to it, and the later games that have an “EA” feel to it, especially Red Alert 3 where it really shows completely erasing the Yuri faction from the Red Alert timeline opting for a weeby Rising Sun.
