The minis are great, the terrain is great and the little rulebook and the Command Manual are great. I'll never be a fan of the cardboard battle mat things, but it's better than the paper mats in the other boxes and for a starter set it's fine, I guess. I am glad I bought it.

I'm beginner in table-top games, collecting and painting, I basically have never done it before, but I know more than the basics about the lore of 40k so I picked this set with recruit edition and paints, I hope I won't have troubles with assembling and painting the miniatures. Thanks for this video. :)

Thank you very much for this video! It was able to finally answer my question of if the game map which came with it was the nice cardboard foldout version or the cheap an crappy paper foldout which comes in the Recruit & Elite boxes. Now I know, hands down if I'm going to pick up one of these three starting boxes it's going to be the Commander Box. Yeah, the cardboard backed foldout map, terrain, full rule book w/fluff & Mini sized only rules book seems to be worth the extra $66.00 here in the States. Thank you again Miss Naomi! Stay safe!

thanks for the review! I am sad they went back to the white dice. The clear ones that came with Dark Imperium and Soul Wars were so much better. The older white dice were not made well as a lot of the time the plastic wasn't melted all the way through (if you broke one open that is). This lead to dice that wouldnt be completely random as the unmelted plastic messed up the balance. Clear dice, you can clearly see they are melted lol.

They are objectives. They are deployment points for the training scenarios. They did the same thing with the 8th Edition starter sets too. The scenario tells you what models to put with the letter/number and off you go. You can get rid of that in the game by plopping scatter terrain on it.

For Marines, its 1330 ish, give or take 20pts for Plasma pistols options. But you have 4 HQ's and only 3 troops. So you will either be 1250pts as a battalion, or you take 2 detachments. If you play Open war it wont matter. You need about 700pts to make a 2k list. It would b good to get 800 so you have options other than 4 HQ's.

The board is 22x30" which is half the size needed for a 500 pt game. That's my big problem with this as a starter, is that outside of the included tutorial missions, new players will need the $90 terrain box to have the right sized board even for the smallest of games, bringing the total starter cost to $255. At least the included board isn't just thin paper like the two lower cost starters. The big question on the mini rulebook is whether or not the text is readable by grognard eyes. Less weight, smaller size is of no use if I can't read it without a magnifying glass. The terrain is decent looking, but the majority of it is not LOS blocking and since you need two sets for the smallest of games, that's a lot of what is essentially barricades.
@cartouchator
@cartouchator 4 жыл бұрын
Unless I am mistaken, but I am nearly certain the board included is the size recommended for 500 points games from the main rulebook. 2 of them would make for 1000 points and 4 for 2000 points. As for the text, it is readable, they removed some margins and pictures and the font itself isn't really that much smaller than on the full sized book. Also in 9th edition you can make any terrain line blocking, players choose terrain rules for each terrain piece before the game starts, just make the larger pieces obscuring :)
@barrywonderdog
@barrywonderdog 4 жыл бұрын
@@cartouchator No, the rules require a 44"x30" minimum board for Combat Patrol/Incursion games (these approximate to 500 and 1000 points respectively), and the board size is 22"x30". Technically, you also need more terrain pieces for both kinds of game. This edition allows for an ad hoc 'kitchen table skirmish', and some scaling down of larger games to accommodate. The problem is terrain is so intrinsic to the new edition, simply knocking out a new Dark Imperium style box (more units and HQs, no mat or terrain) isn't enough. Making a Command edition that satisfies the troop demands and the terrain/mat demands to produce even a Combat Patrol game would require the equivalent of two Command boxes, and the cost would be prohibitive as an entry point. I guess GW could make a General's Edition which was basically Indomitus and a combination of the terrain from Command and the terrain from the Kill Team box plus some consistent playing mats. That would be an absolutely amazing Combat Patrol/Incursion package... for the exceptionally well-heeled.
@mac40k92
@mac40k92 4 жыл бұрын
@@cartouchator I don't have my Indomitus box yet, but unless the full rulebook differs from the core rules GW released for free, the board size for Combat Patrol and Incursion is the same. BATTLE SIZE BATTLEFIELD SIZE (Minimum) Combat Patrol/Incursion 44" x 30"

It's a cracking set for people just getting into it but for veterans I'm not quite sure. Those cardboard tiles are better than a very thin vinyl sheet of fixed size but I prefer good old rubber / mouse mat style big battle mats. I wouldn't mind that mini version of the rules book, my poor arms with the Indomnitus set one.

Yeah, the main rule book is a beast to really use. I think this little rule book will see more use at the actual gaming tables! As for the game board- it is a big boon for those of us who want to game at home and don't have an appropriate mat for 40K. This was one of the things that made me go with this version of the starters.

I just don't really see the value in this box. Dark Imperium gave you two forces of around 800pts, as well as the hardback lore/rulebook, dice, and some rulers. While there wasn't any terrain, the value for each army was well over $200. This meant you didn't really need to expand the armies themselves right away and could focus on buying terrain/paint. Plus to hit 1000 for either side would only require 1 or 2 purchases depending on the unit. With this set, you basically get 350pts per side, so not even enough for a regular 500pt game. You also get 1/4 of a standard games mat and 1/4 of a standard games terrain. This means that at the very least someone would have to buy the terrain pack and the double board set, which means you need to spend another $140. This isn't even including paint, which if you buy the new starter paint set would run another $40, plus $15 - $20 for primer. You're looking at potentially $400 to get started within this ecosystem, plus another hundred or so if you buy the Elite set to expand your forces. The terrain is gorgeous, but there is tons of great terrain for far cheaper, not to mention it's not that hard to turn some cans and boxes into legitimate Warhammer terrain. Not for me, though I will be buying a couple boxes of the recruit edition to give as gifts to friends/family I know are interested in trying out the hobby.
@cartouchator
@cartouchator 4 жыл бұрын
9th edition introduced easier ways to manage skirmish sized games by changing the battlefield size depending on the size of each army. The size of the board provided is their standard up to 500 points board size and also happens to be exactly the kill team battleboard size. This makes it very easy (much easier than dark imperium at the time) to buy one single box, and play the game without needing to buy anything else,and see if you like the game or not. You don't need to improvise or buy terrain and a game mat, you just buy a box and play with the contents inside. This therefore makes for a much more complete feeling starter set. Is it good value for money? Maybe not as much as dark imperium, but is it a better starter set? Yes, it is. I can see many people buying the terrain set separately to play kill team too, perfect size ! Such a shame that as a result, death guard players don't have an entry box to the army anymore, they really should release a death guard start collecting box !

@@cartouchator 30x22 is extremely small for units like Bikers. This also isn't a kill team starter, its a 40k starter. You'd have to buy the kill team book and tokens on top of this if that's what you're going for.
