I was thinking of getting the necron paint set just because I fancied painting up a few of those t-800's. After looking at it I went for a recruit edition box and added the new paints. So I get more necrons, some smurfs and worked out better for me as I have all of the other paints.

Nice that they are putting full bottles in the paint kits now, instead of the 3ml pots that were in the last round of kits. That makes these sets interesting values, very useful to newcomers who want to stay with the "official" paint line and don't have a lot of paints already.

you can also use the other end of the brush for the basing material or something like that. It's not perfect but you can easily stick it under the sink and wipe it off after to get the basing material off.

For a lot of the texture paints and such, a good option for brushes for them is to go to the dollar store and get a pack of the extremely cheap ones intended for little kids and the kids watercolor book type brushes. I tend to end up using those for a lot of basing options and with things like spackle if I'm using it with basing or terrain

Hi ​ Sword 'n' Steele First of all great video you are the first youtuber that actually spoke about this paint sets ! You are helping me a ton . I am new to the hobby and i have order the paints + tools kit . Is it possible for you to show up what kind of paint schemes can be done with that big kit ? There a a lot of videos how to paint the new models. But non that are actually using the paints from the kit only. Or maybe give a suggestion what ells is good to ad to this paints. I am still waiting for my minis but i am scared that i am gonna ruin them if i don't use the correct paints for a certain scheme. Thank you in advance.

All the citadel tools I've used have been really good quality, even though they're a bit expensive, so I reckon the Paint and Tool Set would be the best buy out of the 3 boxes.

Get the starter paints because its a money saver and comes with washes. The only downside is the paints are in a box wrapped in plastic and unless you convince the shop owner to let you open and inspect the paints then you could get dry paint. Some shops don't shake the paints regularly so they separate and sometimes they dry out. I just bought a brand new pot of averland sunset and new brushes got home and the paint was junk. Its almost 8 bucks for a pot and its like 8 bucks for brushes so its not cheap. And you want a good product t.

TBH best way of saving money on paints is looking at other ranges. Vallejo, P3. Green Stuff World, Pactra, Tamiya... GW make several good paints (technical and metalics stand out in particular), but other brands are wort exploring too. And yes, they also do discount sets. Tools (not brushes, tho You still can do better and/or cheaper) are big nope to me tho. They are way, way overpriced.

True. I moved from gw paints some time ago and switched them for Vallejo and Army Painter (washes). Only thing i'm regretting is that i didn't done it earlier.

I think any reasonable painter should have paints from other manufacturers in their collection. I predominately use Scale 75, but still use Citadel, Vallejo, Reaper & AK.

This is a set for beginners and the colors are standard Ultramarine and Necron colors. All of these are great utility colors. (Okay, Corax White kinda sucks) Even ignoring the tools completely, if you buy this set on Ebay, you're paying less than $3 a pot. That's a great deal for paints that are at least equal or better in quality than Vallejo or Reaper, generally. And you don't have to waste time and money trying to find the right shade for a classic 40K look. As for the tools, these all make great backups. This is a great set and an easy recommend for beginners. My nephew will be getting one this Xmas.

Arteza paints. Best value. Metallic box is fantastic, also iridescent, also regular paints. Mix with Golden or Liquitex medium. Question why you ever paid 5+ dollars for a single color. Money back guarantee on their products. That is why I decided to try. 0 risk. Don't like a GW paint you bought? Too bad, buyer beware.

I've been using those clippers since GW first released them in 2006-2007. They are the best ones GW has ever sold. I was really sad when they dropped them from the normal line. Sadly I had to get another brand (Tamiya) when they became unavailable. SOOO glad I can get them in these paint sets now. I'll be picking one up again soon I think.

Thinking of getting the Elite Edition+Paints/Tools Set. Never played WH40K but the lore is cool and brutal, just afraid iam gonna mess up the painting since i am crap at drawing anything more advanced then a stick figure.

Having bought a couple of these paint/tool sets in the past I can say they are definitely good value, especially if bought from a 3rd party retailer with a discount. However; from my experience the 'starter' paint brush is absolutely terrible. Even with meticulous brush care, by the time you finish base-coating the three minis in the box the bristles will have begun to turn over and the brush will permanently lose its tip. The other tools are quite good. Seems like a good range of paints for necrons/ultramarines and it includes a personal favourite of mine, Averland Sunset, which is wonderful as a base coat when it comes to painting any kind of yellow.

All of these look like a pretty decent deal vs. buying individually. The clippers in the tool set look nice and beefy. I was impressed by that! Odd question, why do some of the pots come with a white lid? I'm in the U.S. and I don't think I have ever seen those at my local shops. The colors are the same, just not with white tops. I can see myself buying a paint set, even with figures, like the Nekron even though I do not play 40k (I do like their look :D ) to save on the individual pricing; especially with technical paints being a part of the bundle. The white tops are for certain metallics, they cost about 20% more than a regular pot but they are just about worth it in my experience, a bit brighter and smoother than the regular ones.

Another great and informative video. Such a shame the 3 marines come with the Ultrasmurf logo sculpted on. It kinda limits the customer base of that set to just either new players or existing Ultrasmurf players. Also with the Necron set it would have been better if they subbed out the Ababon Black for Leadbelcher and the Agrax Earthshade for Nuln Oil. And a nice addition to the tool set would have been the texture applicator they sell seeing as all 3 sets come with that grey texture. All 3 of those sets are an amazing bargain but those are just the few critiques I noticed. But the inclusion of the micro mold line remover is great. I might just pick up the paint and tool set just for the mini tools to kinda put together a painting and building bug out box for projects on the go.

The fantasy and 40k essential sets give a good range of paints as most of them are unique to each other with only about four paints in both. So if you want a just under 100 bucks buy in to get a good range of paints both options work great.

I agree although i prefer the AoS Paint/Tools set rather than the Citadel Essentials as it has the moldline remover and retributor armor, then i just buy the missing paints individually for my ultrasmurf army 😆

The clippers and line remover look the same as the ones in previous paint sets. I use and love those clippers. The line remover is small but better than using a hobby knife. The overlap in paint colors is disappointing, but hopefully the easy build minis will be made available separate soon. I'm looking forward to building some Necrons for Kill Team.

Great value but only if you're painting blue space marines and Necrons... maybe you could also pull off T'au with this set. The one thing I'm really missing in these sets is Ork skin green... yoou can pretty much do a basic paintjob for most major factions with these set... except for Orks. WAAAAGH!

Oh, its a shame the assault intercessors come with the ultramarine chapter markings as part of the pauldron molds makes it more work to get them to stand in for other chapters... Not very beginner friendly in that regard. EDIT: It is nice you get full size paint pots, rather than the mini pots in the old paint set though.

Depends on the colour of choice. The base are mostly thicker, the shade and tessaract glow are very liquid, the layer colours are somewhere inbetween. The astrogranit is thick, but it needs to be for its crackle effect. Since these sets are new, you dont have to worry about "died" colours atm.

As all other stated: Very informative on this topic. But a slight mishap is in this video: Only the Shade (Agrax Earthshade) and the technical Astrogranite are usually in a bigger pot. Tessaract Glow is in the normal size bottle. Also the Paints and Tools Set contained a basecoat brush, while the others had a starter brush in them. Both are very reliable and if you dont mistreat them badly you can have them for a long time (I have mine for about 25 years now, and if I havent mistreaded the starter brush it still might hold its tip up until today, the basecoat brush is still in use thought) But as far as I see it: If you return to paiting, get the Paints and Tools set. If you dont have the Conquest magazin you might want to get the Assault Intercessors + Paint set. If you start playing Necrons you might want the Necron Warrior + Paints set. So unless you have half empty bottles, or you need more than half of the colours , these paint sets are not for you.

Thats incorrect... tesseract glow is in a lareger bottle normally. 18ml pot to be precise.

Everyone hates the pots that GW uses for their paints. Why they do not switch over to dropper bottles like every other miniatures paint company is beyond me. Oh wait, it's GW, they do what they want!

They really don't last that long. I got 1/3 of my paints (the ones in the new pots) crossed link on me. All the is left is a coagulated blob of paint with some medium separated... God bless Vallejo, scale 75 and green stuff world. Best paints, better droppers

The assault marine paint set will not get you the ultramarine color scheme. There is no paint for the metal parts and Baltazaar gold is a brass looking color. Not bright gold, such as it is in the paint scheme.

If it works for you, great, but it's not advised to do that. It's way easier to get smooth coverage and not obscure details with thinned paint. Also, it's more efficient, as your paint goes further when thinned.

My issue with these sets are that they’re good value...but only if you get one, as they repeat some of the paints. Not very happy about the texture paints either, they could have added another base or layer paint instead. Still, getting the paints and tools one, as just getting the paints would be more expensive.

Appreciate the effort that goes into these video. But these kits are the worst way to START playing a GW game, all up you get (in AU$) $38.50 worth of paint and a $12.50($51) brush. Anyone who plays the game or collects the figures knows that the clipables are garbage, its why GW created a whole new sprue for it so it doesn't undervalue their $10 per figure range. Also you can do NOTHING with three figures but paint them, buying paints for hobby reasons, if that's the case hit the discount outlets and by some figurines. If these figures are to game with and you cant do that with 3 figures. These figures are $3 each (on a 10c sprue) to round out the cost to $60AU. Best start would be to avoid where possible purchasing any GW gear except that which is completely essential to you playing the game. Other paint on the market has the same range and comes in 17ml pots not the 12ml GW pots, and my local numbers show that they are 10% cheaper for 30% more paint. So to say that these kits provide any value is only true within the GW bubble to which value is not on their mission statement.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. The tool is extremely low quality and sometimes is even bent at the tips. The citadel brushes are low quality too. You can get much better and cheaper in your hobby store specialized for painters, which we have multiple at least here in Berlin, Germany. The sets are in my experience not worth the cost.
