You made a great call. I'm a veteran 40k player who hasn't played for over 12 years and I'm getting back into the hobby. This box has opposing forces, terrain and a mini rulebook...which if I'm not mistaken, will only be missing all the (beautiful) artwork and won't be missing any rules - the full book is $70. Throw in the awesome terrain and this is just a super cool kit and a great value. The only other spend will be on paints and modelling supplies - so budget anywhere from $45 to $80 more, and you're golden. Enjoy!!!

Matthew Kulchar there are some great tutorial videos on Warhammer TV that can help you get started, you don’t have to go crazy with the details on the minis to get them ready for the table. Just a base coat of your preferred color and a few detail colors and you can play. As you become more comfortable with your painting skills you can always go back and add more detail, weathering, decals and basing. I don’t think most players are going to have a problem with a basic paint job as you are just starting out. My very first game was back in 3rd edition and my opponent had just barely built and primed his minis with a few having some base painting done. If there is a Warhammer store near you they do offer painting classes when Covid isn’t a factor. GW also released today some introductory painting sets, one for space marines with 3 figures, 6 paint colors and a basic paint brush, all you need is primer and you are good to go.

I like how Rob put it. This is probably the best set ever for people getting started. Starting without terrain is kinda crappy and doesn't really present the whole game very well. Yes you get a lot of models, but very few people go out and buy or make decent terrain early so it coming in the starter set is a must. I got 6 containers from the kill team set when I start in February and we still slam those down every game because they are so useful. 8th is no doubt better if you don't need terrain, but I would say by far this is the best set for new people hands down.

Except the value of this box is severely lacking. That's terrain for 1/4 of a board, with not enough play space for both armies to do much but sit still and shoot each other. You can get a tables worth of terrain for under $50 with TTCombat or spend around $80 for two Pegasus kits and some scatter from EnderToys. You'll be spending around that just to get these armies up to 500pts, and a fair amount more just to hit 1000pts.
@JohnnyLeyenda4 жыл бұрын
@@sackofpeas2470 It is a starter set. It's meant to get your feet wet with the game's features, not give you a table-worth of terrain right off the bat. A box's worth is relatively subjective, especially if you're not the target audience.

I still think 8 ed starters was better. Both "Know no Fear" and "Dark Imperium". More models and full hardcover corebook. Some would say that softcover rules are easier to transport, but why would new players transport their stuff if they don't yet have an army? And instead of an army they have terrain, which clubs have plenty of. Why? You can use books or mugs for your first games, why would you ever need terrain features? It would be better to have more units to make your first games more interesting, and learn to to play easier. I think both elite and recruit editions are good deals for newcomers. Though if there is any chance you can get Indomitus box for you to start your army - do it.

Spectre Plays To try out various aspects of the game and get a proper start for building an army? These starters are a joke. The recruit one is kind of okay - ish, but still... As a new player I don't want terrain. Not for that price, anyway. What I want is what everyone in the hobby is drawn to: cool looking miniatures, that I can paint and play a fun game with. I can replace the GW terrain easily, but replacing the miniatures is pretty much impossible without ruining the whole experience. No one is drawn to warhammer by friggin terrain. The more I think about it, the more I realize that the whole thing with "no, indomitus is not a REAL starter set" was just a huge scam. New players need a full rule book with lore in it, and they need the miniatures. Rest is easily acquired without paying huge sums of money.

Meh, you get enough terrain for a game on 1/4 of the official board size, which also means the bikes have little room to maneuver. The value is also seriously lacking, as even with the terrain this box is only around $200 value. For the same money, Dark Imperium gave two players armies that both closed in around 1000pts and the monetary value of the box was well over $400. If you've already got Indomitus, there really isn't much use for this set. Unless of course you want an extra unit of all of these. You can get terrain that's just as good for far cheaper or even just make some on your own. If anything, the Elite Box is probably your best bet, as it clocks in under $100 and the estimated price for the troops, destroyers, and bikes is probably around the $150 - $200 range (depending on how GW prices these kits when they get their full releases).

@sackofpeas24704 жыл бұрын
@@giovotek Indomitus was a starter set and a value far better than the Command Set. If you're looking for terrain, I'd recommend looking at Pegasus Terrain and EnderToys Terrain on Amazon. Pegasus has buildings that are easy to build and take up a good deal of space on a table, while EnderToys has a lot of no assembly required pieces of scatter terrain like broken walls, bunkers, and barricades. However, if you don't mind working with MDF (thin wood that's laser cut), TTCombat is king of value for just starting out. For $40 you can get both the Building and Ruins set, as well as the Ruin Sector set which gives you a big building, 11 ruined building corners (some being two levels), 8 barriers, and two storage containers that you can either stack or separate. That said, they have a whole section on their store for Sci-Fi Gothic terrain, which is basically designed with 40K in mind. They have tons of Imperium style buildings, Ork buildings, Eldar Buildings, and even some Necron styled buildings.

On the other hand if you know no one in the hobby and maybe you and your mate/sibling/SO are splitting the box to play together then sure yeah the terrain is going to be good and useful. It's also an alright Kill Team starter box minus...well the Kill Team specific stuff. Nab this box and the KT rules and use your own tokens and such and you've got yourself two usable (but rather boring and requiring some finagling with the Assault Intercessors) kill teams with the Necron Warriors and the Intercessors and probably enough terrain.

$60 for a set of ten troops of any faction in my opinion such a ridiculous price. I don’t even know how GW pulls these strings. Before it was $50 which is less yes, but still outrageous for ten PLASTIC models. So your telling me that two of these $60 box sets which equals to $120 which is around the same price as a starter box set has the same amount of content as these box sets? Such a prime example of GWs terrible pricing. The Space Marine Vanguard start collecting set which originally costed around $62 for 17 minutes which I would consider one of the better pricing for a starter army like that, has now jumped up to $99. Let that sink in. $99 for 17 minutes which once was $62. This is utterly ridiculous. (Thank the will of the Emperor! Just checked in on the price of the Vanguard box set on Amazon and it was finally reduced to $80 instead of $99. But still $80 is a little bit iffy, but I can’t complain because $80 is definitely better than $99)

Sure, it doesn't claim to be an army in a box though! It comes with rules, two opposing forces, terrain, and boards. If you want to make an army to bring to your local game store or whatever perhaps it isn't the best idea. But for someone just starting out, that wants to play some games with friends or family, I think it's great value and an awesome kit!

Unless you're totally new, don't have a gaming store nearby, and want to get friends or family sucked in and hooked by playing.

@@jeffs.morton6063 You can get the elite edition for around $90 online or depending on your FLGS. The $50 - 70 in savings can be spent on other terrain that's far cheaper and/or the paints, clippers, brushes, and primers a total newbie will need.
