Mitchell Sidebottom I didn't really say that trench warfare isn't a viable method these days. Yes, it can be used to great effect at times. However, what I mean is that it is not a primary strategy in warfare. World War I showed us the potential bad sides of Trench Warfare. The entire thing was essentially one big war of attrition. Yes, trenches can be useful, but they should not be a commonly used tactic.

Mitchell Sidebottom Admittedly, even though in like every single piece of official art or fanart it shows the Imperial Guard using trenches, it's not actually as widespread as it seems. The main ones who use it are probably the Mordians and the Death Korps of Krieg. The Kriegers basically want to die, so it makes sense. However, other IG Regiments don't practice it as much. The Cadians are pretty competent when it comes to tactics. The Armageddon Steel Legion focuses a lot on using a combination of heavy vehicles and artillery alongside infantry. The Catachan Jungle Fighters focus on guerilla warfare.

Did they change the lore on Farsight or something? I seem to remember a few editions ago they pretty much explained that prat of the reason the Ethereals started to dislike Farsight was his tactics against the Orks - he boxed them in and engaged in close quarters to slaughter them and also didn't give up ground as was the Tau way of battle. I think the Farsight Enclaves came about because Farsight believed the Etherals weren't supporting them enough and then they tried to remove him from command to which he refused and thus the Enclaves were independent. Again, this is all a few editions back in the Tau codex, I'd need to go find it and re-read. The Etherals also weren't so completely obviously evil in that codex. I'm guessing it's changed because I don't recall the Dawn Blade being a plot-point yet, I suppose because at that time in the timeline it was still normal for him not to have died of old age. The Dawn Blade was shocking because he was using a melee weapon, not because it kept him alive. I also do not at all recall the whole 'living as a hermit' thing.

Yes. In the new lore he always was doubtful of the ethereals, something that’s basically heresy for the tau, so they forced him to kill puretide, which pretty much fostered hatered . Also after witnessing daemons for the first time he realized the Ethereals completely fucked him over.

Yea he was living as a hermit but then the world he was on got attacked by Tyranids, so he threw on the battlesuit and reestablished his command. His goal during that engagement was to defend a group of scientist while they developed a neurotoxin that would destroy the Tyranid threat. The facility he was defending was overrun and only he and a scientist were able to escape the planet. However, looking back at the planet and the Tyranid fleet it soon became obvious that the neurotoxin was completed and the Tyranids along with their ships became consumed by it and destroyed. What ended up happening was that the scientists had completed the neurotoxin and injected themselves with it, ultimately allowing the Tyranids that overran their facility to consume them and spread the Neurotoxin. Through the sacrifice of the scientists the previously disillusioned Commander Farsight finally saw the true "Greater Good". He came back to lead the Farsight Enclaves and retook that planet, building new cities named after the scientist who gave their lives to obliterate the Tyranid threat and allow the world to remain a part of the Farsight Enclaves. With his heretical sword sapping life energy from the foes slated by it and prolonging his own life, Farsight has already been around for something like 300 years. Their isn't an imposter, Farsight is just a beast who actually engages in glorious melee combat in his Gundam. I'm sure as he continues using his Daemon-sword he'll continue being a huge part of the lore for the better part of a Millennium. Dude could be around for even longer than that as long as he keeps using that blade. Also he is potentially a latent psyker, which is extremely interesting, given that as far as I am concerned the Tau do not possess a presence in the warp. That would make Commander Farsight the greatest Tau ever and the most different. Melee and Psyker piloting a Gundam which kills foes with a Daemonblade, the dude is an absolute beast and mad lad. I am looking forward to more Farsight lore. I am glad his faction has split from the Ethereals and greater Tau empire, I might get into the tabletop simply because of his lore and being able to play a Gundam which uses melee. Awesome!

As much as I love that Farsight biography I still fell like I gotta apply some criticism towards the end of the video. Main part because the most recent part of his story, the whole Damocles storyline was let out despite being incredibly important when trying to understand his story. Also it drives the speculation about him being replaced by a successor to an end. It clearly states that Farsight himself is still alive (He's kept alive by his sword Dawnblade which transfers life energy from it's victims). Other part just to specify: Farsight himself is not and never was an enemy of the Tau Empire, in fact he still sees himself to be a part of it and fights along their members shoulder by shoulder. He merely is opposed to the Greater Good represented by the Ethereals, believing that the Tau as a civilisation have evolved to a point where the guidance of the Ethereals is no longer needed to keep them together. Otherwise great video, please keep it going

He is still alive because his weapon is the Chronoblade from Arthas Moloch that adds the lifespan of those he kills with it to his own. As for why he abandoned the Greater Good, it is because he supposedly learned the truth of the ethereal caste and their connection to the warp. This led him to rebel and claim independence from the Tau empire. You can find this out in the Tau codex, much more informative than the wiki lol

The Tau were my gateway drug into 40k. They had just been released when I first heard of the game and their aesthetics captivated my little weeb self, so I immediately started collecting them. After a few years of them gathering dust on the shelf I learned about the farsight enclaves and again fell in love, because my biggest issue was the lack of melee combat and the direction the lore was taking. Now I've fully embraced the enclaves and actually designed a cqc bodyguard unit for farsight and together with a friend I'm currently working on a rule set for viable melee units.

Nice, but you kinda danced around one of the most important parts! The Etherals have a form of control over the other casts of Tau that, so far, defies understanding. It was with the death of the Etherals that supported the Farsight expansion that Farsight himself realised that this control might not always be for the best. Farsight, disturbed by this revelation and now no longer trusting the Empire, isolated himself and is people as much as the Etherals did him.

Don't forget that they subjugate, and assimilate every sentient species they encounter through force. In fact, They even have eradicated a few species. I don't know much about the Jedi Order other than movies, but Tau are pretty much imperialists. Tau are far from being the good guys. Tau Empire is closer to Combine/Universal Union from Half-Life games than Jedi Order as a political entity

Great video, but it would be better with the greater context of the Tau Empire provided (maybe in a separate video): it's dual nature as an utopian society fighting for the Greater Good and as a dystopian, propaganda-driven oligarchy centered around mind control. I find the notion of a Tau civil war to be quite tantalizing - on one hand you have the empire itself, seemingly functional and idyllic, yet disturbingly "wrong" in the Ethereal's mind/psychic/chemical control of a brainwashed population; on the other a Farsight rebellion, filled with free-minded, truly individual and "real" Tau, yet simultaneously potentially poisoned by the various grim realities of the galaxy, including most dangerously by the darkness of the Chaos Gods. Who knows - maybe the Ethereal's domination of the Tau race is the real "greater good" in all of this; maybe a "lesser evil", if nothing else. Overall, it's great that the Tau (from a creative standpoint) have evolved from "goodie-two-shoes" aliens with Japanime aesthetics into a sci-fi race with actual nuance, depth and conflict.
