I've had a similar experience in customer service. I think once that happens you realise how difficult it is to communicate if the person you're talking to doesn't know BSL. Although we feel awful when thinking about it, at least we know the importance of learning BSL and preparing for next time :)

I started learning BSL around 3 weeks ago. I have learnt so much from your videos. I work in subway and occasionally get deaf people come into the store. It is hard to understand what they are asking for sometimes however with the help of your videos it’s becoming more clear and easy to work with them. I can see by their reaction they are appreciative when I have used BSL, and I always let them know I only know a small amount. Thanks so much for the help :)

I have autism and went to a school in 98/99 that used a lot of BSL. I learnt some whilst I was there but not used any when I was sent to a different school that was more for my level of learning, but watching this has made me realise how much I still remember, even though it's been 20 years!. Subbed as I have been wanting to learn again.

Your videos are great! I recently started a new job at a veterinary surgery and we have a couple of deaf clients who visit us. Although my BSL vocabulary is very limited, I managed to communicate with the lady who came in the other day, which I’m sure she appreciated as she has been a client here for years and no one seems to have made an effort to communicate with her till this point. I look forward to her coming in again and becoming more confident with sign language and conversing with her. Thanks for your videos Dan!

I served a deaf customer today and I managed fairly well despite my lack of BSL knowledge, I was able to infer a lot of her requests through context, and I was at least able to thank her and say goodbye at the end. She used the notes app on her phone when she needed to so she was able to get what she needed. That was yesterday. I'm so glad this video exists so I can make the same transaction easier for other deaf customers I might meet some day. I hope I see her again, she was really nice :)

These videos are very cool. I recently started working with a deaf gent and most find it difficult to communicate with him and don't even bother. Only a few of us try to include him by learning to communicate. I've found sign language very interesting as I find a lot of it very literal by design and it fascinates me. My friend teaches me what he can but these videos are endlessly helpful in taking the weight off of him having to try and explain everything to me. Wonderful job Dan.

Hello Dan - I learnt to finger spell 60 years ago. In those days the letter W was inverted, and Z was similar to the sign for BISCUIT, unless I had a bad teacher. My question is about C and D. I am right-handed and have always made the C shape with my left hand and added my right index finger to make D, but it seems that I should be using my right hand for C and adding my left index finger for D. Does it matter? BTW - keep up the good work; love your tutorials especially the tempo and varying views.

Is it the lip pattern that tells them apart? Or am I wrong? Sorry I don't mean to cause any offence. Just want to make sure I am signing correctly. Thank you :)

I had a question about this. I know a lot of deaf people also read lips and so people mouth the words they're signing too. Would it be better to mouth the translation or the literal BSL word order? For example "What are you looking for?" or "Looking what?" Hope that makes sense and tysm for such a helpful video!

Hi, I’m learning BSL and I’d love to know how to create a negative sentence e.g I didn’t go to the park, I do not have brown hair, it isn’t Thursday etc Great video!

You can try signing for example 'go to the park', and show the negative in your face, like frowning and shaking your head. you can sign things the same, and show the did / didn't in your facial expressions :)

Hi, I’m starting to learn BSL and I was just wondering, when you sign and either speak or mouth along, do you say the BSL word order? Or the word order in English? Thank you for the videos they’re really helpful :)

You can either use the English word order with BSL signs. People will understand that, it is Sign Supported English. Or you can use the BSL word order, which is how this gentleman is signing.
