In this video, we test some of the most commonly available commercial loads for the 7.62x54r. The round itself has made tremendous leaps in popularity, mainly due to the fact that the M91/30 is such a cheap and available rifle in surplus form. One reason the round has taken off well too is that it is still in service in the Military so surplus stores are continuing to replenish. It has the distinction of being the long serving military cartridge in the world, being in service since 1891.
We will shoot another test in a future video showcasing some of the most common military surplus ammunition. We thought that a test of commercial ammo would be a prudent thing given that most of it sells for a considerable premium over most surplus offerings. On the plus side, much of the brass cased commercial ammo is boxer primed and reloadable.
Even despite the seemingly cheap cost of surplus ammo, some of us still like to experiment with handloads in the Mosin. I am one of those people and will share some of my pet loads in a future video.

Great vid Eric. Thanks for taking the time. I've been getting tired of having to clean my Mosin within an hour of shooting surplus ammo. This really helps me narrow the field of non-corrosive ammo to look for. I've got a couple boxes of 180 grain Winchester white box 7.62x54R soft points that I haven't fired yet. I think I'll try upload a grouping session with them when I get the chance.

Awesome build, bought 91/30 for wife but she only wanted LimbSaver recoil reducer and BrassStacker rail for scout scope. She likes older look of this hex receiver type Mosin built in '33 at Tula as it is save foe the scope. We usually like 5 round groups to truly ring out accuracy potential of any rifle/ammo combo. Your videos are well made and to the point with info people that like guns are looking for. Good job.

Fully disassembling the bolt revealed that mine had some extra cosmoline packed away in between the parts of the bolt. Once I cleaned that out, scrubbed, and oiled everything again, my action got a lot smoother. Still, nothing as smooth as that beast.

If you have to beat the bolt, the receiver probably needs to be shimmed. Sometimes the magazine is recessed to high into the stock. The top of the magazine is impacting the bottom of the bolt causing interference. Loosen the screws half a turn and then cycle the bolt, see if it loosens up a bit. If not try a full turn on the screws.

I have noticed a few comments on people writhing their addiction was that smooth. On my 43 Tula I have a very smooth bolt. I took it completely apart to clean it when I got it. Every time I clean the rifle, I spray the whole bolt down with balistol. Then I let it sit and wipe it down as thoroughly as I can with a cloth. My bolt is super smooth and the only sticking I get is if the receiver gets really hot and the casings stick a bit.

I have a 90% "as received" (I Refinished the stock and slightly reduced the diameter of the stock where you grip it behind trigger) I do not know much about it, But it is a Hex 1914 marked receiver Mosin-Nagant the long barrel, M91 model, My sights are marked Arshins on one side and Meters on the other...My handloads which are Sierra 180 Grain Prohunter (Which are .311 for .303 loaded with Accurate 2700) will smack the 440 gong at 440, 19 out of 20 shots and I am shooting with open sights, at a red painted gong! (as for the off the shelf S&B loads, my first impression reaction would be YES, that is what I used to buy, and now reloading those cases)

It is a tuner, you can tune by sliding it up and down the barrel, imagine strumming a guitar and sliding your finger up the neck of the guitar. You will change the harmonics.
@ianjacques3226
@ianjacques3226 6 жыл бұрын
Philip Alpers Trent Wilson hustler0118 isaac Alan Hodgkinson it has a few possible/probable independent/correlated effects: Damping harmonics, tuning harmonic resonance to a different shape or speed of successive waves, tricking the barrel into thinking it is either more rigid or more compliant at a certain point, muffling the secondary shockwave that returns back to the receiver after the supersonic first wave exits, cushioning the rattle associated with the blast from the muzzle and a host of other dynamic and sound/shock effects. This product is similar to a muffler as well as bushings, shocks and the harmonic balancer on most every vehicle. I understand the theories due to studying vehicle dynamics and component force/energy transfer relations.

Is this on a mosin? If so you make that gun with it stock trigger group have a hair trigger with adjusting the nut the by the trigger. I know because I've done two of them. Just don't loosen the too far out. Only draw back is your bolt will fall out with out pressing on the trigger.

That looks like a really smooth action on your Mosin, not like the surplus versions that require a little muscle.

Eric, THANKS. Great review. I wish you you would have thrown in a little surplus though. Would have been interesting. Love the custom job on the rifle. I'm a Mosin guy too, and appreciate what can be done with this solid platform.

I just shot my shortened mosin with the Winchester white box 180 gr soft point and was getting 1 1/4 groups all day with it. I cant wait to try this S&B Match load!

Great video. Just wondering, Eric did you let the barrel cool down between strings? A hot barrel shoots different than a cooler one. Your videos are the best.

I just started using the Silver Bear 203 gr. So far I've found it cycles a little easier than the PPU and it's not very expensive. I bought them for hunting but still experimenting with groups.

Eric, good video. Have you experienced accuracy issues with any Mosins after continuous fire? I've had a couple of experiences where heating up the barrel starts to lead to some really funky shots.

Great video! I just finished my mosin project and just got back from shooting it for the first time. I was shooting the Winchester white box 180 gr soft point and got 1 1/4 inch or better groups. Im very happy. oh by the way when we going to see some muzzle breaks on your myosin's??? I cut jus shy of 6in off my barrel and put on a precision armament m-11 brake on it and it looks and shoots fantastic! keep up the good work I love my mosin and love seeing all yours!

Hey Eric, EXCELLENT video! My mom bought me a mosin for my birthday from you a couple years ago. I. just love these guns. Thats a real sweet one you got there. I dig the parkerized,down turned bolt. Did you notice any variation in accuracy with the rubber barrel thing taken off?

it refers to the length of the bullet itself. "7.62" is the diameter of the bullet "x54R" means that it is 7.62millimeters in diameter by 54millimeters long, and it is a "Rimmed" cartridge. same applies for: 7.62x39mm (AK and SKS) 7.62x51mm (7.62NATO also known as .308Win) (AR10, M240B, etc) 7.62x54R (Mosin Nagant, Dragunov SVD, FPK Dragunov/PSL-54, PKM) 7.62x63mm (more commonly known as .30-06) (M1 Garand, 1903 Springfield, etc)

he actually just did a video on that, look at his recent videos. it has to do with the bolt face if i remember correctly. one thing you can do on top of what he put in that video is put some rubbing compound on a rag and attach it to a drill and really clean out the receiver super well.

Not sure of the exact term, but a barrel harmonic damper. It's supposed to change the harmonics of the barrel whip, resulting in different sized shot groups, depending on how heavy it is and where it's placed on the barrel.

Personally, I am against changing a surplus firearm drastically, but I think the current set up of that mosin is actually quite neat. Though the paint can be done without. Loving how smooth that bolt action is.

It would be interesting to know what, if any, upgrades were done to the trigger, barrel, action, etc. Also whether or not the barrel had a chance to cool down between groups, or it was all run hot. Still, good info, thanks. Still a bit confused about the rate of twist vs. bullet length and weight. Seems a longer bullet would be heavier, and this be able to take advantage of the higher twist rate. But here, 170-180 grain out-performs 203 grain. What am I not getting?
@Cragified
@Cragified 11 жыл бұрын
Eric, why did Mosin make the barrels so long back then do you think when these always perform so well when cut down? Even at 400 meters it's hitting great and even back then I doubt many wartime shots were done that far. Were they just going for maximum muzzle velocity from the charge?

I tried a box of the Hornady 150 gr sst in my 91/30 with nothing done to it and they absolutely sucked. watching this has showed me " it's not what it says it will do, it's what it does". so I bought the largest selection I could find and tried everything thanks man. mines shooting best with the ppu 182 and s&b 180. after that surplus yugo seems pretty good.
