And you can find mackerel in every friggen grocery store in the USA too. Its great because its the cheapest fish protein. If you dont like the fishy flavor buy the smoked or smother it in hot sauce . As an American this channel is the 1st time ive heard of this 'trash fish' phenomena. I think these guys are unique because theyre fisherman they have the option to be picky.

Hello, grilled mackerel enjoyer from Korea here. The fish will taste good no matter how it looks like, but maybe I can share some tips from my side of the world about grilling mackerels. Grilled mackerels on 11:56 look like that because mackerels have thin and weak skins. It will crumble easily when you move the fish on a grill or a pan. One way to cook both sides evenly without flipping it is to butterfly the fish before you grill it. You can then spread the butterflied mackerel it on the grill skin side down, and cover it with a lid. Because it is butterflied, the whole flesh is now half as thick, so the top part can be cooked only with the ambient heat between the lid and the grill. Meanwhile the skin will become harder and crispier because it can be grilled for a longer time without being disturbed. I know this very well because my frying pan looked just like your grill when I cooked mackerels by myself for the first time. It had skin and flesh sticking all over the pan's surface, and my mackerel wasn't as pretty as what I expected. That was when my mom gave me an advice to stop my mackerels from sticking to my pan and making a mess: don't flip the fish. No wonder she grills her fish with double-sided frying pans.

Mackarel is also really popular in American prison! Since it's cheap, canned or boxed mackarel tends to be available in the commissary. Protein is pretty hard to acquire on a prison diet, so mackarel ("macks" as they're known in prison) are *extremely* valuable. Macks are practically their own currency in the US penal system.

@@Steve-em4tb ALOT of people from here would get rather upset and disagree with you., They are slowly disappearing here just like the cod, stripped bass. (Striped bass probably a part of the decline as they are starting to repopulate the waters around NS), there are a lot of online arguments about them impacting the lobster fishery as well I can only say I've caught two bass with bellys of baby lobsters if that's common idk. Personally I see plenty of mackerel everywhere I'm fishing for them and disagree with the standing recreational rules of 20 fish over 10.5 as letting 50 go that are hooked fu(ked from getting jigged but are an inch too small have a bad chance of recovery. Maybe have it the first 20 you catch? Idk.. The people who write our laws sit in an office lol.

Fishing in portugal produces lots of different fish, but mackerel or Sarda as we call them, is everywhere, from canned as you said, be it in olive oil, in tomato paste, etc, to grilled on the cools just as we do with sardines. It's quite abundant and i always keep a couple of fillets on my freezer, try them grilled with lime juice and soy sauce, it's amazing. For a lot of people in portugal it's a fish that symbolizes the summer, when most people are grilling fish on the coals, pairing it with a fresh tomato, onion and cucumber salad. Thanks for the video, hopefully more people will learn to appreciate this fish.

Mackerel... yum. Just between the pectoral fins you have the liver. Just above and forward is the heart. Keep those two when cleaning. There are so many preperation methods I've started writing a book. One of my favorites is fillet, separate the high and low loins. Each fish makes 4 finger fillets. Save the belly flap meat for bait. Double bread the fillets with a spicey mix and fry into delicious fish sticks. Eat with fat french fries and your favorite sauce, beer or soda. Hearts and livers go with breakfast. Mix them into scrambled eggs or sauté them and spread on crispy toast. Taste like eating a clean fish market.

Cape Cod was fished out of cod long ago. For years, the fishery in the Provincetown fleet was built on mackerel. The Portugues fishermen - actually Azorean - netted mackerel from vast schools. They said you could walk across the mackerel, they were so densely packed. Most all of their catch was shipped to southern Europe, where it was a staple. This was true right into the mid-20th century.

I agree if your protein is fresh you require less seasonings or long marinades

We eat mackerel cakes (like crab cakes) in Tennessee, at least we use to. I don’t know if the younger generation does. I love them.

I think a lot of the hate for mackerel comes from eating it while it's not fresh, mackerel has a a very short window of when you can eat it. If you get it from the fish mongers, it's probably been kept on ice for a few days - the fish taste gets stronger and the meat becomes less firm. I always eat it the same day I catch it - a squeeze of lemon and some salt - and I usually eat it either with couscous or pasta and pesto.

Lots of people here in south Florida consider mackerel trash, but lots think that it’s delicious if smoked and are fine with it for that.

You don't need any special rig to catch mackerel, my mum and grandpa used a line and hooks with silver paper from a bar of chocolate. They caught so many that they got a reduction in their B&B holiday charge as the landlady had what they could not eat.
