its a speedbooster adapter, it has a lens in it. Now you're going to say - WTF on a lens, well, some vendor speedbooster put a purple/blue-ish tinge on a photograph because they use cheap glass. Yes, there are different glass - good glass cost more.

the speed booster also reduce the multiplier - so a 50mm instead become 80mm, a speedbooster reduce that to 52 or 53mm read the spec - speedbooster often is 0.8x

The firmware of the Commlite adapter can be updated. Commlite has software for both Mac and PC. The adapter has to be attached to the camera and the camera has to be connected to a computer. The camera sees the adapter as a lens and the software tricks the camera in order to update the adapter. I don't know if that is safe for the camera. Commlite supports officially less lenses than metabones. Both are great for electronic aperture control and manual focusing. Metabones is faster with autofocus but for ordinary photography Commlite is adequately fast. Metabones version IV still costs 400$ Commlite can be found at 50$. The difference is huge.

CRUZROY Helicopters I have the Comlite adapter. It has slow autofocus. If you can wait sometimes two to three seconds for autofocus comlite is good. I shoot mostly landscape photos or architectural photos. So fast autofocus isn't an issue for me. With daylight the autofocus is faster and with small than f/4 aperture the autofocus speed is good too. The comlite struggles with low light and big aperture. I don't have the metabones but I have the Sigma which costs around 150-200€. The Sigma MC-11 is fine with Sigma EF Mount lenses but can be used with Canon lenses too. It is better than Comlite.

What did you want to know. Except for the Speedbooster, the two adapters are just that - adapters. They are simple a tube and have no actual optical performance. He did show how much difference there was between the autofocus functions of the two adapters and that's probably as much as you need to know. Everything else comes down to the compatibility of your lens/camera combination. So if it's sharpness tests you're looking for, this isn't the place.

It sounds like a promo for Metabones. People are trying to save money and you quickly seemed to brush off the comparison and got into up-selling to the even more expensive Metabones. Dave Dugdale did the same comparison and concluded the opposite just a couple months before you made this video. If you watch that one you will see actual meaningful comparisons instead of just opinion.
@photorectoby

I have shot with both and while I own the Sigma MC-11 and still use it today, the Metabones has greater compatibility with a greater amount of lenses. That's not an opinion - that's based on my testing for the 18 months before I made this video.

I own the gh4 and a7s, and i own the metabones XL speedbooster already (and metabones for a7s) but i want to make my canon 70-200 2.8 IS II USM lens LONGER. So would i be better off buying a Canon 1.4X teleconverter? OR a normal ef-m43 Metabones smart adapter??? Obviously if i buy the TC i can have longer lens on both cameras, but my GH4 gets used more than A7s anyway... so maybe the M43 smart adaptor is the go. Thoughts?

I will never replace my super small and light Canon SL1 Camera with unlimited buffer for JPEG photos with the fastest autofocus for photos and video . Fast enough for bird photography with my Canon 400mm lens. Even i got fast autofocus with Tamron 1.4 and 2x teleconverters attached to the camera. Yes I got 560mm and 800mm fast autofocus for photos and 1120mm autofocus for video. With the 1.6 cropping factor on the sensor i got 1792mm autofocus for video. You can buy the camera for $350-$400. And the camera work really well from 100-800 ISO. And Hey nobody shoot professional photos more than ISO 200 even with the best cameras in the world keep in mind. If you got extra money to spend buy whenever you wont that’s your money. The camera was not important factor when we talk about the best photos ever.

Toby are you going to also test fotodiox and viltrox Canon EF to Sony FE adapters? My Metabones IV T is going back to the store because it has problems with connecting to my A7R2 and I have read several reviews from others with same issues. Sounds like people have to try 2 or 3 samples of Metabones to get a good one. Commlite - I had zero problems with connections. Problem with Commlite: 50 1.2L and 85 1.2L Af is a no go on Commlite, and go on Metabones. But the bottom line are you going to test other bargain prices adapters like Fotodiox and viltrox? I've heard great things about fotodiox for example

+Dmitry Brodsky Wow - exact opposite of my experience. The Viltrox I used briefly in Iceland and was not impressed - it worked well with canon 70-200 f/4 but other lenses had issues and build quality did not impress - but it was cheap. I will see if I can get a Fotodiox in here soon.

@MrPhilbautista
@MrPhilbautista 7 жыл бұрын
Nope. The whole purpose of a speedbooster is to allow you to use D/SLR lenses with a camera with a smaller sensor and negate the crop factor. I also thought of the same thing before but with EF lenses to EF mounts. Doesn't work that way. You need to work from a bigger lens mount to a smaller sensor. The reason it works with the Sony full frame sensors is that when shooting in 4k, the image crops into Super35, which is pretty much an APS-C size image. If you tried that trick with stills, the body would recognize the lens as a crop lens and would either have nasty vignetting or have a good image but cut out about a third or half the resolution.

@MrPhilbautista
@MrPhilbautista 7 жыл бұрын
Yes. I have cheap smart adapters and manual focus works perfectly fine on all my lenses. I have Canon EF and EF-S mount lenses as well lenses from Tokina, Tamron and Sigma. AF sucks but manual focus works fine. Not all lenses have full time manual focus so you may have to switch the lens from AF to MF before you can focus manually. I don't use dumb adapters with AF lenses because I can't control the aperture with dumb adapters so I can't comment on those, but I have had no issues with the smart adapters I have.

I am sorry, IMHO Metabones Adapter are massively overpriced. It is a piece of metal (there are no high quality lenses in it) with some electronic components and a pinch of reverse engineering - they do not use any unusual expensive materials like titan, magnesium either. For $400 I would at least expect an adapter, which works perfectly with any lens. I do not mind to pay a higher price for quality, but not for a "piece of metal" - remember what lenses you can buy for $400!

Question, though its rare, I've seen one guy post all over commlite reviews (has to be the same guy cause its always the same description and camera body) that it fried his lens chip. Can anyone testify their experience with commlite service in reaction to problems? Also, a guy did a video showing that his sigma lens broke after using the metabones IV. And metabones only reimbursed him for the adapter which I would find appalling and outrageous if their product did that to my gear. I'd be demanding pay for paying for a premium "quality built adapter." Now if there was a reason why metabones did this (for example: more to the story) I would understand. Is there anyone who has suggestions, other than using native lense (Which I don't want to do)? I would buy the commlite, but though people rave about commilte adapters, the company is china based (I believe) and has no facebook account.

I have a Viltrox f/booster, which is sort of like the metabones speedbooster. AF sucks but otherwise works fine. I've had it for over a year now (maybe 2?) and haven't encountered any issues but I don't abuse my gear so, there's that. I don't go attaching a Bigma and holding it by the body but have not had any problems with smaller lenses like the 24-105/4 IS or 70-200/4 (non-IS). Common sense should tell you which lenses you should be supporting full time. As far as performance goes, since there is an additional optic, expect sharpness to suffer a bit. I haven't tried the Metabones version so I don't know how their optics affects IQ. I think these sell for under $150.

+Andrea Di Pasquale With the speedbooster you can get the cropping factor down to APS-C sensor size, there are the .71 and .64 variants of the speedbooster which will give you a (2*.71) 1.42, (2*.64) 1.28 for stills and 1080p, or (2.3*.71) 1.63 and (2.3*.62) 1.43 crop factors in 4k. I'd get .64 if you want to record in 4k a lot but otherwise I'd get the .71 because with the .64 you'll get vignetting on non-full-frame lens when taking stills or non-4k video.

PhotoRec Toby Not that easy for me, living in Brazil. 75 dollars, right now, as bad as our economy is doing, is pretty much 280 reais (min. wage is 820), so I can't take that risk. Well, anyway, I won't need one now, so let's see how future editions do! Thank you, Toby. You always answer me and I appreciate that very much. Keep up the excellent work.

+Mister R I have Commlite to be mount in my A6000. I never tried other adaptor, but I use to use it with my EF40mm pancake, EF50mm 1.8ii and it usually takes forever to get focus in AF mode. However if you use it in MF with the peaking feature of A6000 which I really like (Why Canon doesn't have peaking or zebra functions?), then Commlite works good, giving you metering info to the camera. Is a quite like being in old-school photography doing the picture by hand. I think is fun anyway. When I need fast autofocusing I just use the lenses in the native Canon body. Regards

tengomalasuerte Cool, but I need AF 70% of the time, so only having MF is a no go for me. Thanks!

+Matthew White Go read up on the metabones, yes it actually increases the light transmission (t stop).
@sonvfave
@sonvfave 8 жыл бұрын
its semantics I realize now... its how the available light that enters and passes through is manipulated... Light is not added... What was said is that it increases light etc.. not good physics What is happening is a better use of the light ie more efficient, thus allowing for lower f stop experience, its all in the wording... sorry for being an Adem Henry here.. looks like a very cool item .. just a little pricy! more than the cost of my a6000! wowo

Matthew White, it increases light hitting the sensor - it's not semantics

Hey Toby are there any m4/3 adapters for fe or e mount lens?

+myrk98466 M4/3 is smaller than FE and even APS-C so it doesn't make sense to go that way.

+PhotoRec Toby I mean an adapter for the olympus em5ii so I can use fe or e mount lens. Not a m4/3 adapter for the sony camera.

+myrk98466 Oops - Yes that makes much more sense. The answer though is no, not that I know of. Not enough E or FE lenses on the market for this to be viable. Sorry!

I would not consider the Commilite or any cheap adapter. I have tried two with my MTF BMPCC and none of them were supported but listed on the lenses compatibility.

Well since all I have seen or heard about both of these adapters is that they suck....I'll save all that money and continue to manually focus my adapted lenses, which is no problem for me because I originally learned to take photos like that anyway.

Canon has fantastic lenses - many photographers and videographers already own - adapters make it possible to continue to use even if it isn't the best setup.
