This is such a great video to help troubleshoot and figure out why a photo isn't working. Just starting the landscape masterclass and have learnt a lot already. Looking forward to learning more.

Once again a phenomenal and informative video. Your self-deprecating assessment of your earlier photos makes it easier for me to laugh at my own mistakes. Mire than any other landscape photography KZbinr, you make me want to grab my camera and go outside shooting, even if only in my own neighborhood, to try out the new ideas I have learned. I have visited your website to view your images, and have lost track of how many times I’ve said “WOW!” Highest compliments to your art and your content.

Well done, as we all have these issues and it’s hard to criticize our work because the retro eye sometimes overwhelms. This is the maturation with understanding process that would be wise for all to watch. I’m going to watch it again.

Awesome tips William. Thanks for sharing. Off to photograph the west coast for the next 5 days so will definitely keep these in mind. Especially the one about putting the subject too close to the edge. I've always been too worried about putting the subject closer to the centre due to all the composition things you read, but seeing how you do it in your photos while maintaining the rule of thirds, leading lines or another composition technique helps me a lot.

Thanks a lot Shaun and all the best on the coast. Seems like a decent weather window out there the next few days :)

Thanks for this! You are not only a talented photographer and artist, you are a very gifted and generous teacher. This video is brilliant. One thing I’d love to hear you talk more about is your file management on the computer. I viewed one of your tutorials where you explained a bit of it (the “marinade” folder, folders by subject) but I’d love to know more! For example, what you do with the images from a shoot that maybe weren’t worth processing in the end, didn’t work out, etc. Do you trash things? And if so, what are the criteria for chucking them in the bin? Memory storage is pretty cheap, but if not managed well, the files get overwhelming fast.
@WilliamPatinoPhotography2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Yolanda. I delete files in camera, so when I’m home I’m only transferring and saving a collection of raws that are worthwhile. Still, I might have a large amount that will never be touched just the one file from the particular shoot however I don’t bother deleting the others, it’s too time consuming. I manually create folders by year, month and then location then simply drag and drop the raws into the corresponding folder. Once an image has been edited, it sits in a draft (marinade) folder and then eventually those either end up in a portfolio folder or may be deleted if I decide I don’t want to share them. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the tips. It gives the rest of us hope given how much you've improved! One thing with some of your videos though, the audio volume seems to vary within the video so you might want to try and keep an eye on that. (Or maybe give us a video in a few years time showing common mistakes to avoid :) )

What metering mode do you use when taking photos at sunrise and sunset?
@WilliamPatinoPhotography3 жыл бұрын
I only reference the histogram, as it's more accurate than any metering mode. Thanks :)

New to the channel but I've been aware of you for a while now. Your Facebook advertising is paying off. Try to resist driving too much traffic from social media directly to videos. It can confuse the hell out of the algorithm and can stunt your organic growth on the platform. Here, have a like, that will help the algorithm :). Love your work and thank you for being honest about your past images. I feel my photography is somewhere in the middle between the examples you have here and your really awesome recent work. I do not have the issues you seemed to have with HDR. Generally, it does a decent job but you're 100% right that it can be abused to make some absolutely senseless photos. Still a powerful tool though and in general bracketing can help in those high dynamic range instances as you might prefer the -1 or +1 exposures over the 0. I have some feedback on the video: The audio level is all over the place. I think your recorder is automatically level adjusting. In between takes, it boosts the gain and when you go to talk it blasts out at us and then suddenly it adjusts it down. My recommendation would be to find a level that works and stop it from adjusting. The lighting is great, no shocker that you nailed that one ;). The composition of the video is ok, going wider might draw in too much of the room, which you may not have set up for shooting but I might recommend that route if you're going to shoot more talking head stuff. Any tighter though and it will feel like you're part of the background due to compression. Just like your photography, you are in the midground so just need a good background :D. Keep up the great work, these are opinions only so take it as you may and I am no expert myself, just another traveller on the road. I hope to see more videos from you, as I love photo video journal content.
