This is exactly the kind of video I needed to see. Question for a future video how much of jiu jitsu is learned through the mind and how much is learned through the body? How does that process occur in your experiences? Do you find that process is streamlined as you get more experience?

Okay, although you are right, there is a place to start, and as you said, the beginner needs to understand first how to protect himself, and gradually open up to the attacks. At least that is what I think.

Hey Chewy thanks for this! I have a question as a white belt: I keep getting my back taken at the gym. I do a decent job at escaping/transitioning in and out of most basic positions, but I keep getting caught in someone’s back mount. You have a few videos on how to escape the rear naked choke, but what would you advice on avoiding/escaping back mount? Thanks, you’re the best!
@BJJTK4 жыл бұрын
Are they taking the back from full mount, side control, or are they arm dragging you into that position?
@jacobday38264 жыл бұрын
I'm going to approach the most common back take because your question is a little broad. In guard you can't over commit to a single side. For example, last night I had a white belt try to Americana me in my full guard, I just popped around to his back. Most commonly people say to place one hand on each side, you can also base off of your shoulder (onto their hip, almost as if you're in a downward dog position), or wrap your opponent's legs with their gi or belt.

TK Studio Mostly side control, or when we start from the knees I have a bad habit of turtling up when my gas tank is running low.

Jacob Day thanks for the reply, I left it vague hoping to get a variety of answers since I haven’t pinpointed exactly what positions I’m in before they take my back. I’ll keep your answer in mind for tonight’s roll!
@ryang99734 жыл бұрын
@@thegentlemandrummer8753 this is the same thing that used to happen to me. Work on keeping your limbs in really tight leaving to gaps and chin tucked from turtle (there's videos on it) and don't stay in turtle for more than a few seconds as there is really no offensive options. Most subonly guys would agree it's better to have someone on you side control than turtle due to the defensive options.

I go to a non profit BJJ gym in a small town and I pay $10 per class or a 10 pack for $80. No idea if that's cheap or not 🤣

I pay 120 a month but that includes access to mma and boxing classes as well. Seems like a decent deal to me.

I’m at a MMA gym that does Jui Jitsu and other martial arts separately and it’s £78 for unlimited access. Only gone to MMA gyms before and that’s average, don’t know if specifically jui jitsu gyms cost more or less though.

Hey Chewy, I'm a white belt that struggles with rolls against big guys. I'm an average sized woman but I struggle locking in some of the standard guards (even full guard) because I run out of leg and can't even lock my ankles XD. There are often no other students of a similar size to practice with. Do you have any suggestions for alterations? Thanks and I love the videos! :D

Hey Chewy. Question, if you train at a Gym where you have multiple coaches how do you move up in belt rank? I understand some promote you with attendance, but if it's based on skill and what you've learned, how do they know you're ready to move up from white to blue and so on? Thanks in advance.

Am I the only one who never had this 'survival' mentality? I've always had an opportunistic approach where I just roll at a moderate-to-high intensity and keep trying something regardless of what position I'm in. This made me pretty spazzy at first but as I learned stuff I ended up with 'go-to' techniques for most positions because I was always actively trying to do something. I think this also helped with my guard retention and recovery as well.
