One of the best tutorials out there for sculpting. Thank you so much for the effort and for such detailed explanation. Used to do sculpting in high school yet there are many things I've never heard about. Its in fact hard to describe how useful this is BIG THANK YOU!!!!

Thanks for the video, the nose and mouth strategy to sculpt are the kind of concepts that is not obvilously to discover by yourself and not a lot of people have the mentality to teach like you do, so thanks for sharing

Mr. Ryan, because of you I did something that in the past I believe that is impossible. This method is fantastic. Thank you for everything. There are so many YT videos out there about sculpting but no one is good in explaining as you do. God bless you and your family. Greetings from Serbia.

I used to think that I was "comfortable sculpting" using the defaults Clay buildup and other brushes until I discovered your BallStylus, such a difference! and I realized the importance of using the correct tools to achieving specific results instead of using workarrounds. Thank you very much for all the resources you share and of course the great and unvaluable free knowledge of anatomy, you are a master!

Man... I thought I had at least some understanding of how to sculpt a face. This video made me realize I have no idea what I'm doing! Looking at the potato I created while trying to follow this tutorial did not feel great. I know I can trace my errors back to not getting the previous steps right though, so I guess that's something! I found myself feeling stressed through the whole process, and I think it's because my mind got hung up on sculpting the form in as few strokes as possible. I won't be discouraged and I won't stress as much next time I watch this. I will pause and rewind and make sure to focus more on understanding the process and less on trying to follow along.

The nostril part is explained like this. 2D Symbols ( brain ) vs actual form ( reality). The major planes of the nose were respected by only subtracting from it and not involving additive symbols. This is the same in painting with values or drawing. Were the Major planes have to be respected and not include symbols.

This is the one! I spent a lot of time learning facial anatomy, and while it's good, there're still parts that confusing, or I can see it, but can't make it. This stream help me with lots of those issues. I spent 4 days learning this stream, slowly, patiently, rewatch to the point I almost remember everything Ryan said, and I improved ALOT! Not as good as he does, but much better than my previous self

Your analogies in the begining were very inspiring. Your eye method was helpful to me. I feel like the eye and mouth have certain similarities , as if dome of the mouth was the eye itself.

thanks for this amazing archievement i learn the pro method by sculpting but never try to sculpt like a real sculptor, that's very helpfull (number of moves and save time + passion). I had a real face in these 2 methods but your method is really nice for found the good proportion quickly...

I have other exercises, not number of movements. Number of movements are a good challenge to what a person wants to achieve and is good advice what you said "go to the goal". But for my personal research and way of working I start sculpting the head by the Loomis method in the order of studying the geometry of the skull / head and the silhouette. The process is fun, not so reaching the end goal, but making a fun educational trip. I take the time to build the shapes without me rushing. But for I have invented another challenge for myself - do not use Ctrl+Z button so much. In other words, I'm trying to do the same thing as working with physical clay with there is no undo button. Also, I force myself in the order to discipline something like what you said - right on target - but maybe not as little as it hits you - 16. But something like 1. Be disciplined and think about every move you make. 2. You do not waste energy in meaningless blows. Block the main forms firmly and move on to the next level without the right to go back any further. Once the main forms are blocked and I have moved on to the secondary forms, I avoid going back to step 1 - the base. But anyway - good video and good advice. It is good to share thoughts and experiences.

Hey, I forgot to answer your question about what I learned from your lesson - i can't define the number, maybe immodestly 4.5 - 5, but i'm not sure but these days I'm thinking about how much it helped me, just stuck in my head these steps, especially the construction of the forehead. Just the forehead. It is imprinted in my memories. It is always before my eyes these days. And then the numbering of each of the objects in the order of their construction - nose, mouth, eyes. And definitely helped me make clear the strategy of building the nose structure, eyes and mouth. Because I've been there before, yes, but there was more struggle. Unwanted struggle. So very useful. Definitely something I will test as an upcoming practice.

One challenge I've been trying to sort out is taking a scan of someone with closed eyes not having reference of them open and sculpting them open. There's not a lot of info out there on it you have to find old life casting books to try figure out a system.

I'd like to add my two cents and mention a mistake I've recently been discovered I've been making all the time: Jumping to the features before completely laying down the shape of the face. While I still got some nice cute faces that way, I kept ending up with the mouth area too far forward in what I like to call "chimp-face syndrome."
