“Squid” has been around 45+ years! I raced motocross in the late 70’s early 80’s and we used it often. Not necessarily to down newbies because as you said, we’ve all been there. Don't feel bad - I've been riding since the early 80's and I am your age. I never hear of of most of these like Squid or tank slapper. I hears Death Wobble and Low Side for laying the bike down, those were common. The rest, not so much. Still, it's good to keep up with modern terms. I like to use them around my kids to annoy the shit out of them.

I've typically seen "Squid" as referring to an inexperienced overconfident sportbike rider who wears a full-face helmet but no other gear. While I've seen several supposed origins of the term and backronyms, the best description was that the lanky no-gear body and limbs below a big bulky helmet sort of resembles a squid.

To everyone that's interested, please let me explain the physics behind a tank slapper. With out going to deep into unreadable words most often it happens after the front wheel got lifted off the ground by a clutch-up or hard acceleration. If the wheel lifts off the ground and lands at an angle the bike will correct the direction the front tire is facing automatically due to gyroscopic forces. After that 2 things can happen: 1: The tire jerks forward and stays in a normal position. 2: The gyroscopic forces are to strong and due to inertial force the tire violently jerks to the opposite side. This causes a chain reaction in which the front tire will jerk from side to side. In this situation the best thing to do is to let it do it's thing, as yammie said in the video. But it's harder than you think because in such a moment you panic and you don't want it to happen. If you want to take anything off of this comment with you is that any force you apply to a tank slapper will make it worse, so just don't intervene with it.

When I first started riding a KZ1000 Police, I had a moto cop buddy tell me, Hey put a KZ900 cam into it, but you will need a steering damper. This was due to some kind of harmonic vibration that would cause the police bikes to have the "tank slapper". (I never bothered with the mods, hella fun bikes though)
@Chevsilverado
@Chevsilverado Жыл бұрын
Poorly tuned or worn out suspension can also make it much worse. A well tuned bike should virtually never randomly have a tank slapped unless you’re doing serious speeds and hitting bumps and stuff, like some videos show. So, those videos of people who have crazy tank slappers at 60mph usually all have mushy poorly tuned suspension on their bikes, like a clapped out cruiser or something. Either way, yeah don’t fight it and it’ll fix itself. Many times when going really fast or hitting a bump wrong you’ll get a very slight vibration and if you fight that then it’ll turn into a tank slapper, so a relaxed grip all the time will stop them from happening in the first place.

My dad have tried a tank slapper 2 times before. He stayed on the bike both times and he say there is mainly 2 ways to stop it from happening. One is to get low and speed up, the other is to get high and slow down. Tank slappers are from your bike getting a specific frequency that makes the bike wobble it varies from bike to bike.

Also the thing you call chicken strips (the unused area on the outer edge of a tire) doesn't have a name so much in Australia but we do refer to is as a measure of how aggressive a person rides. "Wow, are those your track tires? They're worn right to the edge bro!" is how its mentioned around here.

An old term lost in the early 80's. "Vetterized" as in I Vetterized my Bike. It consisted of spending big bucks for a Craig Vetter Windjammer Fairing and bracket to mount it to the bikes frame. If you had money to burn you bought the optional lowers, matching bags, and trunk too. If you had a Honda GL1000 you simply "had" to Vetterize your Goldwing. None of the GL1000's came with that Vetter stuff and were sold "naked". Very few passed up the option of having their bike "Vetterized" before taking delivery from their Honda Dealer.

Apparently some website somewhere says to solve a death wobble physics says to lean back a bit and carefully accelerate through it. That same website is you can poll 150,000 people and you will somehow get 160,000 different ways to solve tank slappers. I’m guessing the “physics” behind it is that leaning back takes weight off the front wheel and acceleration helps with gyroscopic stabilization. With that said I once watched a video of someone showing how gyroscopically stable bikes are by taking both hands off the bars, he then pushed right HARD and it went to death wobble, and then righted itself no problem, no hands. He didn’t have a dampener either he was on a 80s harley. I probably watched that vid 15 years ago and have. Never forgot it.

@Shadowwolf975 5 жыл бұрын
I did a -1 +2 on the old bike, -1 is down a tooth in front, just to expand on his comment. Changing the way the sprockets are set up will redistribute the torque, my setup for example you lose top speed but you gain torque, the higher you go in the rear, the more torque you have to play with, stunt riders will typically have an oversized sprocket on their rear and a hand controlled rear brake!

I highsided my first day riding due to ignorance. I was overconfident after riding in a parking lot for 30 minutes, and decided to go to a semi-busy street to force myself to deal with traffic (saying "you'll have to do it eventually. Don't procrastinate!"). Well, I needed to make a long left turn from a stop, and it was going fine until about halfway through when I must have stopped leaning left and accidentally jerked the handle right (speeds were too low for countersteering). I panic-grabbed the front brake and highsided to the ride. Had just bought the (luckily used) bike the week before, and had been afraid to ride. For good reason. Luckily, no one was hurt.

I have a Lerner license and I ride ninja 400. Yesterday I went for my first solo long ride. It was soo good and made me feel like I have a control on my life. Then I stopped at a gas station, there was a biker group with big bikes and ADVs. I said Hii to them and they replied nicely. Then they saw my bike and started to give me a lesson about how I am wearing wrong type of gears. Those gears are for touring motorbikes. I should wear leathers and sports jacket. I told them I didn’t knew that and I am still learning and don’t want to waste money on something expensive as I can drop my motorbike anytime. Then they started making fun of me. They said if I don’t have budget then I shouldn’t be in this hobby it is very expensive. I told them thanks for the advice and left as the atmosphere started to get very awkward for me. Then after 40 minutes of the experience I got passed by some old dudes riding on Harleys honking and shouting at me for following the speed limit and move the fuck out of their way. That made me very sad as i thought riding community is all about helping each other and encouraging others. But yesterday they made me feel like I am someone who shouldn’t be riding. Maybe they forgot that they started somewhere. I bet non of them born with riding skills. At first I was very demotivated and wanted to change my bike to something very expensive and expensive clothes and show them that their bike are shit. But then I calmed down and told myself that i shouldn’t listen to the people who compare their things to other people to decide who is superior. I feel riding is our personal choice, what we ride and what gear we wear, others shouldn’t give their advices for this. If any of them would have given me some advice about riding I would have appreciated a lot.

I'm about 8 months in, and I'm getting started pretty late in life (I'm middle aged). I've been going through all of the growing pains and making stupid newbie mistakes. For example, I didn't understand what the biker wave was (with the 2 fingers pointed down) when 2 bikers pass each other, so I had no idea what people were trying to tell me at first, and cars behind me would beep at me at some red lights if I was the first one there. I didn't understand that some intersections have induction loop sensors in the pavement in the area of the stop line, and my little dual sport does not have enough metal in it to trigger the sensor and tell the light there is traffic waiting there, so the light would not change unless I moved up past the stop line and let the car behind me pull up to the line and trigger the sensor. I feel like a smacked ass whenever I make these noob mistakes, but I haven't had anyone tell me about right or wrong gear yet, though. I just did a bunch of internet research and found stuff that's comfortable, versatile, and with proper protective features in my price range. Whether it's "right" or not will depend on how comfortable it is for the conditions and how well it protects me in a fall or slide, but I've heard that leather is one of the best materials when it comes to protecting against road rash and is more comfortable at high speeds because it keeps the wind from getting through. Since you're riding a Ninja, it's probably a good choice if you're doing a lot of highway riding. I go with Bohn armor because I can wear it under my clothes and it's breathable. It's like Under Armor with padding sewn into it on all of the major impact points for your upper and lower body. If it's warm, I just wear a long sleeve shirt and regular jeans over it, so I'm not too hot but I still have protection. If it's cold, I can wear heavier clothes and a jacket with a thermal/weather liner so I don't freeze to death, but still have all my base layer padding from the Bohn armor. The bottom line is you get what you pay for, but the good news is there's a lot of options out there these days for mid-range budgets. With a little searching, you should be able to cover all your needs without going broke.

I use the term cagers (kay-jers) to describe cars and trucks since they have a roll cage. Riding dirty- riding without a motorcycle endorsement

My roommate and I both ride. She rides a Rebel 250 that I sold her, just to commute to/from work. Her manager has literally never ridden a bike and he keeps telling her that he's going to get a 1400cc turbo 'busa. He's serious about it. She tells him he can't handle that, he says he can... He's literally never ridden. As for what I ride, it's a KZ1000-Police (which uses the KZ1000-J engine, which is actually the same engine that Lamborghini chose to use for their concept motorcycle in the 1980s, which is called the Boxer Bike if you want to look it up, and Lambo only made 6 of them). My bike's not quite as fast as the Lambo Boxer that used the same engine, mainly because it's a police bike, so with a rider on it, it easily weighs half a ton where the Lambo Boxer would weigh closer to a quarter ton with a rider on it. Still, it's nothing to sneeze at, there's a reason Lambo chose that engine. 56,000 miles, stock everything, improperly tuned, and I can do 0-60 in 4 seconds.

Tank slapper throttle out. It's like coming out of a curve the bike throttle up and the weight comes off the front tire and the bike straightens up. When in doubt throttle out!

I always took the term Squid to be what would happen to a motorcyclist that doesn’t wear gear after a bad accident! And yes this probably refers to them being paralyzed. As sad as it might be!

My friends tell me that ‘squid’ refers to how amateur riders have their bodies squished into the thing they run into at high speeds. (Imagine the squishiness when throwing jello at a wall).

Oh so that is what high siding is. Yeah I did that when I was a new rider. I thought my handlebar bounced off the road and that's why it happened. But it felt like my bike was bouncing around on the road, next thing I knew I was on the floor with my bike on top and my mate is panicking trying to get the bike off me haha. I was okay, bike was okay, rode home a little shaken up. BOTH my handle bar ends were scratched up and needed replacing.

If you do, I suggest you get as much trail&dirt time before you take to the streets. The dumps will occur at lower speeds and will actually take longer to happen. This will give you a solid foundation and when you do dump, the dirt is WAY more forgiving than anything on the street. Including the street. Dirt riding will give you a great sense of balance and "flow". One thing I'm sure about: You are gonna LOVE IT!! Good luck.

Chicken strips can also be worn off pretty easily just by forcing the bike onto its side in the opposite fashion as you'd normally keep the bike upright and get your weight off the bike so they don't prove anything, bit sad if you feel the need to remove them so people don't point them out.
