Oh no! First, I'd own up to the error and say something like, "I understand I was late and missed my scheduled test." Explain the situation. "Are there any other tests scheduled that I can sign up for?" If not, ask if they'd be willing to hold another test for you. Then I'd make sure that you are NOT late for that one.

My dept runs 1-2 per year - but often a department co-operates with other local deparments who run them on other dates and may accept you if you do it with a neighboring department, and the fire training center in your area might also run, so there should be multiple opportunities if you search around.
