As a microbiologist I am also anti Neosporin. I did my thesis on Ancient Egyptian medicine and its efficacy in modern context. As part of the study I compared their medicine against its modern counterparts. Neosporin is way too nonselective, thus prolonging the healing of wounds. Also, don't use a mixture of honey, garlic, and crocodile dung either. The best this is soap and water and a bandage.

At 15 i was getting off a motorcycle and ended up hitting the exhaust pipe with my leg. I ended up with a third-degree burn. My PCP sent me to a burn specialist. The specialist said that it could take up to 5+ years for the scar to lighten because of the severity of the burn plus my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. He told me to cover it up overnight and let it air out during the day. I asked about using vitamin E oil and he said the same thing but i tried it anyway. I would put vitamin E oil on gauze and cover it up for multiple hours within two months i could barely see the scar. And my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome causes my scars to be dark red and thick. So I was very pleased it made it so light. Now at 25, i can stare at my leg and I won't be able to find it.

My husband had some skin cancer removed from his face and his derm said to only put Vaseline on it - no antibiotic creams at all. It was a very deep well in his face and we just put Vaseline on it and kept it covered and it healed up great. She also said they HATE Neosporin and never recommend using it.

as someone who works in dermatology, specifically in skin cancer removal: AGREE!!! agree, agree, agree!! for both part 1 and part 2. we are constantly informing patients to not use neosporin or peroxide post-operatively for these exact reasons. the only thing we recommend for scar fading is sun protection and silicone gel or sheets. let the people know!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I will say, sometimes Vaseline just doesn't do the job. I had an injury on my face and needed stitches. The plastic surgeon said the just put Vaseline on the scar. I very diligently applied Vaseline for weeks with very little improvement. I switched to applying Mederma and the scar faded soooo quickly.

We lived with my mother-in-law with Alzheimers for a number of years before she passed. She got these (what we thought were) infected arms. They blew up like balloons, red, itchy. Regular doc didn't know what was going on, but the minute we took her to a dermatologist, they told us that Neosporin is the #1 allergen and they talk about it in conferences. I think she'd had a scratch or something (I can't remember how it started), but the Neosporin blew up. It was so sad and so preventable if we'd been told or if we knew. we don't use Neosporin at all anymore.

Thoughts on Aquaphor, which is basically medicated Vaseline?
@averagebear00711 сағат бұрын
I'm not a doctor myself but have one in the family and we've talked about this. He says aquaphor is better for dry skin because of the things added to it, but it has a relatively low amount of petroleum jelly (I think he said like only a third of the product? It's been awhile lol). But Vaseline is 100% petroleum jelly and doesn't have the additives so it's better for wound care. People can also be allergic or sensitive to the additives in aquaphor.
@sxerosie5 сағат бұрын
I googled it and aquaphor is usually recommend by derms over Vaseline since it has more of a moistening quality due to the added glycerin. It’s still petroleum based tho!
@averagebear0074 сағат бұрын
@sxerosie recommended by derms for what though? They each have their uses but which one is better completely depends on what you intend to use it for

I would like to hear her take on it too! I will say anecdotally, I’ve massage castor oil on my face and it’s helped reduce the appearance of my hyperpigmentation acne scars. Might be the castor oil, might be the increase of blood flow due to the massage or might be both 🤷🏻♀️

Are you are a younger GP? I've been to several older doctors who really don't know they should stop recommending Poly/Neosporin...wait, that makes me question if there's a difference between the two? I'm not sure we even have Neosporin here. I'm Canadian 🇨🇦 and allergic to *something* that's in polysporin. My family tends to just use salt water on a lot of cuts, in and outside the mouth 👄 but we're on an Island in the Atlantic so...😅

I love neosporin with pain relief for dirty cuts and scrapes. There's a lot of barbed wire and other metal out here on the farm and so I feel like it adds a little extra protection from infection and also helps with the pain. First I wash out the wound of obvious dirt with soap and water, then I apply antiseptic like rubbing alcohol or H2O2 if I can't find alcohol, then when the bleeding stops, neosporin and then a bandaid. It's how I was taught basic cut/scrape first aid.

What about Vitamin E supplements? Thanks kindly!💕
@StephanieDefinitely19 сағат бұрын
Not the doctor but just my 2¢- That’s different tbh but you still don’t want to take that as a supplement in excess either because it’s a fat soluble nutrient (so we can def get too much of it). And also it is contraindicated with some meds and will need to be stopped prior to surgery, etc. Generally the amount in a normal multivitamin is fine but I’d talk to your doctor or cardiologist before adding vitamin E to your supplement regimen. I actually don’t use vitamin E by itself but I do take CoQ10 for heart and brain health (and also because I’m on a statin) and my cardiologist was very happy to see that he didn’t have to mess with my supplements. Haha.

wait...if you don't recommend these items, why do you have the products linked as affiliates?? seriously? and I've wasted so so much money on all different brands of those silicone scar patches for a good 10 yrs or so with absolutely no results. they're good for protecting the area from the sun but not for softening them or reducing the appearance. I've noticed that keeping them moisturized before going to sleep with vitamin E-rich lotions like those with cocoa/shea butter and almond/coconut oil (tho I rarely put any oil directly on my skin, I prefer to use the lotions as they seem to absorb better), and then sealing the moisturizer with aquaphor does slightly help improve the texture & appearance, but only as long as you continue to do it.
@linda48223Күн бұрын
@@changelater01 hi. I would like to suggest glycerin on your scars. It soaks in nicely and *for real* draws moisture into your skin. Lotion generally locks in moisture that is in the skin while glycerin brings hydration that you can then baste/slug with diaper triple paste. @StephanieDefinitely19 сағат бұрын
No, it isn’t. The refining process used for petroleum jelly removes traces of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are a class of refining agents linked to cancer. It has been shown to be non-carcinogenic in oral and dermal exposure studies, for over a hundred years. In fact a lot of people have sensitivities to plant oils like jojoba, coconut, etc. and petrolatum is the absolute safest way to moisturize the skin.

@@lja530exactly. 👏🏻 If someone I know is claiming to be allergic to petrolatum I usually scrutinize their product to make sure it is 100% pure petrolatum with zero additives or scents, and almost 100% of the time the problematic product has been blended with something like a plant oil or wax or a flavoring/scent! (Even if it’s in a little tub it isn’t guaranteed to be straight petrolatum… that seems to throw people off.) By and large, it’s way more likely the additive is their allergen and not the petrolatum. 🤷🏼♀️ My skin is extremely reactive (since birth! my mom had to cloth diaper me because I react to disposable pads 😬) and I still have never had an issue with pure petrolatum, at 45 years old.

That’s funny because I thought dermatologists were doctors. I thought they went through medical school and then they chose dermatology as a specialty kind of like OB/GYN, cardiothoracic, surgeon, neurosurgeon, pediatrics, etc., etc. And you’re supposed to be a doctor? I think you should stick to dermatology and perhaps find someone who majored in English to write your scripts for you because “data“ is plural. Data show, not data shows. I wonder what other errors you make in prescribing medication‘s to your patients and discussing things with them, I noticed your first video you’re very scientific use of medical jargon “butthole“ because I guess “sphincter“ was determined to be too elevated for the unwashed masses and then the second time you referred to it it was the “behind.” Yeah, I’m gonna rush to you for the next time. I have a skin problem not
@StephanieDefinitely18 сағат бұрын
I actually did get my degree in English, but I think you need to stop being pedantic (and, frankly, mean!) for no reason. You should know what “doctor recommended” means in the context of our culture as a whole-she was saying that Neosporin was referring to what most people COLLOQUIALLY refer to as “doctors”, such as primary care physicians, pediatricians, etc. To use another example-when most people colloquially talk about “doctors,” like when a flight attendant asks for one on a plane if a passenger has a medical emergency-you *know* they aren't looking for a dentist or a dermatologist or a vet even though they are technically doctors… right? Also, she is probably using non-medical, euphemistic terms for anüs or sphin¢ter (or whatever it is you want to hear 😂) because she doesn't want her video to get censored or “demonetized.” I'm not sure if you know how the internet works, but they don't like creators to use graphic medical terms or images even if they are for educational purposes-so if she wants her work to reach the widest audience, she must choose her content carefully. She probably cross-posts these to other platforms like TikTok or Instagram with their own set of draconian content restrictions too. Hope that is a helpful explanation from someone who took a lot of English classes. 😉
