Hey Good People,
I got some good information for your learning about the common issues on the GM Eco Tech engines. They are notorious for timing chain failure.
In this video, I show you how to inspect and prevent catastrophic engine failure due to timing chain issues. These engines are interference engines, a d if they jump timing, they will bend valves.
I hope you learn something from this video. Enjoy and thanks for watching.

Alex

I was reading about this. Apparently, the newer engines are Direct Injection engines. When the engine is cold, and you run it for only short periods of time (less than 30 minutes) excess fuel is injected into the engine so it can run. That excess fuel does not always fully burn with the less time to combust. It leaves carbon which mixed into the oil. Lots of short trips in cold weather, more carbon. More carbon, the timing chain gets stretched as the distance between the pins on the chain is extended. Over 100,000 miles, that is a lot of stretching. Advice - mix in trips longer than 30 minutes every week. Also, oil you use should be API-SP certified or ILSC GF-6 oil as it can contain the carbon better (not perfectly, but enough to potentially reduce the timing chain stretch). I am hoping doing these things will allow my Buick Envison with a 2.0L Ecotec make it to at least 150,000 miles. However, I appreciate the tip to change the chain at 100,000 miles. I will do that as well.

@mrmarcink1300 3 ай бұрын
There is no more "conventional" oil unless you mean not labeled synthetic? Any brand name oil that is API GF-6 or GF-6b has synthetic esters as additives which would make them "semi-synthetic" this would explain at least some of the longevity, the rest is the 5k intervals.

Dropped off my 2014 Equinox at the dealership for check engine light issues, they found that the timing chain was starting to make noise. It’s got 108,000 miles on the odometer has had oil changes with correct Dexos certified oil at 5,000 mile intervals. We had no oil consumption issues until it reached 100,000 miles,now we use about a quart of oil ever thousand miles. Since we plan to keep the car we’re having it repaired.

I have used Heli-Coil kits onto many vehicle parts including body, engine mounts and internal engine parts as well. I have even used Heli-Coils on the Cadilac 4100 engine which was popular in the 1980's. Since the block was aluminum, I used double 1/2" inserts on the main bearing journals. I never had one of them come back for that problem again. I did work on other issues with the same cars over the following several years. So I can safely say that the Heli-Coils work well providing you install them correctly.

Alex had some great advice on the ecotech engine, as a semi retired mechanic with lots of experience( I just cant give up my shop) the best advice I can give is do not wait until it stops running, a timing chain replacement is under 1,000, can be done in 2 or 3 days not the end of the world but bent valves could total your car

@jimsix9929
@jimsix9929 5 ай бұрын
Ray it really depends on the oil, a car that gets a fast lube job every 7,000 could need a chain at 80K, if it is a neglected engine, like going over miles or cheap oil they can fail at 50K, use good synthetic 5w30 every 5K and it will last 200K, yes I said 5w30, the thin 5w20 is for fuel economy, not good for the engine, gas is cheaper than timing chains@@raypalermo1603

Unfortunately belts have pros and cons as well. They're more likely to stretch, teeth round off, or break then a chain is. Generally the problem isn't the chain itself it's usually the guides or the hydraulic tensioners. Low oil or lack of oil changes will cause these issues prematurely as well. I also see and deal with alot of ecotecs, most of the time I fix them unless too much damage has been done.

Hey ive got a 16 equinox 2.4 auto awd. Its showing 3 codes i think, p219a, p0420, p0014, p0013 which is mostly timing stuff, fuel air mix, exhaust. it runs great one trip next time splutters everywere with lose of power until get plugs burning hot or something. Ive definatly gotta get a new hose that goes to use to be a pcv on Valve cover. But can you tell me what i need to do the timing completeley. lifetime warranty parts i dont like when their cheap because it means ill still have to do it again. If you have time id like to know what to buy and a fair brand something to actually last. Also my engine had the tube stopped offf on engine so lots seals and gaskets leak. What seals and gaskets that wont come in a kit can i replace while tearing into that part of the engine and any other things you would suggest changing instead of what i said? Any seals i can get to def needs done. it has abt 200000. people complains abt the 2.4 but ive not had to do anything until now with a lil over 200. ours has been great and we live in the WV mountians so its been used well. I hope you can find the time, Thanks !!!

(Almost to the 97500mi spark plug interval and I was already gonna be in there) I pulled the V/C and there was about a centimeter and a half of clearance between the chain and the top guide. He'll be in monday for a timing chain, he's very happy I caught the chain before it trashed his engine.

There is an upgraded 10mm hex bung cover bolt for the top guide hole, so you don't have to tap the hole at all. There is 3 upgrades to the primary tensioner. Cloyes timing chain guide in the front is responsible for breaking. The bolt hole tolerance is too thin. The guide rattles and breaks, especially in cold below zero weather while not properly warming the engine. Bad oil maintenance can contribute to it breaking faster but I've seen the front guide break multiple times in very well maintained 2.4 LE5's. Cloyes could upgrade the guide, there is enough room to expand the thickness of the top bolt hole, they could use better plastic, they could beef up the guide but they have not. I have emailed Cloyes with evidence and specs but they won't respond with any help whatsoever. Mellings can have my business.

I have a 2014 Chevy equinox. The timing chain guide on top broke and my timing chain ate a hole in my valve cover. Long story short replaced everything except the sprockets in a timing chain replacement and now I have a loud timing chain rattle on a cold start with rough idle after about 20-30 minutes of driving. If I pop it in to neutral it idles a little better but it idles much better if I just touch the gas a little. Any ideas? Edit: forgot to mention that if I let it continue to idle roughly it throws the code p228d which is a high fuel pressure regulator reading high fuel pressure it then goes in to limp mode and the stabilitrack turns off. It’s the only code that appears and I’ve replaced the fuel pressure regulator but with no difference in symptoms. The code will go away after a few starts and the check engine light disappears. I pulled the valve cover off and the timing chain is taught. I changed the vvt solenoids as well. I’m at a loss and I’m running out of money to throw at it!

One min car engine ok next on restart 5 min later engine running poor. Replace solinoids and sensors still with problem. Pulled off cover and chain is drooping between cam sprockets. U think could be just tensioner issue. Looks like on this engine tensioner is on left side. Could this tensioner be issue and could just unbolt current tensioner stud/spring unit and put in new one to take up slack? So then dont need to remove cylinder head and put in new chain?

I strongly think that using a tread insert would fix and resolve the problem because once fixed the hole diameter in the aluminum is larger and stronger than when it was made. I kinda feel that all threaded holes in aluminum should have steel inserts from the factory since they would be stronger and reduce the seizing that steel bolts do in aluminum. of course I dont expect the factory to add all that work and expense just to save us trouble. so, are those motors pretty good other than that issue ?

@DevJB Жыл бұрын
Which engine code, -LCV? Just making sure, lol. If it's LCV 2.5 ecotec, yes you will want to remove the fragile plastic (insulated) intake manifold and throttle body while doing head gasket. (also clean them.) There is 5 bolts at the intake manifold gasket *replace gasket*. There is a lower bolt and 2 others, 1 or 2 hoses and a connector plug if I recall correctly. If you don't have a manual, research online first. Look at pictures of the intake manifold box so you know where the bolts are located before you begin. etc. ; ) If you do take the head off with the intake manifold attached. There is 95% chance the intake will break when you work on the head or move it around shop.

@Dev JB I don't have a manual, and I have been trying to find any type of information on the procedure but have had no luck mostly just removal of cam tower guard ( valve cover ) and timing chain replacement videos everything else is about the 2.4l eco tec motor which are different. It does have the 5 bolts on top and one underneath. I was wondering if I could pull it out with the head and remove it after. I'm a big guy and I was told I would have to get under the car to remove bottom bolts which wouldnt be a problem if I could fit lol. I have it jacked up now but barely fit to remove the oil from the oil pan

Hey there I can’t really make that call without seeing it for myself. follow my instructions in this video and you should be able to diagnose it yourself if the valves are met you would need another motor/Head job and at that point yes if the car is not sentimental and have very high miles you may wanna depart with it

Usually it's the Intake phaser that goes bad, for top side. Or the hydraulic lash adjusters HLA's, Cam sensors or VVT solenoids. Front side is usually front cloyes guide broken and leaking throttle body or bad TB connector or rotting ECM. Back side is usually the primary tensioner failed. Bottom side doesn't have many issues except for the oil pickup tube will get restricted if a guide has broken; the engine will need yanked and taken apart for cleaning or the oil system will be faulty and possibly cause chain slack soon after repair because restriction or pressure blockage for hydraulic tensioners and HLA's to work properly. With restriction or bad oil, the chain gets slack and the front guide will rattle worse, which will cause it to fail much faster than it normally rattles.

Dang sorry to hear that. That is a common issue on the Equinoxes. It really depends on the mileage and the condition of the car. If it’s in great condition and reasonably low miles, I say keep it. If you get another car, you may be inheriting new problems with that one as well.

@@danielc8037 You may be all right but you will never know until you do a cylinder leak test that’s the proper way to test it out if the valves are leaking in any kind of way without taking anything apart or you can just put the timing chain on aligned everything properly and cross your fingers. it will make noise when turning it because of broken components if no components are broken it’s not normal for it to make any noise

@@dannyc8617 Some rattle for about 4 seconds or less is ok, while it is building oil pressure through all of the tiny galleys to hydraulic lash adjusters and both tensioners within these first 3 or 4 seconds.
