Hello everyone! Thanks for tuning in. I know this is a LONG video, but I could not find a video that goes into detail enough for this type of job. We are replacing the timing chain in this 2014 Chevrolet Sonic. These engines are the same for the Chevy Cruze, and others such as the Vauxhall and Opel line up.
Links for tools and parts for Amazon:
Note: Channel will get a small commission from links below, and it does not cost you anymore to use them. Thanks for the support!

Thank you for comprehensive detailed information. I am a level 3 Toyota technician with 49 years experience working on many types of vehicles in England UK. So not being very familiar with this particular engine I searched for more information and your video is by far the best and most informative.Good job.

Hi I'm in the UK and I was absolutely dreading doing this job on my Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 turbo however after watching the video carefully I cracked on with it and you made what looked like a terrifying job a lot easier to do so for that I thank you greatly. I also appreciate the time you've taken to help DIY mechanics like myself and others. Best regards Neil.

This is a very great video for a common repair on these engines. Overall this repair is very involved, and pretty time intensive and I’m extremely glad I chose to do it rather than haul it in someplace. This definitely isn’t your typical 1hr brake or hub job…I’m about halfway through mine right now as we speak and ready to start assembling everything back together this week. So far everything has been pretty straight forward and easy going so I don’t foresee any issues cranking her back up!

I thank you for the indepth video. I just got a 15 buick Encore and didn't realize what it needed. Ended up needing a timing chain etc. Never have I attempted it. So I was glad when I found your video. The orange guide on my car was completely gone. So I am learning alot.

This is a great video! I helped me out tremendously. I am doing the same exact work on my Sonic I did take your advice and did not remove the A/C compressor. I guess my only critique would be to show torque specs for all applications. Thank so much! 👍

I agree with James Reed. I did all of this myself but the timing tool kit I got had no instructions with it so, as you said, because there was more than one position to install the pulse generator wheel I wasn't certain I had it correct until I saw your vid. Thanks.

Working at OPEL in Germany. I can tell you from now on we always pull off the oil pan, reason is the timing cover is not guided by the bolt but by the oilpan. The cover will never be in the right place again causing the oil pump to not fit dead center in the middle of the hole down there. Everything back together and either it makes a horrible siren sound right after the job or a few months after. End of the story is a broken pump and cover, happend a few times now. Replacing those and putting the oil pan last is the solution to that problem. What an awful design they did there.

Your last vid on this car was extremely helpful and I can't thank you enough for these videos. Im going to pop the valve cover off now and see if it jumped a tooth. If I end up having to do the timing im debating doing the head gasket too since the car has 120k and from what I've heard its not uncommon for this motor to need a head gasket at some point in its short life. Awesome video! Thanks for your time to shoot that video. GM recommends to remove the oil pan to properly perform that work which is important. But, I noticed you skipped that step. I know why. In order to remove the oil pan you'd need to remove the transfer case as well. It's a lot of work, waste of time. GM could easily do better because it's possible. However, I found a very easy way to remove the oil pan without going through all the unnecessary headaches that GM recommends. There's absolutely no reasons for that. Thanks again!

Thanks for watching! And you are correct, the oil pan removal is not necessary for this repair since it uses a chemical gasket.

Hi... Can you give some details on the easy sump removal system ? we have just taken on a Holden Trax that has filings in the oil filter and I feel dropping the sump is the only way to check for further filings and maybe kerf on the oil pick up strainer. thanks. Tarakai

Thank you so much for your video. Only one question: you torqued the two shaftcams bolt h24 only 30° and not 60° deg as requested. There is a reason for that?

Thanks great video. Does the pen for the crank has to insert flush to the flange? It looks like yours was flush to the block. Thanks 🙏

On the older Z14 engine the crank shaft pulley had to be tightened BEFORE the cams, the chain pulley on the crankshaft could rotate a few degrees if its not tight! It is also worth doing a full 2 rotations of the crank and re check the camshafts are timed again, this will take up any slack that may be in the chain. I have now done 4 of these on the Z14 all with internal water leaks on the gasket, is the A14 just as prone to this failure?

Thank you for this video..all the way from South Africa 🇿🇦 Please help me out..the exhaust camshaft gear turns and then locks and not turn the camshaft and only turns the chain, then the camshaft jumps out of timing.. And how do the camshaft lobes sit, I mean which direction do they point to for them to be really on timing I do have the locking tool but it's my first time using it Thank you in advance

So the crankshaft spins twice for every revolution of the camshafts. That would mean if you were not on the power stroke on Top dead center you would spin the crankshaft 360 degrees not 180 degrees.. correct?

Excellent video, I'm about to do this job. This was very informative. One thing, wouldn't you want to leave the crank lock tool in place so that you an tighten the crank bolt?
