Stephen Kinzer, Columnist, The Boston Globe; Senior Fellow, Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, Brown University; Author, The True Flag: Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, and the Birth of American Empire
In conversation with Jonathan Curiel, Author; Journalist
As President Trump takes office, how should the United States act in the world? Drawing on his latest book, Stephen Kinzer will transport us back to the early 20th century, when the United States first found itself with the chance to dominate faraway lands. That prospect thrilled some Americans. It horrified others. Their debate gripped the nation. The country’s best-known political and intellectual leaders took sides. Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Cabot Lodge, and William Randolph Hearst pushed for imperial expansion; Mark Twain, Booker T. Washington, and Andrew Carnegie preached restraint. Only once before-in the period when the United States was founded-have so many brilliant Americans so eloquently debated a question so fraught with meaning for all humanity. Join Kinzer as he discusses these impassioned arguments and their great relevance to the world of 2017.
Stephen Kinzer is an award-winning foreign correspondent who has covered more than 50 countries on five continents. Kinzer spent more than 20 years working for The New York Times, where his foreign postings placed him at the center of historic events and, at times, in the line of fire. While covering world events, he has been shot at, jailed, beaten by police, tear-gassed and bombed from the air.

Have been an ardent fan and follower of Stephen Kinzer since I first became aware of him; just after "All the Shah's Men" was published and Kinzer was making the public speaking rounds. For those interested in a thoroughly researched, fact-based, ideologically unvarnished recounting of US history, you really can't do better than him--intellectually and historically both rigorous and, above all, honest. Kinzer and his similarly-disposed-and-gifted friend, Chris Hedges, manage to speak truth in a world of fake news, fake history, fake narratives propagated by those courtiers-to-power who provide a pseudo-intellectual veneer to the self-serving narratives of the power-elite.

This is a great presentation, Mr. Kinzer is always so interesting and as far as I know, historically correct, thank you for this. Also, for an in-depth history of US-Iran relations, you can check ''Manufactured Crisis'' by Gareth Porter here on YT.

FYI waterboarding goes back to Rome. Sometimes I can't help think that waterboarding and baptism had a single origin.

You might be right, I read about that just recently and also it comes out in Joachin Phoenix' latest film "Mary Magdalene"...

I love Kinzer’s truths about our imperialist history. I would like to hear his views concerning the oppression of Palestine, which the U.S. taxpayers basically fund, and our government sponsors.

Wonderful comments and Kinzer is very correct about our (American) historical amnesia. On North Korea however, I don't think we really need to work with its neighbors as he says. It would be great if they go along with something, but the U.S. can't let North Korea get a nuclear tipped missile capable of hitting Honolulu. That's one military intervention I would completely support.

You say that like North Korea has ever gone out of its way to attack America.
