I was reselling for fun originally and then I lost my six figure income job. Then a week later my husband lost his six figure income job. We both found new jobs after a time and that was over 10 years ago. But reselling is a safety net for us, we will always be able to do this and can pay for food, bills and living expenses. We feel that depending on someone else employing you for your livelihood is too risky.

I've been selling for 7 years on ebay, changed business models a couple of times. The last 2 years I am making more than when I worked at a university. Luckily, we have insurance thru husband's retirement...which makes a big difference.

Spot on Kevin! Cost of living and source-ability of the location is key. I can get $10-$15 items all day, but $35-50 maybe one with 3 hours of looking. In that time i would rather spend 45 minutes sourcing 15 $10 items and having them listed in that 3 hours.

Just only go to garage sales with really cheap items that sell for $50+ online. It's really easy.

Only about 10 percent of my listed items currently are over $20. My store is doing great! Don't let anyone define you. Only you can decide how to travel your reselling journey.

Great points. Clearly a big key to turning a decent profit on low ticket items is buying them at very low prices.

The small items always move, they pay for "restocking". They draw more traffic to your store. The big ticket items, when you find them and they sell, pay the bills.

Wow, great video. We think alike, Kevin. I am not actively reselling but I used to have a booth. It was great for a season but my regular full-time job became too busy for me to continue with it. If I couldn't dedicate the time and effort, it wasn't worth it to me. I totally plan to either get the booth going again or some type of reselling when I retire. It's fun to me and provides a little side hustle. In the end, we should all do what's best for us and our families. PERIOD.

I totally agree. Most of my items are $20 and under but it's worth it to me because I can source these items for a low price which is important to me and one sale is only a few dollars under what I make in an hour. Also, I enjoy finding things that people who are in the same tax bracket as myself can buy and enjoy.

I just had this conversation with the buddy of mine in a while back. I explained to him that when I'm out sourcing yard sales and spending time sourcing, I have my kids with me and we spend time together and go to yard sales together and work on building that bond, and showing them how with some hustle you can make a good amount of money. So yeah, you can break it down to how much you make an hour, but then you have to put some more value on it.

Thank you for this mornings video. You did not have to share all this personal information with us but it was very, very helpful. Dave and Cary are always giving the impression that you are this super rich land baron! LOL! But to break it down for 'regular' folks gives them the knowledge to figure out their situations. And you growing up out here in California and being able to compare areas and cost of living is so very important. It is also the small things 'we didn't have cable because I didn't want to pay that bill' - reminds folks to think about their situation with eyes open and honesty. Folks need to figure out what they truly need, what effort they are truly willing to put into it and then they have their goals (and remembering they are very flexible!). Again, thank you for what you do to help all of us . Bless you and your family (including all those fur babies you pretend to not like!!!).

Always appreciate you keeping things in perspective for us. I sold on ebay part time while trying to get out of a 75+ hour a week job so I really needed to get the most I could out of my spare minutes. Fast forward a year, and I'm at a new job only working 50ish hours/week

Thanks for the vid and the good words. I love it when you "big boys" sell lower-priced things. I hear on different social media some resellers dismissing the lower sales. But, man, I've had s great week and a lot of my sales were lower. Sometimes, that's what I find.

I grew up with parents who let things pile up and they did NOT sell anything! But as they aged we have to get rid of stuff and I needed to learn reselling. I am so grateful for a community that teaches me. We have given lots away, but many things are special treasures that feel wrong to give away. So I learn what my parents didn't and am thrilled to exchange a few things I don't want for things I do.

I completely agree with you! I measure my wealth by how much my time is worth. The more you make per hour. the more you are able to have free time, which is the actual measure for wealth imo. Now, I know I'm late to the party but would love an explanation what's the idea behind these sheets and why they are by a sale and not by items?.. and also how do you keep track on where everything is, having so many items listed.

Totally agree on the dollars per hour metric being super important. On the YuGiOh cards it comes down to that number under the bottom right corner of the picture. There are different sets that have the "first edition" badge on it, so it's not 1 for 1 like Pokemon that way. But hey, I'm no expert on it by any means. Just learned some of the basics of the TCG. I'm sure you'll make a nice profit off of them though.

I’ve found that some of my sales go to quite rural areas. It’s like I’m providing a shopping service. They dropped and broke their salt shaker and don’t have the time to drive 2 hours to go to a town to look in 4 cook shops for a decent replacement salt and pepper and then drive 2 hrs back again. It’s cheaper to pay a rando on ebay.

Loved this Video. It is so true. I'm in Canada and stuff here is so different compared to the US. Also, I know my goal for this business as it's not my main source of income and I'm not out to make a 6 figure income. Not yet anyway...snails pace as a single mom of 4. I can't just give up everything else and go full throttle in something I'm still learning about.

Speaking of "parting it out" I had a lot of the older "Viper" alarms, the whole box wouldn't sale for 85$, but just the key fob with the screen, 159$! Sold every one I ever listed!! Crazy how that works huh?

Everyone has unique circumstances, so reselling strategies can vary dramatically. One more thing to pay attention to is the inflation we have been experiencing. As reselling costs were rising last year, I raised prices to compensate. I still continue that upward pricing. Comparing the first 3 months of 2023 to 2022, my sales up 25%. Sounds great at first. Not so fast. The bottom line is still around the same.

I'm from NYC and now I live in Western NY and I would need to make pretty much what u make to live comfortably. Everyone is different but we can all agree that not one way is the Right Way. People fail to realize that everyone is not in the same situation. Are you doing it full time or part time, living situation, environment sourcing. There is so many different factors. People should just take information pertaining to them and not compare to others

You are so right with different people's time being worth a different amount. All I have to beat is a $12 an hour Wal-Mart greeter pity job because that is all I am going to get in the wheelchair. Don't even actually have to beat the $12 since the various tax advantages to reselling make the reselling money worth more than the Wal-mart money would be.

I think I have around 75-100 hats in my pile to list, mostly farm related. I need to get a display head for the pictures. I currently use a cosmetology head with the hair, and I wonder if it turns a lot of people off from making a purchase.

When we started our business you were one of the first channels we watched. We like you bought everything that would sell. As our knowledge increased we found better and better items. WE are not full time but do it for supplemental income and ended up with more stuff than we had the time and energy to list. (We are retired) Thus we began focusing on things that were easy to list but more so on things of greater value. If you are part time as we are I suggest this business model. I had the best month ever last month. Of the first three channels we started watching you are the only one that remains. Thanks for the great content.

Thanks Kevin! I source cheaper items because there cheap! I like your model of selling. If I make 50 - 60 percent profit on 20dollar items , I'm ok with that. Usually their easier to list and ship. Also I like Gordon Lightfoot also!!

That is funny you brought up this topic, because I too sell on eBay, but just as a side hustle to help pay some bills. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve purchased something for a dollar, and sold it for $6 + shipping, and end up making around $3 profit (give or take), and my wife chimes in “Why do you waste your time for $3. My response? If I could take all the money in my 401k, and triple its value practically overnight, would it make sense to do it? OF COURSE!

I really enjoy selling used clothing, whether it be men's, women's or children's. My items generally sell in the $8 - $12 range. Will I get rich, NO but am I keeping alot of really nice items from heading to the landfill, yes, I am. In this economy, there are many, many buyers looking for good, clean clothing items for their families - hopefully, my store is the answer for them. Thanks for your insight!

Absolutely on the sourcing area, if you watch the Golden State Picker in California he makes gross 150,000 or more, but admits that he is in a great sourcing area and is retired doing reselling for extra income.

Imagine the Time and effort in reselling 3,000 separate individual non-quantity items at $20 just to gross 60k VS. 1,200 items at $50 = 60k 600 items at $100 = 60k 300 items at $200 = 60k You must hire employees or find better items with better profit margins to scale and make more money. Establish your goal and determine what your Time is worth. Pocket change is one thing; to hit six figures is another.

Another great video Kevin! This one should be pinned somehow always at the top for those who criticize. You do you! Personally, I already have a full time job. We do this for the time we spend together doing the business and easily run between 45 to 50% in profit margin. Our goal is a simple $500 profit each month which has helped over the years for the kiddo’s extracurricular activities plus has paid for all of our outdoor kitchen equipment. Definitely see us supplementing our retirement some day to help fund extra vacations and the like.

Mileage is not just gas - it's depreciation on your vehicle. You'll have to pay for repairs, and eventually you'll have to pay for a new vehicle. If you buy a vehicle and drive it 100,000 miles, will the IRS mileage allowance of $65,500 really pay for everything after residual value?

I look at percentages. The average return for the s&p 500 is 10.5 percent over time. If I’ve already driven somewhere I’m not passing up anything I can make money on. My expense of sourcing is fixed at that point ( not my overall costs). Even if I buy an item for $1 and sell it for $3 I made 200 percent on my money. And that’s not annualized. Sure I always look for better higher margin items but I don’t pass up profits. Midwestemporium 5:02

We call those bread and butter items. Most $20. I think monthly my average sale is closer to $35. The larger ticket items can also have a larger buy in price so sometimes the profit ratio on the cheaper items is better.

I'm fine with being a bread and butter seller. I hope that I will continue to build up my average sell but I'm comfortable starting out with affordable items. I make sure I am making what I made at my past job so I can share the responsibilities

I know this is a bit personal but how do you pay for insurance, college funds, mortgage, and the extra life expenses? I am a teacher as well and just started this side hustle but I unfortunately didn't realize the " defect rate" area of selling. I cancelled a few items that were a pain to ship or low value and that kicked me into the below area. This drastically affected my sales and I hope this lesson helps others that this does hurt sales and is an area of ebay that is brutal. I am at 2.02 and having some hot sales to get back on the good side. Thank you for what you do. Also the podcast is great.

My opinion is roll with what works for you and what youre happy with. My rule in general is if I cant make $20 in profit I pass it up. You gotta think about it like this. I take immense pride and integrity in my listings. I wont sell anything dirty and I restore items as much as I can. I want my buyer to be extremely happy with the item I sold them. This takes time. Time is money. Lets say you can sell 20 items in a day at an average of $10 profit for each item. For example just say you have $4 average into each item. Thats $80 + $25.80 in fees which puts us at $95.80. Is the shipping free or does the buyer pay? Do you see where this is going? I had a fellow reseller ask me recently what he was doing wrong because he had 4k listings yet wasnt making any money. After looking at his store it was clearly evident that it was the items he was offering for sale. He had thousands of items at like $12-15 with free shipping. He was literally making only $5 an item if that. Figure in your time, supplies, storage, taxes etc is it worth it to you? Theres lots of easy jobs these days starting at $15 which after taxes for an 8 hour day equals approximately $95 a day. Its all about preference and your lifestyle. Like I said before $20 after cost, fees, shipping, taxes and so on is my bottom line. I only have on average 150 listings. My sales are approximately 4k a month. So my point is that with only 150 listings im outselling the seller with 4k listings that spends easily 2x if not 3x the amount of time I do doing the same exact thing. His pictures, listings are less than to be desired as well.

No, clothing doesn't need to be tested, but it does need to be cleaned per eBay policy and a statement saying so in your description. I'm just curious if you "clean" each clothing item you list? Do you wash vintage shirts? What is your process?

A dollar is a dollar. Most of my sales aren't that high priced. I live in an area of Florida where most people have sold the good stuff before they moved here. There aren't a lot of garage, yard and church sales. I rely on the thrift stores and as you know the prices have gone up. Luckily for me I do find some things they missed. I recently left my job and i have plenty of time to hoard (lol) and list.

I like Gordon too. He's 82 right now. There is no one right way to run an ebay visit, keep records, ship, etc. Everyone has to figure out what works for THEIR business and not tell others how to do it. All the "you should" that all of you guys (and gals) have to deal with in the comments is ridiculous. Suggestions are fine but don't pontificate, people. I doubt that any two resellers do EVERTHING in the same way. I have no idea where to even begin to get a QR code for my "places".

The amount of variance in value in a binder like that can be insane. I used to work in a card store. The value of that binder could literally be anything from the $5 the used binder is worth to many thousands of dollars. Yugioh cards on average are the worst of the common tcg games but it doesn't mean that there couldn't be crazy value in there. You generally have to look them all up unless you are a Yugioh expert who knows them on site and even then there are huge price swings from one printing to the next.

I eBay VERY part time, maybe 10 hours a week total. I earn what is equivalent to a whole week at my full time job in a month. That’s a 20% income increase, and sourcing is my most favorite thing! I’d shop the estate sales, garage sales and thrift shops if I wasn’t an eBay seller.

I think it boils down to ROI overall and that's whether youre selling $10-15 items or $100+ items. You can sell an item for $15 and have a better ROI than the item you sold for $100. The money is made in the buy. Keep your buy cost low enough and it won't matter what you sell the item for as long as you are able to push volume. With that said my best find recently has been the board game "Hotels" worth up to $220 complete. The hunt is always a blast 💪

I wouldn't auction off old first edition cards. I would check the prices of the first edition cards, and if there are valuable ones, i would get them authenticated at a card shop.

Running a business is about Profitability. Your $5 is no different from someone else's $5. Most people that work on smaller margins are in a specific niche/category and can reliably source, having to pay more for that reliability. You have to spend ALOT of time to source your inventory which demands higher end goods and from many different categories to make the profit. Again, same types of money just different ways to go at it, what is there to hate? Personally I find working at smaller margins more reliable and easier to scale.. Some people may not want to scale and that is fine. It's almost as if there is some saying for those that care about how you run your own business to care about their own :D.

Looks like you sell Albums? I’m wondering if they can be damaged when shipping in hot weather? I’m hesitant to sell records and candles for that reason.

Most of my sales are smaller, lower cost items, but they add up. If I wasn't willing to sell stuff like that then I wouldn't have that. High value items are nice, but those aren't a dime a dozen like smaller profit items. You just don't find those kinds of items everywhere all day all the time. If you're reselling as a secondary income or side hustle, just focusing on big profit items makes sense and might work because you're not trying to put that much effort into it anyway. You don't wanna work yourself to death for a little bit of profit if it's an extra thing you do on top of a full time job. But if you're not I think for a lot of people to be successful as a full time reseller you *have* to be willing to sell the stuff that isn't worth too much either. That stuff gets you through bad times and days with low sales. And if you're serious and are trying to do this full time than be serious about it. Put the work in. You shouldn't have a hang up making a little bit of profit as long as you're making money. Looking at my numbers it's almost like the little profit items actually pay the bills (shipping, packaging materials, subscriptions, fees, etc.) and the other stuff is where the overall profit comes in. Because of that small stuff I can appreciate a big ticket item selling and know that's all profit at the end of the day and I don't have to worry about a lot of that going to costs because I didn't have the little stuff to cover costs. Another thing I always tell people if you see an item that isn't worth very much than try to lot it up with something else that makes sense. For example, a single common PS2 game might not be worth much but if you have 5 games like that and put them together suddenly it's a nice sale. Oh, and something else: people are much more likely to impulse by a low cost item than a big ticket item, especially in this economy. They're more likely to try to beat you up on the price on big ticket stuff than the little stuff.

8:45. I THINK SELLING LOTS OF ITEMS IS BETTER THAN SELLING A FEW. HIGH DOLLAR ITEMS. I KNOW A SHOP THAT DOESN'T SELL MUCJ. CAUSE PRICES ARE TOOOO HIGH AND HE DOES THAT. Good morning Kevin. I Love lightfoot! Sundown. I'm trying to do monthly not hourly calculations. If I can pay my bills and not struggle too much. Being smaller, I would probably cry looking at hourly. I live in the cheapest place to be on the ocean. That profit margin, people forget. One group I'm in a guy sells furniture and share those 50K a month screenshots and everyone oohs and aahs. But that doesn't include costs like shipping. Folks need to stop telling Dave to quit his job. He makes a LOT with his job and has some freedoms with it. The way he works, he would probably be bored without the day job. He's doing life smart, he works ebay and sponsorships(not the right word...) until he can COMFORTABLY have only ebay.

I make six figures and my fiancé and I do eBay on the side I’d say about 5 hours a week. We use eBay to cover our Car Payments and Travel.

i seen one or 2 cards in that deck which was worth something a year ago but the market has set a bit know, i would look up any that has 1996 at the bottom right, most of them will be 1st print, condition is everything for most people but it is hard to judge if you don't no what your looking at. me myself i would auction, just because of the time your have to put into looking up most of them dark magician (there a girl one too) and blue eyes are the poster cards for the anime so look them up

I’m in California and margins are not that great like where you live…. We will never get a PS2 console for $5 dollars here lol. I have my 9-5 plus reselling plus Amazon flex to survive this “amazing” State that I can’t wait to leave. My wife and I are planning to leave in 2024 and she can’t even help my on the reselling business due to my son disability! God is great and we will succeed!

What you think What he makes at his merchandise store? And he is on all social media, where he also makes money from. All his sponsorships, links, etc. Kevin got really commercial. He said it before, he need the reselling also to make content on social media and from the social media he get viewer sales, merch sales, people using his links, people buying expensive Eneman, etc. Reselling is needed to facilitate all his other commercial business. I think he make the same or more from all the other things he does. Pretty genius and smart 😉

If I didn’t do KZbin I think I would work 50-60 hours a week reselling and sell more than I do now. But the money from social media makes this possible.

A shame you didn’t make more as a public school teacher….here in Northern Virginia, teachers earn an average of $65K/year with some making more than $100K/year. But cost of living is much more and you can’t buy a house that’s move-in ready for under a half million. In fact, many town homes cost more than a half million…
