I guess Gupta knows CNN used the term horse de-wormer in a derogatory way. I'm surprised he played it so coy - he could point out it's simply not a lie (it IS a horse de-wormer, AND a medicine used by humans, so either of those would be a correct statement) or how Rogan skips over the bigger point they make which is that it is recommended against by the FDA and CDC and it had been better had Rogan simply gotten his well-tested vaccine instead of using an untested and warned-against treatment against a disease about which we still don't know that much. But then - Rogan is quite a strong debater, who can probably talk the earth flat, while Gupta is a doctor who isn't too good at the word games so he probably figured he'd lose.

Way back when British television was _really_ good, we had a number of 'talk shows', but old school, like Dick Cavette (Sp?). Ones such was Michael Parkinson, and David Frost. I can remember which - I'm guessing the former, as the latter was more political - but not long before Orson Welles past away, he was interviewed. Naturally, generally speaking most wanted to him to talk about 'Citizen Kane', and 'The Third Man', which, by the time he reached his more orotund point in his life was, to use a very old phrase 'Old Hat'; in otherwords, boring. So, the interviewer took a different tack: in the green room, prior to the interview was going to take place, the interviewer said, after Mr. Welles had died, he simply told him was: all I want to talk is about film, and film making, nothing more, nothing less. And so it was. Wells lit up a double-corona cigar (since people smoking on television was a given), and that's exactly what happened. A simple, yet broad, but also deep, conversation about films, without a deep dive into any of the one's he directed, or stared in. An apocryphal story goes the Welles was utterly impressed by the interview, because a) it was relaxed, and b) he was able to simply open up, because the guy interviewing spoke less, but listened more, so anything he (Welles) said, would segway into a thoughtful question, as the interviewer was actually paying attention ... I'm not saying Joe Rogan did the same here, but in all his prior podcasts, you can tell even though it's his show, he had no need to dominate the conversation, especially not by letting off a series of rapid fire questions, then only allowing the guest a moment to process, and begin to answer one of those, before firing off another set of questions. That's not an interview, that's a rant/vent at someone you dislike. If you are not going to act with civility, and a touch of humility, during an interview, as the interviewer, you may as well not conduct one, at all ... I hate to say this but Sean Hannity, and Tucker Carlson are pretty bad at doing that (on the other side, at CNN, MSNBC, and so forth, there's too many to mention). But, on the same network, you had Shepherd Smith, and, still, Chris Wallace, neither of whom did/does that, and actually have conversations. Perhaps the most unlikely is the numerous Jon Stewart/Bill O'Reilly interviews. The remarkable thing was although both clearly disagreed with each other, there was no real animus, nor rancour between them, especially when they invited each other on their own shows. Granted, I doubted they became drinking buddies, but you could tell there was respect for each other, which meant a decent flow of conversation ... That's perhaps the main critique of Rogan: he tends to be seen as too appeaseable, meaning he's pretty stupid. But that, I very much doubt. He doesn't punch when the other guy is falling; if anything, like was said, he would help them back up. And he most certainly doesn't have a room temperature IQ; I think he uses his EQ more, to tease out as much as he can, hence the runtimes, because he is smart enough to know how much he doesn't know, so is always looking for answers, whether it be out of intellectual curiosity, or, as here, pushing for intellectual honesty, integrity, and responsibility ... As interviewers go, because there need not be a set length, that gives him the freedom to keep on asking questions, when not affixed to a really tight schedule ... and thus enables him to be the 'active listener' ... Yes, he does have a habit of using MMA references, but that's because that's his wheelhouse, and comfort zone, especially for many of his listeners, and thus is able to use a know exemplar to simplify - but not make simplistic - a talking point ... which often takes rapid-fire thinking to do so ... Finally, if I may, he has laid clear that he feels politically homeless. He's pro-2nd Amendment, but has absolutely no issue with Universal Healthcare, and also giving people the means to lift themselves up, both of which, like here in the UK, doesn't align easily in a state of a political duopoly. I, honestly, feel the same way with our two main parties, as both have good ideas, but which are also attached to some pretty dumb ones ... whom, then, does one vote for ...? Trouble is that, whilst both the election systems here in the UK, and there in the US, are clearly broken, the alternatives I have studied, tend to, more ore less, be based entirely on coalition governments, often involving three, or more, parties, which, at any point in time, can be given over to internecine, then sectarian, 'warfare', within, thus causing the government to crumble. Italy is a classic example of that. However, with a duopoly, instead of going for the devil you know, as was, it's going to be whom is the least worst option: Trump may well win in 2024, but Biden then may well win in 2028 ... In fact, I think America needs to rethink the whole two, 4 year terms, because eight years is nowhere near enough for a President to enact change, especially in service delivery, as the first term almost constitutes hoping to do just enough to win a second term ... and what can any President do in four years, in a country that is, more or less, almost is own continent, even without Canada ... And especially right now, at this point in time, where things are positively seething ...

Rogan didn't want to knock him out or the conversation would have ended right there. Joe did what he wanted and got what he wanted no need to beat the little man down anymore.

Your assessment was very generous to gupta. Very generous. Especially considering following this interview he got right back on the CNN and continued telling the exact same type of lies that Rogan accused him of. Gupta is a doctor who just got b**** slapped about medical information by a guy who tells jokes and commentates on being punched in the head...

Honestly this is so insightful (spelt wrong). This breakdown i can completely understand and is so interesting! When i watched the podcast as a JRE fan i know his stance on things and the way CNN reported. But the way this is broken down makes me really appreciate how good at his job joe is! I never thought he was a “technically great” conversationist but hes a normal guy who knows when hes right, accepts when hes wrong and questions what he doesnt know. It maybe true but it completely diffuses those who go in too speak with him with a personal agenda

The knockout came later when he got him to go along with they lied (when sanjay said I don't know why they would do that) and Rogan said, if a network is willing to lie on something as insignificant as a comedian, it makes you question what they are lying about when it comes to Russia.

I'm so thankful that you're providing us with the professional verbiage and jargon that we're otherwise unfamiliar with. Like when Gupta tried placating to Joe by not mentioning the medicine but instead used the "one-up move" to put himself into a sympathetic, yet dominant position. We all *knew* what he was trying to do there (I personally call it "politician talk") but for it to have a label and a clear pattern that can be recognized is SUPER helpful for future reference. Love the channel, Prof. You've earned a subscriber.

On a side note, I also think Gupta could have balanced the conversation out by just, you know, ADMITTING the truth and tactfully rebuking CNN's biased coverage on this topic.
@alexanderlyon3 жыл бұрын
You're probably right. I'm guessing if he just tackled the issue head on from the start, Rogan would have not beat him up. He only beat him up until he admitted CNN's mistake.

My favorite moment was Gupta repeating after Joe, saying "You watched." It sounded almost like he was astonished someone was watching CNN. Also, though, he was clearly dismayed that he was facing someone who had prepared to have this particular argument.

You don't need to "be a lawyer" to know if a statement is defamatory. Even if Gupta was speaking of defamation in a legal purely legal context, he was still dodging, avoiding, and being coy. He's a no-good.

It'd seem you _do_ have to be a lawyer to know if a statement is defamatory, because as a lawyer I can confidently tell you that the clip of CNN that Joe shows here contains no defamatory statements. None. Zero. Nada. In fact, all of CNN's statements made in this clip are true on their face. - The closest thing to a defamatory statement in this clip is the use of the term "livestock drug" in the crawler, and even this isn't really close. Technically Ivermectin _is_ a "livestock drug" in that it's a drug used on livestock. It's not _exclusively_ or even _primarily_ so, but to win on that you'd have to prove that CNN was using it specifically in the sense of "for livestock only." That's impossible to prove, and even if it were proved, it would be more of a defamation of Ivermectin than of Joe. Plus, Joe's a public figure, so he would have to prove the term "livestock drug" was not only categorically false but also made with actual malice instead of mere negligence - again, nearly impossible on the face of the statement. You can't simply infer malice from the presence of the statement itself. - The anchor's statement of it is even tamer: she says it is a "drug used for livestock" which does not imply exclusive use on animals and is 100% prima facie accurate. - Joe _did_ tell his Instagram followers that he was treated with several drugs, and that Ivermectin was one of them. 100% prima facie accurate. - The FDA and CDC _do_ warn against using Ivermectin to treat Covid. 100% prima facie accurate. There just ain't no defamation in this clip. There does seem to be an attempt to make Joe look bad, but that is not defamation even of a private person, let alone of a public figure. Now, CNN may have defamed Joe at some other point - if so I'd bet it was Stelter bc he's a hack and a weasel. But that raises the question: if there's defamation in another CNN clip, why didn't the show use _that_ clip? Joe either went too far claiming CNN's statement was defamatory, or he just failed to back that claim up with proof.

I think the CNN folks were careful to say that "Rogan took a medication used in horses" (which is technically true, albeit misleading) as opposed to claiming that he took a horse dewormer (that is-that he took a formulation specifically made for horses). On top of that, Rogan is a public figure and would have to meet the higher "actual malice" standard in a libel suit, meaning that he would have to prove that CNN had serious doubts that Joe Rogan "took a medication used in horses" at the time they made the statement (a private individual would not have to meet this standard to recover damages). He would be unlikely to prevail in a libel suit.
@Igni-bu5mz2 жыл бұрын
@@EduardoVelezIII Appreciated analysis. Are you a lawyer? I'm pretty sure I was largely typing out of anger when I posted that. I don't even remember exactly what was stated by either Rogan or CNN in this case. I thought CNN had actually said "Horse dewormer" but I'm not sure anymore. Still, if the application of the drug is useful in providing symptomatic relief, or if it can reduce the duration, I'm all for it. CNN were out to get him in any case.
