Negative Ghostrider. Self-deprecating jokes have been part and parcel with Disney's Brand since Frozen, probably sooner. The Simpson's digs at Disney don't actually hurt Disney and help ease the reality that they own most of video entertainment.

As an animator and a bit of a Disney historian, it’s worth remembering that Disney started out as Great Depression-era comfort entertainment; To lift the people’s spirits through the real-life darkness of the depression and WWII with visions of an idealistic magical world. That’s what it was, and still is to some extent. Their content has always been producer-driven “product”, not director-driven artistic statements. To be a part of Disney is to agree to work inside those parameters, even though creatively, you and the product will certainly suffer for it. After Walt Disney’s death, the company was later started on the path to becoming the soulless corporate entity that it is today. It is the talent and contributions of much lesser-known individuals who made the later films hits. Disney is the only place where (especially in the case of animation) the films can be such massive hits that make tons of money, but few people know who the directors are, and few received financial compensation in proportion to the wealth their creations generate for the company. The corporate behemoth Disney is now too big, and a bully. The company uses their power and army of lawyers to change copyright law to their liking and prevent IP’s from entering Public Domain as long as possible, even though they made their money from IP’s in the public domain themselves. Also, since Disney is in control of so much of Hollywood’s marketshare, they bully theaters, employees, and customers alike to accept their low salaries, high prices, and other outrageous terms, while the products get worse and worse. So... it’s not sad that the company is not doing so well lately.

I disagree with the idea that Disney the soulless company started out AFTER Walt's death. I argue it started while Walt is alive, somewhere after the Strike, when he can't even trust his own animators, and clearly become manifest sometime in the 1960's. EPCOT was the biggest red flag to that soullessness...

@@axelpatrickb.pingol3228 You may be right in the way that Walt Disney’s company very soon became an extension of his weaknesses and failures. In spite of Walt’s negative points however, I do credit him with caring a lot more about the quality of his product than about money. He was in a lot of debt most of the time, and many of the films were not successful when they premiered. It was only after Disneyland opened (which had been a gamble) that the company turned a reliable profit. Walt was for sure a Capitalist, but I think the fundamental difference between him and most executives today is that he was interested in financial success as a *byproduct* of the quality of the work, not Profit as an end unto itself. The pure avarice and cynicism displayed by the Disney company of today is different in character to the old days.

I agree with you. I just don't believe that culture is shaped top-down. Even "How Disney Ruined Culture" sounds great and captivating, I do also think that "How culture ruined Disney" would also apply. Why? Because culture is created from below, from above, from the left, from the right, from the air, from the ground... culture is born as the Universe did: through crashes. Hadn't Disney created lovely endings and cute characters that people wanted to see, it wouldn't be what it is today. You can't just judge an idea leaving away its context. Its unfair and misleading. The fairy tales, dark endings and gruesome death may have been a very symbol of the eighteenth century (I don't know specifically), but the twentieth century was brutally shaped by death and wars and the worst atrocities. Maybe society NEEDED that cuteness, maybe they needed stories that made them believe that life can be different. Whilst discussing culture, I think that the money-making machine argument shouldn't take so much place. Yes, they found (and forged) a formula that succeeded among a society that psychologically needed those stories. And they perfected it through a century! That's amazing. And as they have so much power, they buy what they see people love. Stories have been told since we're human. The story structure that we see on the latest movie is pretty much the same that Aristotle described three thousands years ago. The Hero's Journey was always present on blockbusters. I think that when society changes, because of the context (a pandemic may be it), culture can't help but change. Maybe when the planet starts to show more drastically that it is being devastated passing points of no return, it will be stories that will make us realize that nothing else can be done, so, instead of suiciding, we could watch happy, cute, lovely films while we gradually disappear. Wanted sad endings, huh? Thanks for the video. I couldn't have thought this without it.

I think the worst part about Disney, by far, is their influence on copyright law It's also hypocritical, since they mostly adapted tales that had become public domain, but prohibit anyone else from doing the same with their work, by extending copyright durations to ridiculous stretches.

Kind of. Yes they pushed for the extension but the whole process was done more to put our copyright in line with Europes at the time. Furthermore, the current character of Mickey Mouse is trademarked so that was not what they feared losing as they couldn't.

There is a very short scene in the movie Frozen, that I think perfectly captures what this video is all about. Remember when Ana is singing "For the First Time in Forver"? She is jumping and dancing around a hall full of paintings that are references to very famous ones. On one moment she jumps over a coach, and imitates the posture of a girl in a painting that is behind her. That painting is The Swing, the legendary masterpiece by Jean Honoré Fragonard, one of the most well known images of the Rococo Art and era in the XVIII Century. That painting illustrates a very young and beautiful girl in expensive clothes being swing by an old-looking man covered by the shadows in the background, while another young man is hidden in the bushes in front of the swing, secretly spying the girl´s underwear, while she is looking at him and deliberately opening her legs to let him see her undies and losing one shoe on the way. Basically, it is a scene that pictures a sugar daddy swinging his sugar baby while she is playing a sexy game with her secret lover right in front of him. In the Frozen version of that painting, there was no old man, and no man hidden in the bushes. The girl was being pushed directly by a young and handsome looking man and they were just a happy, young and ideal couple, with no mischief or picaresque elements that made the original painting have value and a message. That represents exactly what Disney does to the art they work with: In an attempt to made it be cute, sweet, pleasant-looking and idyllic they don´t care about destroying or taking away every single aspect that gives sense and purpose to the original work, because that´s how they consider art and entertainment should be and that´s the philosophy of what they do, make soulless and cloying adaptations that can be digestible and attractive for everyone, and I think that this phenomena increased a lot in the last years since Disney don´t care about quality anymore, just about moneymaking.

The story of the production of Frozen also is 100% Disney, it was originally going to be an adaptation of Andersen's "The Snow Queen". Which casts what became Elsa as the villain.

Clif Massey people being able to take art and rework/modify it is how you have so many KZbin vids, including this one... since they are showing Disney clips and adding voiceover, which is a similar premise to the painting. And as a father of a 4yr old who likes the movie, I can understand and appreciate why they made modifications.

I grew up in Germany, my parents never showed me Disney films. I still have not seen most of them, but I found them uncanny, since I grew up on the original fairy tales with their original endings. It feels like a kind of censorship, what Disney is doing.

It mostly bothered me with Hercules. What they did with the gods was unforgivable. They made Hades into a Satan when he was one of the most chill gods, they made Zeus and Hera good parents, when Zeus just wanted to breed with anything that moves and Hera was fueled by envy... And the list goes on.

a movie is usually too short for characters to naturally fall in love when romance isn't its focus (with the exception of like, side characters having some cute moments in the background). i'd much rather see only hints of romance and lots of chemistry in the actual movie and read a couple of fanfics if i decide that i really like some pairing

Missing the mark a bit. The cutesyness in itself isn't the problem, it's that Everything. Is. The. Same. Omitting the walking torture from the litle mermaid or the self mutilatio of Cinderella's sisters isn't a bad thing, it's that they are virtually interchangeable. It's hard to put a finger on just what makes the disney treatment so recognizeable, but it's not just cuteness. Maybe it's th sentimentality in general. Maybe it's the cloying family values aesops. But the net effect is that you have a corporate juggernaut whose works are so predictable and so omni present that it infects everything - Not even Shrek managed to escape the rom com tropes! And now it's only going to get worse.

But judging by how popular their output is, at least some people who are aware of the negative effect must be consuming it. Btw, that study about the heroines, at least as described here, is flawed. As much as I agree that identifying with Cinderella or Belle can only lead to bad stuff, if you start with abused women, you have to also ask women who were lucky enough not to be abused, and then compare the percentages of women in the two groups who identified with the self-sacrificing heroines. Just saying.

Excellent points! I like heartwarming stories, but I also like dark and unsettling. I'm glad for having learned in grade school about the Cinderella with the stepsisters cutting off their heel and their toes and the blood coming out of the *golden* slipper. And Disney keep doing live actions of its own movies to remember everyone its associations with those stories, doing that with the best technology there is, reminding everyone that nobody will do a Cinderella movie with a best quality than theirs, or with the same impact, and renewing the childish idea that there is just one way to know a story. @@persona83 I know you've written this already months ago, but still - I see such bs just too often & therefore decided to shoot you some facts about that. Women get overall harsher sentences for the same crimes than men, not lesser ones. That besides the statistics that clearly show that women in general commit less crimes in numbers and less serious ones. But if you look at women and men commiting the same crime, taking murder as an example here, women get much, much harder sentences than men. Especially if the victim was male. You can even see this in such grim things like childrape cases; when man rapes a girl, he gets a significantly (!) lesser sentence then if he did it to a boy. Misogyny and patriarchy / androcracy are alive and well; thanks to millions of people, esp. men, turning a blind eye on it (while simultaneously profiting from it) or even spreading more of it & thus preserving the status quo.... There are parts of this system that hurt (lower "ranking") men too - but it's also men that created it in the first place and that are upholding it still today. It didn't fall from the sky. So - even if you didn't create it, you still get your hands dirty when you spread lies like this, because you make yourself guilty of upholding and defending it.... thanks for reading.

There are many, many, many things to criticize Disney for, but I don't think changing old stories to have a different message should be one of them. These old stories were often written in very autocratic times and basically had the message "be obedient and suffer without complaining, and you will eventually receive a reward (probably after you died). Otherwise you will meet a nasty end." I don't think that's something we need to bring back. And a good part of the problematic aspects of Disney stories are actually a remnant of these old fairytales (the limited agency of women, for example). Disney is like an empire, out to conquer as much culture as possible. Like an empire, Disney is on a civilising mission, out to tame and cleanse our stories to make them "Family friendly", or make it hard to watch movies that can not be converted, like Aliens and Die Hard both are 20th Century Fox films, that is so it is very disheartening to see the Simpsons and Home Alone with Disney's name attached. Watch Tony Stark in Iron man 1 before Disney bought Marvel. He is a womaniser, alcoholic, cynical, sarcastic and rude. Look at Tony Stark after Disney bought Marvel, He has anxiety, doesn't drink and is cracking jokes every 2 seconds eventually he becomes a father and lives in the Forest, they never go deeper into his struggles with Anxiety and alcoholism. In fact Disney doesn't allow alcohol, drugs and smoking in their movies no blood or swearing (well you get like 2 swear words a movie) this makes it very hard to explore deeper aspects of life like the consequence of death or addiction. I would have love if they explored Tony's alcoholism further because that doesn't just go away after one movie or because you are now a family man.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love Disney, but at the same time, I hate what they've become. I hate the corporate behemoth they've mutated into under Iger, I hate the monolithic monstrosity that buys up companies like Marvel, Lucasfilm and freakin' FOX, as well as all their IPs just because they can, I hate the company that has become the embodiment of the worst aspects of Eisner, Iger, and whatever party was responsible for screwing around with copyright laws. I personally want a return of the classic Disney that made lovable, entertaining animated films and none of this crap they've been spewing out, but I fear that might not be possible with the way everything's been going. This video was preceded by a MasterClass by Iger. It's too late ;-) No seriously, I still think that Disney are making good material (I purely defend them on an entertainement and artistic level, not a politics). Frozen, Marvel, Brave have some decent morality. They failed to did something meaningfull with Star Wars (but kids still love it so maybe there is more than what a cynical nostalgia is making think about it). At the same time I too can only agree with this video when they say they ruined some cultural part of story (but would I know anything about the original fairy tale if not from Disney's storytelling?). There is something very important about dark fairy taies. This is probably why I recently adopt horror story as therapetic entertainement (because I was gaslighting from Disney is hard to get away. )

yeah, I only watched three disney movies growing up: Dumbo, Goofy and Max and The treasure planet. All of which do have some more serious toines in them. I never watched any of the fairy tale ones. I konw most of the german fairy tales from books as I'm indeed german.

Sharing my personal experience - Pinocchio has always been my favourite Disney movie. I don't even know why I was so drawn to it as a child, but as an adult I rediscovered it and found a new love for it when I realised the depth of the serious subjects explored. Particularly the Pleasure Island part and the concept of the evil coachman collecting little boys and tricking them into slavery after they turn into literal donkeys, after which they never return home or see their parents again. As a child I was scared of the tavern scene where the coachman discusses his plans with Worthington Foulfellow and the Cat and at the moment when the coachman tells them that the kids "never come back as BOYS" and the screen fills up with his huge evil green devil eyes, and as the Fox and the Cat shudder in fear I used to hide under the table myself because I couldn't bear to look at him! And then there was the traumatising scene where Pinocchio and his friend turn into donkeys and his friend runs hysterically around the room, screaming and kicking. Now, remembering the strong reaction I had to these scenes back then, it has caused me to analyse my own psychological response and as a result to dive even deeper into the story. This has opened up my interest in the original story the movie was based on and thereby my knowledge has been enriched. Coincidentally the Italians recently made their own live action movie based on the original book and I can see on IMDB that a few more new live action Pinocchio movies are coming soon. I hope they will also be based on the original. Anyway, my rambling aside, my point was that Disney has actually brought light to a lot of classic folktales from the Middle Ages, that would have otherwise been long forgotten and only known to those interested enough to dig. But now a lot of people are rediscovering the original classics, thanks to the attention Disney has brought to them.

12:50 actually in the first Sleeping Beauty version by Perrault we don't have any assault, the assault is from a tale called Thalia Sun and Moon and it served as an inspiration for Perrault but the story is really different and Perrault's version is the one that introduced many of the iconic elements of the tale. And Disney's version seem to be based on the Grimm brothers version and on the Tchaïkovski ballet, the even stole the name Aurora from the ballet (that was in the public domain) and now you can't use the name Aurora for your adaptation even if it's based on the ballet.

Throughout my entire adolescence I had really unhealthy expectations for romantic relationships that were heavily influenced by the media I consumed as a child. Children are completely unable to distinguish between realism and fantasy in media, so when I was bombarded with loads and loads of stories about how true love is absolutely perfect and you never disagree and there's one soulmate out there waiting for you to treat you like a princess and a woman's ultimate dream and goal is to get married to a hot guy, it really strongly affected my implicit attitudes towards relationships once I was a teen and into early adulthood. It's taken me 10 years of dating to even begin to unlearn the insidious expectations for relationships that got solidified in my brain from consuming Disney media as a child.

Ive never understood the acceptance of Milton Freeman's stance. Companies are run by people and should therefore be held to the same standard as a citizen when it comes to moral obligations to society. While the general idea of the video is true, I have to mostly disagree with the targeted movies. I think it is important to point out that story transformation as time goes on is nothing new and fairytales becoming less grim and more wholesome is a quite common occurrence within European folktales (like Hansel and Grete). The old poem of Beowulf, one of the most important piece of English literature, is, in fact, a Christian retelling of the pagan story and many meanings of the original tale has been altered. Yet that does not change the artistic or historical value of the poem because without this alteration we would not know about Beowulf as the original did not survive. And the change of meaning of the story is not necessarily a bad thing. The world changes and so does our views and morals. Each culture has different values and what once was relevant in the 18th century Europe is not so relatable in present America. Many stories outside Disney have been adapted by various writers to reflect this change. I even think this point is somewhat mute as we, the viewers and readers, can interpret the story in our own unique ways. The writer does not hold any authority over how we interpret their work and sticking vigorously to one "true" interpretation is often not healthy for any kind of story. While Disney's motivation as a company to produce these movies might not be the most virtuous, it is not fair to dismiss the artistry and craft of extremely talented artists who worked on these movies. The fact that Disney renaissance era movies were cultural phenomena of its time cannot be stressed enough. These movies did not ruin culture, but in fact, they created a new (American) culture. But, and I might sound like a hypocrite, the points presented in the video is actually relevant to new Disney remakes, in my opinion. These movies are not a different interpretation of original Disney movies, rather just simple retelling of the same stories with different visuals (ie. Lion King). They do not provide any meaningful changes in the story and thus cheapen the originals as now there are basically two movies with exactly the same story. It is true that the remakes are nothing new in the movie industry, but most of the time they are inferior to its originals and it is no different with new Disney movies (so far). In that sense, Disney is quite literally ruining their own legacy and culture that they built throughout the decades.

I agree with a lot you said. Disney is an American company, that’s how it started anyway, so it makes sense how an American company offended China by retelling their famous poem Mulan. However, in the modern times we live in, Disney is slowly transcending outside of the US and trying their best (and failing) to please outside cultures, for example the 2020 Mulan Live action. Disney is no longer a US-centric company. I think the problem here is that most of the variation of tales was made organically, by the people, as they made tiny changes when they retold it, (re)produced it. They truly didn't have an economical interest, it was just something that happened spontaneously, bottom-up. Meanwhile, here, not only there's clearly a formula for profit which relies almost exclusively in what's pleasurable mostly forgetting what's right, it's absolutely a top-down approach that forces us to be mostly passive receivers (consumers) and never producers (specially considering their absurd copyright policies which don't even allow remix).

Then why take stories from other cultures and make them "american"? I find it wrong and rude. I grew up with the Grimm Brothers tale and H.C. Andersen tales. These were also animated. Didn't changed the stories much (tho they added 2 new character in "Simsala Grimm"). The Little Mermaid was my favorit one, my dad always had to read it, then I learned how to read and I was reading it to myself. The OG Frozen has nothing to do with the Disneys Frozen. Nothing. Why did they feel the need to say it's based on H.K. Andersen's Frozen? Just so they can use elements from the Danish culture (ex. traditional-ish cloths) without being called out? And let's not get into the whole Pocahontas story. You should not take a story about a 12 year old girl whos whole tribe is being colonized and who was taken by an adult man and make it a cute story about forbidden love. Also the whole Mulan thing. I loved the cartoon, to be honest. But from what I heard it does not follow the OG story. They had to make it about love too (tho, I am not complitly familiar with the original material, so I can't pronounce myself with this story). First, I applaud you for putting a long, dissenting opinion to a video on the site. It's going to be panned in some ways, agreed with in others, but kudos for you for speaking at length and fairly clearly. However, I disagree with you. It's one thing to tell your version of the story. Everyone does that to some extent, though usually on a smaller scale. Stories that people pick up with generally be the same story, just with that part or this part enhanced or shrunk, but with generally the same overall story. Playing down the harshness of Hansel and Gretel by having them escape, for example, rather than actually killing the witch, is one such thing, but it still shows them getting away and still has the same feeling of being in danger and all that. It keeps the morality intact, or, when it does change them, changes them to show a different morality that still is representative of a culture. Disney is not doing that. Disney is not trying to tell a lesson, but is instead trying to be 'comforting' while also being profitable. It is not an adaptation or a retelling, but rather taking a framework and ripping out the points that the author was trying to make while making it profitable and palatable for a much bigger, higher-paying audience. It'd be like, for example, someone decided to take the Lord of the Rings, remove various deaths, make the Nazgul ridiculous caricatures of themselves with villain songs and all, get rid of the messages re: addiction with the rings, and more, and then re-sell that about 50 years from now. It wouldn't be a retelling, then, it'd be a cash grab, and it would also be a grab for the copyright that keeps other people from retelling it in the same way. That's one of the biggest problems. Once Disney buys this up and uses it, other people CAN'T change it; disney's version is the official version for the next century.

However, I think Wisecrack's video does a poor job communicating the legitimate point you've mentioned. At least to me, the video seems to be pointing out that Disney adaptations are bad because they "dare" to change the original material and make it appeal more to a modern, family-friendly audience. I think this undercuts more serious problems with Disney films. Personally, I don't think the problem with "comforting" Disney films is because they're more "cutesy" or child friendly. The insidious "comfort" of Disney films is not in how they "censor" old stories. I think there's a lot more danger in how these movies try to make stories comfortable by relying on nostalgic IP, not taking risks on new stories, etc. I also believe every movie is going to compromise the story/artistic vision of a film to make it more profitable. Pretty much all movies do this to some extent, even non-Disney ones.

Disney is notorious in numerous ways, such as the political content of their childrens cartoons amounting effectively to brainwashing - but yes, the proliferation of juvenile cultural norms such as evilcute, capeshit, and indeed Star Wars itsself into adult spaces is quite disturbing. I have close friends in their 30s and 40s who regularly watch Disney cartoons and other juvenalia, it's really bloody weird. Perhaps it's a generational thing.

If Disney insists on painting over the rough edges, filmmakers might rebel just as hard again.

Disney can pay off people with funds that will set up their families for generations. Opportunities that seemingly MUST be taken. Yet it will be little more than pocket change to the monopoly. What you are hoping for would require a moral fortitude, dedication of craft and loyalty to truth. Traits not found in those willing to climb the ladder to the rungs of Hollywood, or even to a level at which your existence would be acknowledged by the Disney empire let alone high enough to challenge them. Even in the infinitesimal chance that such a person reached that point with their morality intact or untarnished. It would also require the media to also take a moral stance and not be bribed into silence, and from the general populace to stand with the creator, to support this fantastical person's career and refuse to support Disney. Unfortunately that will NEVER happen. A savoir may come, many may flock to them. But ultimately they will be drowned under they tide of lawsuits, misinformation, bullying, and the frothing foaming legions of fans that would rather die than see their beloved empire of joy be criticized. Let alone divided or dismantled. "money talks, merit walks."

I’m deeply concerned about the direction things are going. And I’m even more concerned, as a capitalist, about Disney’s acquisition of competition. In plain English, to me, this means a bunch of people working together diligently to undermine or change what societal norms are accepted through capital resource, not out of necessity but rather what they envision as a course for society and how their entity attributes to it. I could formulate entire theories about stuff like this, but i won't.
