The Monkey's been around since the 60's, so you know it's been a much-loved bike everywhere it's sold. I can't tell if Honda originally meant for it to be a farm bike or a scooter, but the modern one can do pretty much anything you want, as long as you don't want to do it on a racetrack.

I can't help but feel that part of the thing that puts people off taking up riding, is the fact that you have to pay a large lump sum, and take several days off to do a Direct Access. Compare that to learning to drive where you may have one or two hours of lessons a week, spreading the cost over several months and fitting in lessons after work or college. If riding schools offered the same, the anyone starting out could get on the road cheaply by doing a CBT and riding a cheap secondhand 125cc, spreading their lessons, and their cost out over the three or four months before the CBT runs out. And I'm pretty certain it'd make for safer riders too, as they could practice what they've learnt on their own 125cc between lessons.

For me it's the CB125F. Going in and out of the city is far cheaper than paying for the bus/train. This is when taking my monthly finance payment, insurance, servicing and fuel into account. Additionally, it's faster than public transport and gets me closer to target destinations, gives me more freedom to choose where I want to travel and when. Some people might say the only downside is safety, but realistically public transport isn't that safe these days either. For me it's a no-brainer.

I own a Monkey since 2022. This bike is a remarkable product. Fit, finishing and quality of materials are superb. Fuel consumption is ridiculous. I do 100 km with 1,6/1,7 liters of gasoline. Engine and levers are very smooth. It is comfortable and very, very nimble. It looks great with its retro scrambler style. It reminds me the Suzuki Van Van, another fantastic product. Is the Monkey very expensive?: you have to pay for a quality bike like this. And maintenace costs are very low. Insurance costs me 90€ per year in my country (Spain). This cozy bike is a gem!!!

One of the best motorcycles ever built for shear joy - fact ! I’m 6ft 2, 22 stone, and I’ve had 70+ mph out of mine many times, including on the TT course in the Isle of Man. I'm off-loading my car later this year. I'll almost certainly replace it with a mid-sized scooter. Driving a car has become insanely expensive now, especially if you include parking fees. With delivery vans able to drop-off bigger items, I just don't need the expense. I'm going to save a minimum of £4,000 per year, so the scoot will pay for itself well inside 2 years. If I need a car for a particular road trip - I'll rent something for a few days.

Hi - it’s Big Rodders in Ireland. I’m 6’4” and bought a 4 speed yellow Monkey new in 2020. It is expensive (Benelli TNT is £1500 cheaper) and the new GB350 would be better value. I got it because it was the only option for me to be comfortable on and for it to fit in my van. I’ve done 14500 miles and average 153mph. It’s realistic cruising speed is 50mph, otherwise buy a bigger bike. The rear suspension is far too soft that bottoms out easily so an upgrade is vital. It’s a keeper for me and I frequently do 150 miles day trips. I also ran a CB125F last year for 5000 miles and averaged 145mpg, again at a 50mph cruising speed.
@rodneysweetnam865314 күн бұрын

Been toying with the ide of getting a 125cc honda and the same weeks my favorite channel dose a video about the one Im leaning towards ^^ I will take it as a sign for sure :D But sucks to hear the UKs licens system is also screwd. Here in Sweden its really expensive and if you have no prior experience form like dirtbikes or know someone to test drive with a lot you often pay over 2500 dollars... in total to get the damn licence and some parts of the test are made in such a way that you can only make it on certain kindes of bikes and that force you to rent or borrow a bike for the test as like a cruiser or and older bike wont work. I think that if you have a licence for a car you should be able to ride a 125cc bike after just taking a short safty test after driving a car for lets say 2 years. That way the test for the bigger bikes becomes easier and we can get less trafic on the roads and have fun at the same time.

Great video lads, sad to hear how bad the bike licensing system is in the UK. That said, the lack up uptake by the younger generation is the same here in NZ, in my opinion I believe it is because they are more risk adverse. Some of my happiest biking memories were on my Suzuki FXR150 when I was 17, hopefully younger people will come onboard again with regards to bikes (that said, our ACC system in NZ makes the cost of licensing/taxing a bike rather costly).

Having recently gone through my CBT, 125cc purchase, DAS, 125cc sale, 650cc purchase and so on, the costs outside the bikes themselves is insane. I could barely get insured for a reasonable cost, even in my late 30s with a long safe driving record. All the insurers cited theft as the main reason. I paid £2k/year on my 125cc fully comp. For my 650cc I couldn't even get a fully comp quote. Third-party was EXTORTIONATE. I feel sad for young people struggling to get into motorcycling. Something needs to be done about insurance and theft. Nevermind the almost monopoly situation of basically every UK bike insurer being a brokerage front for BikeSure. There's zero price competition.

Or there is also the Benelli TNT for £2600ish ? My introduction to bikes was via the MZ 125TS. The adverts in 1983 mentioned the running costs as 1 or 2 p/mile. Even as a first year trainee it only cost me 6 weeks pay to buy a brand new one. It was the way to go for me rather than borrow 6 months pay at 25%+ interest for a 2nd hand bike like all my mates did. Finally, I would love Honda to offer the option of that gearbox/gearchange on the Cub and CT125 rather than the clutchless version.

I have Clyde my Monkey bike for 3 years and use it for going to the shops and small trips instead of driving my car. I love it. My daughter has just done her CBT and she used it until she got a bike of her own, she really liked it, she now has a Kawasaki Z125 as she is 22 and is going to wait until 24 to do her test so she that she can do her direct access.
@isaacb85249 күн бұрын
Not enough people know that you don’t need to pay silly money to get your a1 125 license. Just do CBT, look up the mod 1 test and practise in a car park. No need to go through an instructor. You can do your test on your own 125. Costs less than £130 for theory, mod 1 and mod 2
@MrDarcy-OlMan9 күн бұрын
There’s no point in getting the A1 license though, because you then have to do the A2 (at 19), and A at 21. So most people don’t bother with any of that and don’t ride at all till they are 24 or older and do a direct access.
@isaacb85249 күн бұрын
@ plenty of people stay riding 125s for years as they are so much cheaper to run than bigger bikes. Most people just keep their L plates but you can take them off for the price of a couple CBTs. Perfect for quick trips into town and I’m 70kg and my grom will do 60mph on flat which most of the time is enough on some back roads and like you said handling is good because it’s so small. And even though you’re going flat out pretty much all the time I’m still getting 150+mpg. Perfect for motorcycling on a budget or if space is limited (like me, I have to keep Grom for now as I have to pick it up with the handlebars turned to get it to just about fit into the back garden lol)

Oh hey, that's Oakham, stayed in a hotel there with some friends (with one visiting from the states), lovely neck of the woods. Funnily enough I was talking to my brother a couple of days ago about doing a ride out some time that way towards Rutland water. But that's a great fuel efficiently flex, though sacrificing speed, but if you're not having to go on fast roads, it's a pretty respectable way to ride economically. I ride an NC750X so I was already flexing fuel efficiency. But both the Monkey and the Grom just seem like fun little 125's to throw around.

I use an old 2009 Yamaha Cygnus X 125 scooter as a run around when its wet and horrible out, easily hits 60 on a flat road, loads of underseat storage with the petrol tank being at the front, storage box on the back and even enough room for a bag on the floor for short journeys, £5 in the tank and it does just over 100 miles.

Check out the cb125f, Tommy two wheels hits around 60-65 and he said he was around 20stone. I'm only 8.5/9 stone. Seriously considering one.

@@rossclarke8028 If you're being honest with yourself about what you actually want out of a bike then im sure the CB125 is a decent run around, i see hundreds of them about. The monkeys at least have character visually and i suppose riding a bike of that size is pretty different from other 125's too. I think the CB125 is a bike that you start up, point it where you wanna go and then get off without looking back if you know what im saying.

I have a Dax Chonda clone, owed almost 20 years, will never sell it, cost me £130 a year to run, tax insurance and Mot. Replaced engine last year £180 complete engine delivered 2 Bolts and 5 wire plugs , cheaper to replace than repair, it still ran, but I did not change oil for 12 years to deliberately kill the engine, it did not die kept going, only replaced due to vibration.

the only argument against the Monkey is it's plastic cousin, the Grom and it's kind of out-doors-y second cousin the CT-125 trail... all use the same engine and cost a bit less or roughly the same with the Trail having a semi-auto gear-box that doesn't require you to use a clutch so is technically easier to ride.
@CrustyBiker14 күн бұрын
Don't forget the dax, the CT125 isn't available in the UK although a few have made it in via imports, that is no longer possible for the time being!, the grom is cheaper because plastic is cheaper than chrome plated metal and it has one shock rather than 2, the bulbs are standard incandescent whereas monkey has LED (in EU and UK) monkey has ABS up front, not sure if any Groms do!? I think the difference is about £300 OTR price which if those differences are true and you need them and you will be eternally happier to get the choice you want!, then its worth it 💁♂️😅

Fun little things, but too stealable. "If you got stuck, just pick it up". Yeah. Like if you got stuck wanting money for a drug fix just pick up someone else's :^( Better off getting a boring cheap scooter that isn't as desirable (though those still get stolen some for yoofs to commit crime on). I used to commute to London on a 250cc scooter and, yes, it was cheaper than the train/tube season ticket and got me there quicker and more reliably.

I've always wondered if these are a good idea for kids on a farm track, because of that exhaust hanging down underneath. Doesn't that get hung up on stuff?

My last bike was a cb1300x4 with £400 fully comp insurance. On the comparison sites they are looking to grip me for £1800 for a Monkey. (no points, bans or any convictions I just have zero no claims).

Prefer the look of the Dax, likely similar comfort and performance, but a used late model RE is a viable option if the added weight is not a limitation.
