I take slight exception that the old Suzuki is less reliable. Sure it will need a top end rebuild once in a while, carbs need jetting to keep running crisp, and perhaps renew the plugs much more frequently…but the old 2-stroke Suzukis were super dependable.

One more difference between motorcycles now and then: The Suzuki, like all bikes then, has a center stand as well as a side stand while the Yamaha, like all bikes now, only has a sidestand. We all know that chain maintenance sucks, without a center stand it really sucks, so why do modern motorcycles have more chains than ever, but no center stands? And of course the Suzuki looks exactly like my first motorcycle, a Suzuki GT250, while the Yamaha looks like something I would stomp on, if I found it on my bathroom floor.

I’ve been riding for 62 years and bought new bikes since 1976, the most recent being two years ago. I think that in styling terms, modern naked bikes are ugly and engines tend to look like the innards of a washing machine. The lack of mudguarding is stupid, the first things I do on modern machines is fit fender extenders and huggers. Also, the kicked-up back-ends make no sense to me and the restricted movement on seats is often uncomfortable on the long-distance rides I tend to do. Been there, done it, warts and all. I’m now riding a Triumph Speed Twin 900, even that needed a fender extender. However, it is traditionally comfortable, at home and abroad. Good compromise between modern and commonsense.

Think you are incorrect about the reliability. A properly sorthed classic bike is every bit as reliable. You can quite easily add electronic ignition and other parts to make the electrics much better then the original bikes. Servicing cost are much cheeper as its pretty easy to do it yourself.

An interesting comparison video. Most of the styling changes over the years is market led. Market demand is obsessed with bikes being lighter and cheaper. Manufacturers respond by changing metal component for cheaper, lighter plastic ones and highly finished chrome exhausts for poorly finished Matt black ones. If we refused to buy them they wouldn’t make them, (some of us do, that why Royal Enfield have done so well).

Would Love something like a 95 Magna! I know this, it definitely won’t have any riding modes and a bunch of but spanking ugly plastic on it. Got my motorcycle endorsement in 1973 and just the difference between early 70’s to mid 80’s show quite a bit of improvement in that time period. The 80’s bikes had improved ignition systems, brakes and handling made a big difference. Today’s bikes with fuel injection and computers improve performance and gas mileage but like the “soul” of the older bikes.

When I was a lad the Suzuki GT range looked quite ordinary, but now they look like classics not least because of their simplicity. Darcy said it was the work of artists and whilst I don’t know who comprised the Suzuki Design Office at the time, it looks to me that practical Engineers still ruled the roost. By contrast, it looks like a lot more holistic design has gone into the aesthetics of virtually every part of the MT125 to create the “insect” look that they desired. It’s not my favourite look but some insect bikes don’t look too bad 🇬🇧

My bike of preference now is an ‘06 Tiger 955i. All the engine I want (plus some more ) and sublime build quality from the analogue era. My gen 3 KLR is for sale- but if Honda or Triumph would make a similarly simple bike to a decent standard of fit and finish- I would invest.

I havent ridden that many different ones, but it doesn't matter to me what i ride, coz i just love riding them, but given a choice i'd go for a modern one evertime, coz i don't have any nostalgia for old models, and reliability is a priority, so i chose honda's, and have a 125 & 750, however of the two examples here, i'd go for the older one, as i just wouldnt ride a bike with coloured wheels - too 'playstation generation' for me, and when i called into a dealer with the wife to look at a bike that had 'em, she told me to 'grow up' and 'act my age' when i straddled one lol, but hey, each to her own, i won't judge !!- thanks for the vid.

In part, I feel the young of today have no 'peers' to follow. As a boy, I & many like me, wanted what our fathers & uncles rode, or at least the ones they too lusted after. A late '60s 650 Bonneville was the King, this snarling granny frightener was not for the inexperienced. General view was you needed to learn on Bantams or Cubs & pass your half-hour test, then onto a 350 until you got more used to the weight, a couple of 500s over a couple of summers & you were ready to try the King . . . But no one in their right mind would let a 19yr old madhead like you anywhere near one - 'Too big for you, you'll never pick it up, come back when you're bigger', etc. Those Bonnies were roughly the same size, weight & power output of today's RE 650 Interceptors . . . & that's NOW seen as a nice A2 compatible learning tool for relative 'newbies' . . . Different days man. : )

The original bikes were made to do a job, eg proper front mudguards, lower rear end providing more cover from grime etc. The new ones now are a design exercise probably designed by folk who don’t even ride. Yes the modern brakes, suspension and in some cases engine are improved but the overall general machines are not as good. Just look how many riders have fender extenders fitted to keep the crud down. The manufacturers should look at that. Only Enfield and BSA seem to realise this, keeping them from the traditional models. At 65 I think I probably had the best years of motorcycle riding. Those old disc and drum brake combos were scary but made you a better rider as you had to think far more ahead.

I think they need to do away the the cc restriction for learner bikes and have it based on power alone. A mildly restricted RE Classic 350 is much better value than the over priced 125 offerings, and once derestricted after you pass your test it would be a great bike for a few years... or even for good. Far better than buying a 125 and then another bike straight away. Also passing an A1 or A2 test should allow you to ride the class up with L plates. That alone would make the licensing much more affordable as you wouldn't have to hire a bike for the test or pay by the hour to practice.

Nice video! I'm a bit torn. No contest in looks for me as I'm a big fan of classic bikes. Also a fan of classic bike build quality. I think we sometimes gloss over just how poorly some very modern bikes are made compared to the older ones. My Dad has two (modern classic) bikes in the garage from the same manufacturer. One is from the earlier 2000's, the other a 2018. The 2018 looks like it's been dragged through a salty swamp, the older one looks immaculate. I've had a number of Harleys over the years, currently a 23 Heritage, and whilst I love the bikes, the finish quality just doesn't compare. I had a 94 and a '04, which I'd literally leave out in the snow, and a quick hose down and it was gleaming. My '23 hasn't held up anywhere near as good despite being almost new! However! As sacrilegious as it might be to say, I do think we get some very useful technology as a tradeoff. I think I'd struggle to ride a big-twin Harley without ABS these days. It's saved me a few times and yes you have to factor it into how you ride but it's nice knowing that on a heavy bike on greasy roads, you've at least got some level of protection against the wheels locking up.

It's not just the aesthetics of retro vs modern, today's engines are significantly more efficient, quieter due to new designs, exhausts and emissions etc. Nobody wants bruised legs thanks to kick starters, the mucking around with 2 stroke oil measuring etc. New bikers just want to press start, add petrol and go. Plus older bikes didn't have a petrol gauge. You looked inside and swoshed the bike back and forth to hear how much it had. When I was young, I wanted a bike to look like Wayne Rainey, or Rocket Ron Haslam etc. However, now as I'm in my 50's, Retro and cafe racers have become more attractive to me. Triumph's new Bobber or Thruxton look amazing. BMW's R12, R18 and the new R20 concept look amazing too. So bike manufacturers are making bikes that look like they're bigger than they are. People want a MT07, MT09 or 10. So the best they can buy is the 125cc equivalent

I like like to ride my 1995 cbr 900 rr , the clutch is heavy , the brakes are a lot more than 2 fingers , the gearbox is clunky and you feel the engine fibrating That's what's riding all about . Feeling alive

First bike was a 250cc Suzuki X7 that I rode on L plates before doing my test (twice round the block, with the examiner stepping out in front of me on one lap to show I could do an emergency stop). Much prefer the old school look of bikes. Can't be doing with all the plastic and angles of modern bikes.

Check out the new Kawasaki W230, gorgeous bike, pity they can't make a 500 cc version ! I'd nearly sell the Deauville to buy one, it's got class and character and I love the analogue clocks, this is something Royal Enfield just can't get right !

I don't like tiny mudguards. I prefer parts that are both beautiful and fully functional. Like the mudguard on the Royal Enfield Classic 350.

the old Suzuki looks designed- the new bike looks thrown together with any old bits- no cohesion.

Sorry, new style bike... not for me. I'll keep my Interceptor 650. New bike reliability with old school looks.

Did anybody ever covet something made of plastic? There is zero charm in that new bike, nothing to polish, no patina to be acquired it's a creased blob of nothingness. The old bike you've no choice but to look after it, it's metal front to bike, oodles of charm & a bike an owner would bond with. No wonder RE are selling well...

Looking at these two bikes I clearly see an evolutionary pattern. But I really hope we don't evolve into transformers

The Suzuki is much easier to modify and you could probably get close to 35HP without decreasing reliability.

Maybe you should have compared the Suzuki to a Yamaha XSR 125 instead. Makes more sense as far as style.

The old 2 strokes sound lovely with the original exhausts, I think the sound was spoiled by the expansion chambers people used to put on. Those little four strokes sound terrible and even worse with noisy pipes.

I have been riding over 40 years and still addicted but I really don’t like modern bikes. Older bikes are beautiful and a joy to ride. Modern bikes for me are reliable, refined and a bit boring. Proper Japanese bikes of old were reliable, the roads don’t allow a spirited riding session anymore so no thrashing to within an inch of going pop. Ooooooh my X7 days I dearly miss.
