@@Warhamer116 A "good DM" as you put it doesn't always need to bend to the whim of the players. While I will admit your example was very explanatory of your point and brought up a creative way to avoid a TPK... You also created a bit of a strawman and on top of that rewarded players for reckless play instead of clever well thought out RP/Combat decisions. Also a good frame of reference for any balanced CL appropriate encounter is never having any single creature the party faces +2 CL above the average individual party member level. Ala a Level 3 party should never face a creature CL 6 and above and expect to win. At least not without a damn good plan or magic items to level the playing field (especially in older versions of D&D). Back to your example... Instead of outright rewarding players with showing all of the enemies are illusions. Perhaps have some of them be actual creatures of around proper CL to aid the gnome wizard simply hidden behind the vail of an advanced version of disguise self. (Because it's hard to make an individual creature a challenging fight for the players unless it's CL is in the unfair territories or it has a ton of environmental or legendary actions) On the topic of PC failure as well. It doesn't always need to end in a TPK, instead it could be a knock out and well transition the story from there. Hell even death doesn't need to be the end. Have the players go on a astral plane quest in their spiritual bodies trying to find a way to return to life and complete the main quest! There should be reward for smart play, and at least some punishment for less than acceptable levels of foolishness. The best way to find out what is the best middle ground to set for failure and misplays is to... Talk with the party.
@Warhamer1162 ай бұрын
@@recap1843 A good DM is able to influence the decisions of the players, but not make them for them, and then adapt to the consequences that naturally result from the actions taken by the players in influencing the story. You can have a lot of leeway in doing that, specifically if the DM writes the antagonist of the story to behave somewhat intelligently as it gives DM a lot of space to move the story beats around 'as a consequences of player actions' A DM doesn't play against the players, and doesn't 'bend' to the whims of the players, it's not 'party vs DM'. You can call it reckless behavior, some other might call the group to make a perception check when facing the swarm of dragons, and if someone gets a success, mention that the dragons are acting normally/unusually relaxed/inanimate (depending on dice results), giving players a clue that something is afoot. The barbar doing barbar things while shouting bar is a bit on the nose, but also in character if the rest of the party can't wrangle the murderhobo back in line- Which is the group's job, not the DM's. The DM just rolls with the punches and figures how the world would react to barbarian's decision to hit a fountain at the middle of the city with an ax, and it's up to the party to figure out how to get out of the mess. DM's role is to be the storyteller, and while that does require the DM to roll the dice for the antagonists, ultimately it's the players who make the story that the DM tells to them.
