Have you considered doing a Harry Potter Study? What is your teaching style? Do you think one of these will work better for you? Was this video helpful in deciding which curriculum you want to use?

We used Waldock's Wizards and Wands a couple years ago and absolutely loved it.

Thank you for such a great peek inside and comparison of these HP curriculums. It’s always so nice to be able to see inside and get a better idea of what would work for our home.

This is so awesome of you... I am not familiar with What is Magic. A lot of family I know use all the Harry Potter from the Build Your Library in a whole year.

We are definitely using all the studies from Build Your Library as well! We're going to spread it over 2 years though because I want to use pieces from all 3 curriculum and I need more time for everything:)

Wow! I am just blown away that this exists!! I would have loved this growing up! I am already considering how What Is Magic could fit in with our curriculum for the middle years. The time commitment is definitely the problem, but in a few years it may be possible? I can pretend anyway. Haha! Thank you for making this video, it was very informative, especially since I’d never heard of any of these. Since we have a classical secular homeschool, we tend to focus on academics rather than fun. And honestly, it would be really nice to have a fun supplement during the middle years. :) Thank you so much!!

I bought the BYL unit study for book one years ago with good intentions. Unfortunately we never did the unit, but these do look wonderful. I know a few Potterhead kiddos who would love these!

For the Waldock's Way unit. I found that the text "A Natural History of Magick" that was in the book list goes through the ancient worlds and highlights Egypt, Greek, Roman, and moving into the modern era of Magic. I think that is why she added the study book for history. The only thing I didn't find was vikings and mideval, but I think those were added because of Hogwarts being in a magical castle and vikings because in the books it is mentioned about Runes studies (Herminone takes that class in book 5) she added the culture that wrote the Runic alphabet. Anyway those were my thoughts, I might be off base, but that is what I found after I purchased that unit for this year. Thank you for the review, I hadn't heard of the other two series and I am excited to look into the project based learning, since that is how my child seems to learn best.

I have compared all three too. I first bought WWW. But I felt like it was too much “stuff” and not enough actual plans and it didn’t flow very well. I then looked at What is Magic and it was way overwhelming. And I also couldn’t find when other books were going to be released. So I finally bought BYL and I actually really liked it! I’ll be doing BYL and just adding in some of the “stuff” from WWW.

It sounds like you did a lot of work to figure out what will work best for you, kudos! I hope you and your kids have a great time with it and learn a lot. What an exciting and fun school year it will be!

This is just what I needed! I plan to read the first (illustrated) book to my kids this summer. Do you think with the BYL study you could swap out the herbology book for something else easily enough?
@WhimsicalFamilyLife2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean the book itself or all of the herbology study? You can switch out anything you like, but it wouldn't have the schedule laid out for you. One thing I liked about the studies was that it got me thinking in a new way and left me open to considering possibilities I hadn't seen before.

Hello ! I just found your channel and it's so helpful ! This is our first year homeschooling..we're excited ! :) I'm wondering if these books would work for an 8th grader ? I've had a hard time finding curriculum for her that's secular and enjoyable.
@WhimsicalFamilyLife2 жыл бұрын
Congrats on making the leap to homeschooling! I would say they are perfect for an 8th grader! Both Build Your Library and What is Magic have focused on middle graders in a big way. Good Luck!

Hi there! Which one would you say would be most suitable for a 13-14 year old? I’m assuming the Waldocks one is too juvenile, but which of the other two do you think is best?
@WhimsicalFamilyLife2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the amount & type of activities/projects you want to do. Build Your Library has cool projects that carry through all the books (love that!) and she adds new ones for each book. What is Magic? tends to have more builds/sewing/science type of projects. I think they are both good for 13-14 year old. Note - What is Magic is for the 1st book only and they have not released anymore yet. Build Your Library has a unit study for all 7 books. Hope that helps!

Mr Wesley works in muggle artifacts and one of the classes they take in upper years at Hogwarts is muggle studies which is learing about muggle world history.
