You are very welcome and you sure picked a winner! My favorite Singer ZigZag machine. I like them so much I made a 26 video playlist about the 403A "Regina" (the Queen of ZZ Machines) kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg I include cleaning and adjusting the machine when needed and so forth so you may be interested. You can also download a FREE copy of the original Singer Instruction Manual directly from Singer at this link www.singer.com/search/support?title=403a The manual is in PDF format for Adobe Reader and has 100 pages all about the machine and how to use it and the attachments. I'm really happy for you and hope you love it. Please come back and visit my channel when you can.

Have one of each, love them both. One was my mom-in-law's, which I learned to sew on; the other she posthumously helped my husband find for me in a thrift shop, as hers had been worked pretty hard and was growing sluggish despite cleaning and lubing/oiling. They are total workhorses.

Great comparison video, Andy! I like my 503’s fancy shape but I do prefer the old bobbin winder and presser foot pressure control. I am glad I’ve got extras of the bobbin springs!

Thank you Daffycat, and good on you for having the springs! If (when) one fails you are good to go. I think the Rocketeers appealed to people after the decades of more "Industrial" style of machines and appliances. They were so futuristic at the time that they became an instant hit. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks so much. My mom had this sewing machine this and the 500 rocketeer. I love them. Watching your video. I ordered one 403A from eBay Friday, got here this morning. Fast, across country during this epidemic. I am making mask. I am so thrilled to have this again. Power, strong, stable. You made it easy to understand. I cleaned it all lubed and oiled today. And runs and sounds like a dream! Like going from a trike with the newer machines ( throw away) to a Lamborghini! Wow! Love love love it. I love your videos. Making masks. I appreciate all you teach us. Makes a huge difference when we can work on our own machines. Needed power to go over mask pleats. Have two newer machines here. Wow, this here FLYS! All metal gears and parts. They sure knew how to make them back then. Mine is a year older than I am lol. Oldies but goodies. Thx again. Keep the videos coming. Love them!

I’m looking at both machines in Market place. I’m wondering which one you like the best? I’m thinking the 403A, am I right?
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 Ай бұрын
Yes, the 403A. I prefer the industrial styling over the "Rocketeer" look. The 503A bobbin winder tends to break but the springs can be replaced when it happens. The 403 bobbin winder will never break. They have the same mechanics other than the little thread puller by the take-up lever on the 503 which Singer never used after the Rocketeer models. Can't go wrong with either machine but the 403A will last longer and is easier to maintain, IMO.

It's a nice model for home sewing. It is versatile and built strongly. It is not as powerful as a 403A, but can do most normal sewing including hem jeans. It is fairly easy to maintain and used parts are readily available b/c they made many of them. You can usually find them (USA) for a very reasonable price, too. Good Luck, and happy sewing.

Just found one just like yours. I don’t know how to sew. Video was very helpful in learning what the gadgets are for. It’s not simple for me because I’ve never used a machine. When showing types of stitches, you stop, turn wheel on right and do something with a lever. Close to needle! Can you do a slower video and explain for those of us dudes that want to learn how to sew. Asking for a friend😅
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 8 ай бұрын
Not making videos now due to health reasons, but I can give basic info. Call the wheel the handwheel, and always turn it towards you. The lever behind the needle is the "Presser Bar Lifter". You use it to raise and lower the "Presser Foot" from or onto the fabric. It pushes down the fabric against the "Feed Dog", the thing with little teeth just under the "Needle Plate" that the fabric rests on. The Feed Dog pulls the fabric in sync with the needle; so when the needle is in the fabric the dog stops pulling and when the needle is up out of the fabric the dog moves the fabric the length of the stitch you set. The Presser Bar has a thumb nut on top or a dial to adjust how much pressure. You want enough to move the fabric but not crush it into the dog. The Presser Bar Lifter has other important functions. When it is lifted it also reduces the tension on the needle thread. Now when I moved the handwheel it was to manually raise the needle up out of the thread and when I lifted that lever it was so I could pull my fabric from under the presser foot. See? No needle in the fabric, no tension on the thread, and no pressure holding down the fabric. The presser bar/foot must be up when you thread the machine. That allows the the thread to go between the presser discs that apply tension to the needle thread; no tension no good stitching. I suggest you download a FREE copy of the Instruction Manual for your model (you did not say which one of the two) from the Singer Support Page here: www.singer.com/support Just enter the model number into the search box and it will bring up a page showing available manuals. They download as a PDF and are nicely done with good info about your machine, using it, and standard maintenance. There are many good videos for basic sewing on YT: kzbin.info?search_query=how+to+basic+sew If you want a deeper dive into the machine itself I have 27 videos for Regina, my 403A: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg and 21 videos for Vicky, my 503A: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKJZaZn2zl3LsnV2d7UhrqvX My wife has been sewing for 60 years, but I'm just a mechanic of the machines, and doing a demo seam in the videos is the extent of my sewing expertise 😃 Whether a 403A or 503A you certainly picked a fabulous model. Happy for your friend 👀 Thanks for watching my channel, and good luck.

Just to clarify, it is just model 404, not 404A. The "A" in 403A and 401A signify they were made in SIngers new factory in Anderson, SC. The 404 model was made at an older factory in Elizabeth, NJ. 403A & 404 have the same motor, bottom shafts & gears, Hook system, Tension Assembly, and most other parts. Model 404 is considered a Heavy Duty Straight Stitch only model that can only sew with one needle, It has some heavier bushings/shafts. Model 403A adds a Pattern Selector System that allows you to "snap on" plastic Pattern Discs or Cams one at a time inside the lift-up door on the arm cover. It has one follower that follows the edge of the disc and moves a Needle Bar Driving Arm to make the needle bar (and needle) swing back and forth as the pattern dictates. That is also called ZigZag Sewing. It can sew with two needles or one in straight stitch or ZZ, forward and reverse. Model 503A is the next version of the 403A with mostly the same mechanics but a "Rocketeer" body shape and a larger flip-up arm cover with a bobbin winder system on the top instead of the front. Model 500A was the "top" version or most expensive. It is the same as the 401A except for the above-mentioned "Rocketeer" features. Models 401A & 500A have an additional Follower, so one on each side of a Metal Cam Stack System of 7 Steel Pattern Discs. Additionally, the same plastic pattern discs can be snapped on the top of the cam stack one at a time. The disc selection is controlled by knobs on the front of the machine as well as levers. With more discs and two followers, the 401A/500A models can sew many more patterns than the 403A or 503A models as well as sewing "Dual Disc" or Dual Pattern" stitches. Which came first? Model 301/301A was the first "Slant Needle" model, then came the 400s and then the 500s. Here is an excellent website about those models, it is mostly concerning the 301, but you will find info about the 400s and 500s, and going by the serial number on the bottom of the machine you can see the year it was made. www.singer301.com/dating/default.html If you are bored someday you can watch an almost 3-hour video I made comparing the 401A, 403A, and 404 models and my opinion of them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJbIaoOXq92KntU You may also be interested in having copies of the original Instruction Manuals in PDF downloadable format FREE from the Singer Support Page here: www.singer.com/support Just enter the model number in the "Enter Model Number" search box. The manuals are very nicely done and contain an incredible amount of info about using the machine including oiling and the accessories like presser feet and others. You may also find free instruction manuals from the Sewing Dude here: sewingdude.wordpress.com/category/free-manuals/ The nice thing about that page is he gives away the Service Manuals for the models you mention. Thank you for fixing your other machine and for the kind words about my channel. Good Luck and take care.

Congratulations on finding a Singer 503A Rocketeer sewing machine. Starting with the Bobbin Winder it is common for a spring to be broken but you can replace it. Here is a playlist of videos for Model 503A and the first two are all about the bobbin winding system: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKJZaZn2zl3LsnV2d7UhrqvX About the Needle Plate; there is a lifting system for the needle plate to raise, lower and remove the plate. It very often needs cleaning and slight adjustment. Singer model 403A has 90% of the same parts as the 503A model, including the needle plate bracket and I have a video for working on it, kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGKvhIBjd7-qb80 In fact, if your 503a needs other work and you can't find a video for it in the 503A list, please look at the 403A list as I may have a video there. Here is the 403A list: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg Model 503A is a very versatile and strong machine with many features. If yours did not come with an Instruction Manual you can download one for free from the Singer Support page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=503 Thanks for watching my channel, and good luck.

Well, there are many types of leather. Leather for clothing certainly. Leather for light to medium purses; OK. Bridle leather or thick rawhide; nope. Using a leather needle and walking foot (even feed foot) really helps a lot. On page 5 of the Singer Instruction Manual is a chart showing the types of fabric and needle size and thread to use with the model. I grew up using the 503 Rocketeer. My moms machine had 2 beautiful eye shaped knobs to do different decoratice stitches per each of the 4 or 5 disks or cams that came with the machine. I think it did 30 different stitches. Over all beautiful looking ,sleak , wing or finn shaped design. Oh it ran smooth just had to turn wheel forward in the down position to start and it had a wonderful bizzzzz humming sound when it sewed. Thanks for posting.

What a great memory. Nice of you to share. My Mom had a 1940's Singer and I loved watching her use the buttonhole attachment. Years later her sister bought a Rocketeer. Mom said the idea of sewing on it kind of scared her; like "looks like it could take off and start flying around the room" but she said she could listen to the bzzzzzz all day long.

I definitely prefer the 403, because it is strictly functional (but still a nice looking machine.) The 503 looks very cool, it is probably the coolest sewing machine I've ever seen, but it sacrificed function for form in order to accommodate the funky design.

Hi Andy - your videos are by far the best! So helpful - thank you. I am in the market for a 403A, 401A or 503A. I almost got a 401A with case and accessories on Craigslist for $100, but the seller was really giving me a hard time when I asked if I could test it out with a piece of fabric. Instead she sent me a 1inch by 1 inch video of the needle going up and down- seemed fishy to me :-) By the way, would you happen to know what would cause a machine to run slow, but then speed up when you pressed on the plate area above the bobbin (in a 403A)?
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
I've bought a lot of machines off of Craigslist, you you do need to be careful. Needle movement does not reflect a "working machine" only a working needle. The bobbin case may be missing, a belt broken underneath, the feed dog lost, etc. If they won't let me try I don't stop by is my motto. Don't know why that is happening on your 403a; The first test I'd make is removing the bobbin and bobbin case and trying the speed. On a model like the 403A, the most common cause of slow speeds is a worn, out of adjustment foot controller. That controls the speed of the motor after all. kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKL6ePPxLpmnWSzTyxPKTb71 Also, a "dry" machine that lacks oil & grease will make a machine slow and noisy kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg

The total number of disks that I've found is 23 with 0 being zigzag and 22 being stretch stitch but that one requires a specialized foot. I love my 503a. The spool draw mechanism shines if you use and vintage thread spools with rough edges that occasionally drag on the felt. With modern smooth edge spools, it can be bypassed. My local thrift store just had a 401a and a 500a at the same time. The 401a had no power or pedal cords and was marked at $7 as a final attempt to sell. I bought it for kicks and manually turning learned how the cam stack interacts with special disks giving over a hundred different stitches possible. Went straight back to the store and bought the 500a for $100. I will note that both machines had broken bobbin springs. Leaving my trusty 503a in the cabinet and completing minor repairs on the 500a for a portable machine in the soft case it came with.

Just an afterthought, the felts on the 500 series are all glued and do not spin freely. This could be why the spool draw feature section of threading is exclusive to only 500 series.

Thanks for the video. I have the 503a and the stop motion on the handwheel is frozen. Where to I put solvent or oil on the handwheel to try to free it up. Wish you would do a video. Thanks.

The stop motion know may be over-tightened, or the clutch washer behind it may be stuck with dried oil/grease. It can be difficult to get penetrating oil onto that washer as it sits between the hub of the handwheel and the back of the stop motion knob. If you need to see the washer take a look at this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4vMfpSXoMZofqc Here is a video for regular maintenance of model 503A. At 59:20 I start showing how to remove the top cover kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZ-ViXdqeq5_fK8 When you have the arm cover removed you can see some of the back of the handwheel. You can try to get a spray tube into the area between the wheel and knob where the washer is, but good luck. I've had better luck blowing the back and sides of the handwheel area with a hairdryer. Be patient. The heat can soften the dried oil it if that's the problem and it can expand the parts and allow for turning. Sometimes having a person with a strong grip just force it to turn can work, or a two person/four hand system of hold handwheel/turn knob. If you are feeling brave you can rap on the end of the stop motion knob, towards the handwheel, with a mallet to try and "shock" the parts to come free. Risky behavior though.

Andy, that was very interesting. I watched the whole thing. I have (2) 503a's, which are in working order although the guy I had 'service' one of them broke the hinged lid and chipped the perfect paint. I was pretty unhappy about that, it was pristine before he got his hands on it. I learned a lesson there. I got another one afterwards in perfect condition and double checked everything before buying, then put it in the original blonde cabinet I got with the first machine. I also have a 503 which I've not looked at yet, (needs work) and a beautiful 403a in perfect condition with its original mahogany cabinet which I got from an estate sale for $35. All told, I'm a fortunate vintage Rocketeer collector. When I watched this video, I pulled out the 403a and went over it with you as you pointed things out. I took off the bottom tray and found a little linty grease on the gears but really not much. It must have been serviced not too long ago. I love your videos and I hope you'll keep making them. Thank you!

Andy, there's 3-503As on Ebay, just sayin'. I just sewed a set of 500D cordura dog boots for the first time. What a pleasure. The only thing I don't like about my 503 is that when forcing it through layers of heavy material it de-clutches at the most inopportune times while I'm hand wheeling.
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoy your 503A and sorry to hear about the de-clutching. (never happens on a 403A. haha, kidding) when the needle bar can't move and you turn the wheel it's almost like holding the handwheel and turning the stop motion knob to go into bobbin winder mode. You can check the clutch washer behind the stop motion knob. If it was installed 180 deg off the machine can de-clutch when under pressure. I've received machines with the washer installed wrong and people never knew b/c they did no heavy-duty sewing. If viewers wonder what I'm talking about, look at 54:26 of this handwheel video to see clutch washer install information: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZnRf4yvgqhkrrc

@@andytubesewing1953 Nothing wrong with it Andy. I took it apart, cleaned it, reoiled the shaft so it wouldn't move the needle bar and stuff and put it back together. It's the 503 so it just had the flat thrust washer with the nibs on the outside to hit the screw pin retainer thingy. It's just that thick tough material. Thanks-

@@ralphwatten2426 I appreciated the feedback, Ralph. I did not realize the 500D Codura had 6 filament fiber. That IS thick. Hard for any needle on a domestic machine to penetrate. I knew your washer was different but don't have a video of it so I used the 403A video. I guess the fact you can sew that is a testament to the power of a 503A. Thanks again for watching my channel and take care.

Thank you for making this video. I'm the new owner of a 403 and LOVE this machine. I've always had vintage machines like the featherweight 221 and singer 66, the newer machines are a waste of money in my opinion they can't hold a candle to the 201-2 or the 403. You may be surprised how easy some of the parts are to remove and clean and reinstall. One step at a time and if you are not comfortable then don't remove it! You can do a lot of cleaning without removing anything but the covers and motor. Excited for you and waiting to hear what you think when it arrives. Good Luck. BTW, I've met a couple of SInger Repairment who have forgotten much more than I'll ever know. It's just a hobby for me to try and help people and keep the machines in service. Take care.

I've never bothered to test the SPM myself, but there are reviews online that state it's about 1,000 on these models. They do not mention what stitch length was tested, ie 20 stitches per inch or 6. These machines are considered lower than the Model 301A which supposedly can sew 1,600 stitches per minute.
