I can really see now how if one does yearly tune-ups, one may never need to do a complete restoration ever again. If given a check up on a regular basis, one’s machine will be good to go for at least another 70 years! I love how you organize and name the chapters. It was easy to skip around and watch the sections I was most interested in first, and then gradually watch the other sections. Beautiful way how to service the tension unit by soaking it all as one piece in alcohol. And, bathing the needle clamp in alcohol, I like it- keeps the needle clamp from getting all gummed up. Your presentation was clear and interesting. Thank you Andy!
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
Remember that feeling you had when you finished a restoration and were admiring your beautiful machine? You get that again each year after servicing. 30 minutes of fun and, boom 🌟it is just like you restored it again. Some years you'll need to clean the commutator or adjust the pedals' spring a little depending on usage. I started soaking the needle clamp after a needle did not fall out of the clamp when I loosened the screw. I found it was a little sticky up in the needle port, so a short soaking clears that out. Thanks for the nice comment, Carole. BTW, could you tell I was using my copy of the Electric Flashlight Roger invented? I use it so much! 🔦

Greetings Andy, Thank you, So much learned. In two days my wife and I will drive 75 miles to get a 1962 Singer 328K being sold by a collector. It is good looking in photos with many accessories and manuals. When my father sold household appliances in the middle 1950's he often had a demo sewing machine that I would practice making pot holders. Today my wife and I are making rope bowls and other items. This Singer machine is for me, as she has adopted my Husqvarna 250 But there is no replacing for me any minute of this teaching. With many others I extend my prayer, for your health in grace and peace in your home.

Dear Andy, sew, glad to see you again! You were not too rusty, I enjoy your through explanations. Prayers for your improving health. As a 75 year old female, I want to give you a caution about what not to do. I had just purchased new glasses, and my Cocoa was getting a bit loud, so I grabbed my oil to give her a drink. Somehow, with my new glasses, I managed to oil the needle shaft. You can only imagine my dismay as the needle slipped out into my fabric. It took several times of this occurring before I figured out my mistake! And I only use my reading glasses to oil my machine now. If I may ask a question, my screw that attaches my presser foot to my machine will not tighten enough, and my foot drops off. I have replaced the screw, so it appears the hole is too big. Now, if it were a wood screw, I would glue part of a tooth pick in the hole, and the screw tightens right down, but I know that is not an option. I have used hot glue to fasten the foot, but that only works for a brief time. Thank you in advance for your help. You made my Saturday morning by posting a video today!😊
@ralphwatten2426 Жыл бұрын
Central Michigan Sewing Supply has replacement screws for your presser foot. The material of the screw is softer than the needle bar so they generally go first. They're cheap so even if it's not the screw, you're not out a lot of money. My Singer 404 had the same thing and a new screw fixed it.
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, Faith. I think it would be best to replace the presser bar. I thought about using something like JBWeld Steel to permanently attach the foot, but if the presser bar was ever damaged you'd need to cut it in half to remove it. You can find used presser bars for model 301A on sites like eBay, and others. Here are a couple on eBay I found right away. www.ebay.com/itm/374040920274?hash=item57169380d2:g:l7UAAOSwjzBiZpE- and another (see #14 in the drop-down menu of part numbers) www.ebay.com/itm/374040920274?hash=item57169380d2:g:l7UAAOSwjzBiZpE- For less than $20 you can get a replacement bar. I have a video about how to install the bar back into the machine and set it at the correct height: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3SUo4Wngdueac0 I don't know how comfortable you are with that kind of work, but even a family member or friend can just follow my video. Normally the screw would wear before the hole on the presser bar, but I have also had the problem of the screw hole being damaged or enlarged. I wrapped thread around the screw threads and reinstalled it, but it eventually works loose, and always at the worst moment. Replacing the bar would get you back to sewing instead of fussing around with the foot. Thanks again for the nice comment, and good luck

Someone on one of the vintage FB groups announced your return to much joy from everyone. What a nice surprise for your wife on her return. A beautifully maintained machine that runs like new. From this video I learned that I haven't been oiling the right holes on the front and bottom of my 301s so thanks for that. I was missing some entirely and oiling in holes that didn't need it at all. I like to put one of your vids on and follow what you do. Sometimes I put a random one on while I'm sewing because you give so much information in your side commentary. It's so interesting to learn what the parts are called and what they do. Just wanted to tell you that your fans are so happy you're back.

I'm still learning about the machines myself. It seems I always find something new about it when I work on it again. So glad you watched this video and those vertical shaft bushings will be happy to get a little oil now. It's nice that you like the terminology and names. Some of my friends said it was a waste of time, but I enjoy Singer's naming system. With hundreds of parts on a machine and thousands in inventory, they had to keep track somehow. You can just keep saying "Hey, toss me one of those dealy bobs" or "Boss, I need another crate of thing-a-ma jigs" I've always wondered whose job it was to come up with the names. I think they had a sense of humor when they use a 5-word name on a tiny set screw, haha. I so appreciate you watching my channel over the years. GB and take care.

Good information is never a waste of time. Also I like telling people that I adjusted the bight amplitude screw to realign the needle assembly all by myself. Especially the friends who have computer machines that quit, give error messages, and have to be taken to a $ervice shop to get them going again. Singer 301s rock!!!

Great to see you, thank you so much for all the vids. I dont have a 301, but one can allways learn something new. All my machines are serviced and in good working order thnx to you. the 201 401 and 431 are all ready to be used. i would have liked to use grease with molybdenum powder, but man that stuff makes a mess so it is a no-no I prefer to use technical gasoline to clean away oil and grease, but need to be careful with some plastisc, i use since i already got it while working with cars. There is no need to clean commutator from that graphite stuff only clean the space between is full of it that needs to be cleaned thats how i was taught when working with turbines, since the graphite also works as a lubricant as well as a making a better connection, the problem is when graphite get between in the spaces it creates an electric bridge and current doenst go the "right" way between 2 points thats why motor loses power because current can flow thruu more points which causes a braking field instead of a driving one. We were also taught to put fine grained sandpaper rough side to the carbons and make it the same radius as the commutator, this can be a bit tricky with smaller motors since there is no space where to put a sandpaper. i sure didnt know about the handwhel having cussioning but i am surely going to have a looksie at it.
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
I thought there was a Mica divider between the copper contacts on the commutator? The original Singer repairmen told me they used a type of eraser to clean off the excess carbon deposits on the commutator to provide better contact and increase the power of the motor, go figure. I bet the technical gas works well. It's just too volatile for me. How do you dispose of the used leftover? Here is one video showing the insides of a handwheel for the 15-91. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3amlYiNrZaYmdE The service manual for the 401 class machines has a nice diagram with instructions for dismantling on page 150. The manual is available for free to anyone at this link: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-401-service-manual1.pdf Thanks for keeping your machines running, and for watching my channel.
@sphinxios Жыл бұрын
@@andytubesewing1953 come to mind there could also be that isolation material comes up to the level of copper and when carbon keeps building up on that space it alse creates bridge between the "poles" it becomes the same issue where current flows the wrong ways an less current goes the right way it get less power to drive the motor as well as it can create "breaking" fields.
@ralphwatten2426 Жыл бұрын
The diamond stone is called a "brush seater". So along with seating the brushes, it cleans the commutator. It's very aggressive so don't use it a lot and don't press hard on the commutator. When you install new brushes or get them in the wrong holder you can hear the speed pick up as you use it.

I wish you all the best Andy. I was misdiagnosed with Bell's Palsy a number of years ago. Fortunately, I have not had to live with Bell's Palsy. Unfortunately, what I have had to live with is a very compromised 7th Cranial Nerve. It has been extremely stressed from Childhood Abuse. Fortunately I was able to get treatment from an excellent Neurologist who taught me how to de-stress my Cranial nerve. We are both still alive and I am doubly grateful. I love this 301 tutorial, again! Thank you for your good work here and Bless you for taking care of your self. Peace & friendship!

A truly revolutionary machine in its day. Only model SInger made that has a cradle to hold it in a cabinet but allows you to lift the handle and pull the machine right out for portability. Cast aluminum body with an upright motor with a gear to drive the handwheel (no belt) and gear-driven hook system (no belt). The first "Slant Needle" model tilts the head about 9 degrees toward the sewist and uses taller presser feet for a better view of the work area. If you'd like to know more here is a very well-done website about model 301: singer301.com/

So glad you are back. Will keep you in my prayers. You definately are the best!! Working on a 301 and having issues with the wheel and clutch. I got the knob back on but doubt if there will be any bobbin winding. seems like it may be stripped a tad. She has a broken vertical rod next to the the vertical fork. I havent named her yet.... Im thinking Bea because she is being such a brat with one issue after another!! again, welcome back>
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
thank you. I know I'm slow to reply, but try turning over (front to back) the clutch washer of the handwheel. The "vertical fork" is called the "Forked Feed Connection", part #170045. The vertical shaft next to it (left) is called the "Feed Lifting Rock Shaft", part # 170051, It can be hard to find b/c most sellers do not strip the machine that far, but amazingly here is a seller with a (very) large number of parts being actioned with 24 hours to go right now, and the top bid is only $21 for the whole bunch of parts. If I was still working on machines I buy this in a heart beat. www.ebay.com/itm/155524859498?hash=item243601066a:g:juIAAOSwy7tj~kn6
