Im planning on leaving my boat docked in salt water. My boat dealer said that for jet boat salt water maintenance you have to clean the jet nozzle and any other parts under the boat exposed to salt water atleast bi weekly. This seems a big con compared to an out board since you can just lift outboards out of the water to avoid corrosion

I'm stuck between a Dual Console with outboards, or something like a Yamaha 255. I know, bizarre models to cross shop, but I personally like to just hang out and enjoy the water, while my kids are making it VERY clear they want to fish. Although you can throw a line off anything that floats, it's really a lot easier to fish with kids (6, 4, 20 months) on a boat that's designed for it. Also, my wife demands shade and a head . . . The Dual Console seems the best fit, but I LOVE the clean aft section of the modern Yamahas.

Good thing about the Sea-Doo's is they have enclosed cooling, at least the Rotax engines do, unlike the Yamaha's or other brands which have open cooling. This means longer engine life.

I completely disagree with the maintenance between outboard and inboard! Have both. Maybe on the older outdrives but it's a simple car motor! And cheaper to work on!! Buy coil pack for a outboard and one for onboard! Also so much more expensive to operate a outboard! You want to run a good oil in a out board and between that and the huge amount difference in fuel cost is why I bought a inboard v6 over a outboard. 6 years of owning my inboard, starter is all I ever replaced, and cheap! Really just depends on what your using boat for, but avg lake owing give me a motor I can work on myself! And buy 90% of parts locally with no wait times!

Hi, first time researching about boat here and good 👍 information is best appreciated. I'm looking for a boat that's comfy enough for family trip, towing floating tubes, some fishing, easy to maintain and store. What type of boat would best recommended? Thank you 😊

We have owned every type of drive except a jet drive. We now have an IO. Great fresh water play boat. Huge swim platform. Higher maintenance than an outboard. When we were playing at the coast we only had straight inboards and outboards.
@Drunken_Hamster
@Drunken_Hamster 10 ай бұрын
If a boat is going to be in the salt and doesn't need more than 300-1000HP (triple, quad, and penta outboards are SO dumb), does that mean you'd only recommend outboards, V-drive and Direct drives unless you have money to burn on an offshore go-fast with twin 1500HP Mercs(in which case, sterndrive maintenance means nothing to your pockets)? Is there any kind of straight inboard where you can steer with the thrust like an outboard/stern drive and it does good in reverse or am I just relegated to improving my reverse skills? Lastly, do straight inboards turn better in one direction than the other? Kinda seems like that based on a couple videos I've seen of Nautiques, Centurions, and even Pavatis... If there aren't any steerable shafts, are there at LEAST some contra-rotating setups to prevent the torque steer that I assume might be the cause of this?
@oldmanrock7542
@oldmanrock7542 10 ай бұрын
@@Drunken_HamsterWow that's a lot of questions. If you have twin inboards you cann learn to use the twins to actually steer with in reverse. If you have a single inboard it will torque to one side when backing. If you want to spend real money z drives will rotate 360 degrees and take you in any direction you like.
@Drunken_Hamster
@Drunken_Hamster 10 ай бұрын
@@oldmanrock7542 Nah, I'm trying to be relatively cheap. Or well, not "custom ordered boat with abnormal drive type" expensive or "spend more on maintaining it than I would otherwise have to" expensive... TBH if there was some kind of long shaft high mount stern drive that didn't have a "bellows" I might go with that, but that doesn't exist... Anyway, I mostly want a boat for cruising/hanging out/getting to swim spots, islands, sand bars, etc. I'll mostly be by myself or with 1 other passenger, and I won't need provisions/space for more than 6 people, tops. One of those other passengers (the one I'll be with most of the time) WILL want to fish, but I couldn't care less at this point. That might change, though. And whenever I have another person in the boat, *I* _will_ want to dabble in wake sports. *_EDIT:_* Before you go further, I definitely can't afford a new boat, and I'm okay with restoring a used one even if I have to repower it/engine swap it. It shouldn't be _too_ hard to find and fix a 90hp Yam triple, 140hp Looper, or 260hp Merc 2.5. Or drop a junkyard 5.3 LS in an inboard. The boat will be used in both freshwater AND saltwater and due to the primary desire to "cruise" in it, I'll likely be transitioning between those areas (I'm in Central Florida). I plan to go out on days without extreme weather (what idiot CHOOSES to start a boat day during or going into a torrential downpour?), but will be staying out in whatever happens, at least until I can get back. I don't plan on going super far offshore, but the Bay and/or the Gulf of Mexico is a given. Also, I want to go FAST. At least 60, preferably 80, and while 100+ would be nice I realize that it's likely to compromise the other features of whatever boat I should get. From what I understand, I'll want a deep-ish V hull for a good wake and a good ride in the rough, and a lot of freeboard so that loading up on ballast to wake surf/wakeboard won't sink the boat. I also believe an Aluminum boat would be superior to a fiberglass hull, but I'm probably stretching my options thin as it is... So, what boat style do you think would be suitable for this, and more importantly; what engine/drive layout? I intend for the boat to be trailered since I won't be able to afford to put it on and off a rack or have a slip with a lift at a marina. And for the record, do you know what shape/style of boat a Fjordling 17 HT is called? Because I kinda like that semi-enclosed non-walkable-height cockpit idea for if you want to get out of the sun/wind.

I almost got stuck a few times and even with the on trimmed up I was hitting sand and then I got so scared there was a alarm on the aceeen I shut down the motor then restarted it and slowly got out of that shallow area- I wonder what happened with that alarm ? Hi, thanks for the on the spot info covering all kinds of prop systems. Question is which will be the best option on a 55feet trawler liveaboard, which will be 9 months in a marina and 3 months in action? I see stern drive or jet drive can be a good option, that they can be lift up for winter times. Shaft drive will be cheaper but protecting from barnicals will be a big problem. Which one will be more efficient in fuel? which one will still be efficient and cruise like 10-15knots/hour.?
@BoatBuyersSecretWeapon
@BoatBuyersSecretWeapon 2 ай бұрын
On a boat like that, the inboard or v-drive system is likely the best option because it will be in the water for most of the season. The larger props also make maneuvering easier in tight spots because they are also wider apart in most applications.
@JetSkiBuyFixPlaySellChannel
@JetSkiBuyFixPlaySellChannel 3 жыл бұрын
It's fairly common for jet drive boats to have two engines, two impellers and two wear rings. So you need to maintain and winterize two engines instead of one. Also if one engine starts to have problems and you rebuild or replace it you might have to do the same for the other engine. Since a fresh new engine will likely have more power then the other not rebuild engine.

@@BoatBuyersSecretWeapon I had a friend that bought a Yamaha Exciter 220. It has two 3 cylinder (two stroke) engines. The previous owner had replaced one engine when it was down on power only to find he needed to replace the second engine to match the new one. Jets are extremely manoeuvrable, Far more than any other drive. Slow speed is pin point precision in any wind or tidal stream. Try one and get taught by someone who can train you how to.

@dessilverson161 4 жыл бұрын
Where do I start? I too have used everything from a rowboat, PWC, sportsboat, RIB, Cruiser, sail and power, for the past 50 years or so, once had a go on a cargo ship. I am an instructor in sail, power, PWC etc, and a commercial skipper as well. Its just a case of feathering the bucket and the wheel. Get rid of that silly bit hanging under the outlet, that will do yo no favours at all for manoeuvring or come to that at all. Single jet can be the tricky one but, It can be made to do what you want it to, even sideways. Twin jets are the ultimate, you can just make it dance in a way that no other propulsion can do. I skipper for a commercial RIB company on occasions and the bigger 10-15 meter boats are all jet for the manoeuvrability we require. Some are fly by wire which takes the thinking out, but a lot of us switch it out and use the manual controls. Here is an example of one of the boats from the fleet, I know this is done by hand on the sticks and wheel as it hasn't got fly by wire. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnvQhKSDiL-gmMk The main thing with a jet is you have always got steering, even in what is considered to be neutral. Some do have trouble due to the steering effectively reversing when going backwards when you come from outboard or stern-drive configuration. In order of control over the boat in my opinion is:- 1st, twin jet. 2nd, is joint between single jet and twin outboard/Z drive. 3rd is single outboard, but even them on a tiller are very easy to put where you want it. 4th shaft drive, but use the propwalk to your advantage and that helps. Sorry for a bit of a ramble on, I am always getting told off when teaching this bit of the syllabus for getting carried away. Its a favourite of mine and slow speed manoeuvring in very tight spaces not touching anything is something I enjoy. Nothing like turning a boat in its own length in a gap only a few inches longer than it with the tide rushing through, sorts the students out that start getting too cocky as well, given that task!!
