I'm a Spaniard, not in the military, but I did go to Marine (Infantería de Marina) military camp when I was younger, so I've had my fare share of these MREs. When I first tried them, I thought they were awesome (and we we were made to eat them cold as part of our training, so I can only imagine how good they are heated up), right up there with the food you'd get at many typical Spanish bars, and they are always typical Spanish dishes, so they're a really good introduction to Spanish cuisine which anyone in the world can get shipped to their doorstep. In regards to the squid, I love it, but I understand a non-Spaniard being skeptical about it. It's very much an acquired taste and very different to anything else when it comes to its flavor. My favorite Spanish MRE is the one with Cocido Madrileño as the main course, I don't remember what number it was, but that one's great.

As a Spaniard, it makes me really happy to see foreigners appreciating our food. Yes, our soldiers eat like kings because the philosophy in this country is that a man with good rest, good food and lots of s*x is a happy man so that translates over to the military 😂 Edit: Over here we do not "season" our food like you're used to. We use natural ingredients, herbs and let them cook in their own juices. Things like garlic powder and other powders are very rarely used in Spanish kitchens.

That's because we believe that a well-fed soldier is better prepared for battle than the one who isn't. It boosts morale, soldiers get their calories naturally etc. If a soldier gets hungry and hates the food, he is gonna postpone it as much as he can, thus being more exhausted and weaker. If they like it, they'll eat, get their energy back and keep moving. That's the logic behind it. Also...our food is just *that* good but hey 😂

As Spanish I can confirm that we love fresh food, but we also have a quite unique canning industry. For all those interested, I think that you can buy practically anything online. Tuna salad is very typical in the Mediterranean (not only in Spain) I believe that canned fish, especially in salting and brine, dates back to the time of the Phoenicians, Its canning industry dates back to several centuries BC. From Cádiz to Greece. Tuna salad may be one of the oldest and most widespread meals in the Mediterranean. Now in summer on the table of practically every house. In addition, tuna is an almost mandatory ingredient in any salad. I can't live without a salad and gazpacho in summer. I know that the Spanish military, not accompanying that meal with fresh bread, makes it a bit hard, it would be perfect to feel at home.

If you think this is good, I recommend trying out imported canned spanish seafood. I had some recently and it completely changed my ideas on what canned foods are. the Spanish have turned canning into an artform. EDIT: On the subject of the Squid, the Vietnamese also have a variant of stuffed squid where they add minced pork to the tentacles and serve it with a light tomato dressing. It is obviously not canned as the squid is just lightly poached in broth, but it looks really good. There's a few recipes floating on the internet, or maybe check out a vietnamese restaurant that specializes in seafood.

Navy Vet here! I’m from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, I grew up eating “Caldo Gallego” the soup with beans, ham, bacon, beef and veggies and all the stuff in that mre. It’s soo good. In my opinion, of course I’m bias but the US MRE’s have gone down in quality. It’s more about brands, and almost everything is heavily processed. Times have changed I guess…

Hello guys, just wanted to tell u a bit more about the quince fruit. The quince is part of the pear and apple family. So that's why it simular to ace's apple jam/jelly. Also like you said the ingredients they cooked it in is probably the same or very similar. Im in the U.K and i no we had quince fruit grown here for a while. So i goggle it n the quince fruit been grown in England since the 13th century apparently. But they are also found in other parts of the world grown for years longer I think. And there are many varitys. Anyway just thought give you a lil info on it. Take care. X

Thank you for the insights, Heather. When looking at the pictures of quince fruit, many looked like a cross between an apple, pear, and lemon. TFW!

As a kid I used to eat raw quince like crazy. You have to let it get ripe but its still super tangy. Trees are all over Europe.
