I think it helps if you speak Arabic like him, Middle Eastern Arabic especially. ….. I have a friend who grew up in Aleppo and Beirut, now live in Tangier. He alternates between Arabic, Parisian French and British English flawlessly, speaking almost like native speaker.

It's because it's not your mother language for you to use it in your daily life.. If you were living in France or Québec, you wouldn't have forgotten, because although English is spoken there, the majority speak French.. So you would have to speak French frequently, which would eventually become a part of you..

@@magusperde365 I doubt he succeeded because the the Québ accent is brutal to master. You can always see Quebec actors working in France and putting on the French accent to make it unnoticeable that they're faking it. But no French from France can even pretend to know how to imitate the typical accent, because they just can't do it. You'll never see it in film, you'll never see Depardieu, Reno or Cassel try to pull it off because it would be instantly noticeable but Québecois.

Just found this in my search for "the quebcois accent". I was on a train from Toronto to Montreal a few years ago and the lady sitting next to me got on her phone and proceeded to say "c'est moi", but what got me was her totally Quebecois accent b/c the "moi" was pronounced like this: mwain - but pretty much don't pronounce the "n". I will never forget it!

As a Canadian trying to slowly relearn and brush up on french, I'm relieved that my pronouncing of European french is simply more difficult because of my natural Canadian accent 😂 it seems that all Canadians across the board tend to really emphasize our 'r's and 'au', 'oo's sounds and get a little lazy about other sounds like 't' sounds for example

Hearing you speak Canadian French as I was brought up calling it. Hearing you speak French reminds me that I don’t spend enough time in Canada with my family. My parents were born in Canada, but don’t speak French that much anymore because my sister-in-law is English and she doesn’t understand it. but it’s fun to listen to my parents start speaking in, switch to French Canadian, then switch back to English. and watch my sister in law shake her head up and down saying yeah I agree. Then my mom switch back to English. and my sister-in-law just smiles at them, like she totally understood what they were talking about. my mother gets angry when we don’t tell her , when she switches back-and-forth. We’re going to Quebec this weekend. Can’t wait. Thank you very much for your lesson. I knew French from France and Canadian French were different, but I didn’t think it was that different.

The Quebec accent has a lot in common with the accents of the Southern USA. The vowels are longer and there are more diphthongs.

English also borrows words from french like Habitant thats french and originates from the word habitué, translates to used to like in he is now used to this hard work. The habitants are the people that got used to New France's (french Canada) harsh cold climates.

I binge watched some episodes of "A la valdrague", a Canadian series yesterday and it was quite different from what I'm used to as a French learner. There's this particular big guy that sounded like he was speaking another language mixed with French when it was in fact French with NouvelleBronswick slangs😅

I wonder why the tight vs. loose vowels is the case in several European language vs. their North American accents - in British (esp RP - like the royal accent) vs. American English, Portuguese vs. Brazilian Portuguese (European Portuguese "mushes" a bunch of vowels all together), and even Castellano vs. Latin American Spanish (except probably Argentinian & Chilean Spanish) where the enunciation of words is so much crisper and exaggerated! As a learner of Spanish and Portuguese, it's SO much easier to learn Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese for me because of the exaggerated pronounciation. Even as I listen to Quebecois French, with subtitles, I can pick up way more cognates from my knowledge of Spanish, than Metropolitan French.

One of my french friends said everyone in France finds it hilarious when Celine Dion goes on French chat shows. She apparently always says in her heavy Quebecois accent "Je suis tellement contente!"" (I'm really happy!) and this apparently sounds Absolutely hilarious to French people.

I love this! I am anglophone (with Francophone heritage). I grew up in English Canada but have relocated to a very bilingual part of the country. The French here is largely Acadian French (which I grew up with and is its own monster haha). I also work with and encounter many Quebecois folk. The accents here are vastly different. I myself speak a reasonable amount of French and affect an entirely different accent and the other day my manager told my that my French accent sounds "very France". This is so fascinating to me. Thank you!

I'm learning French (from France) though I currently live in Montreal (I'm originally from Toronto) and this made me laugh so many times! France has so many other expressions or words that aren't the same in Québécois! I'm an anglophone with French roots from France (like 17th century haha) any advice for an English speaker to learn how to keep up with the fast paced language? Though I do find I understand French better than Québécois! I want to move to Paris so any advice helps!

Here in Rhode Island, USA, and the general environs, we have a large ethnic French Canadian community. (Chef Emeril is from Fall River). This is Rhode Island, so we got a million accents, from puritans to the Vietnamese boat people, and new neighbors all the time. Mark, your accent is typical Montreal French. The French spoken in Eastern Ontario and the Outaouais sounds very similar. However, as you travel into other regions of Quebec (the Sagueney Lac Saint Jean), and especially the Gaspe, then the accents are different. The Acadian accent is very different.

@edwardsaulnier892 I would not say that in the 21st century Acadians really speak French. They've already been assimilated into English. Fewer and fewer Acadians think in French. Quebec is the only French-speaking region of North America.

I prefer the Quebecois accent, i know people say it sounds rough, but people forget that to come to French Canada you had to be the best of the best, get permission from your parish priest, while the English sent all sorts of scum bags to the new world, [prisoners, the lowest of the low. The best of French society emigrated to the new world, and this is from an English speaking Ontarian. Quebec culture impresses me, as does the closeness of their families.

I definitely have an ear for someone speaking French, but it is more difficult for me to distinguish between Metropolitan French and Quebecois French. One Quebecois woman told me, "Canadian French is friendlier-sounding." I am trying to figure out where someone learned to speak French not judge their personality! 😂 So, Mark, I will definitely keep my ears open for the distinguishing features that you mentioned!

@johnbuterbaugh What that person meant by that is the tone in the voice of people speaking French in Québec. And it is absolutely true, Quebeckers are less stand-offish, and that is reflected in their language and how they interact with other people. Comparing Montreal with Paris as places is like comparing Vancouver or Boston with New York City; in other words, it simply cannot be done. It has nothing do with accent.

It depends. Believe it or not, bust most of the movies/series in Quebec are either in European French (brought directly from France) or gets redubbed in Quebec but with the same European accent (yeah, for some reason - even when they could simply use the French version right away). Of course, there are exceptions, but that's what happens most frequently. It's as if the British would redub a whole American series but keep the American accent instead of using their own or not dubbing the series at all. As an example, a bunch of Disney movies that are already dubbed in France will get a new dub in Quebec, but the voice actors will imitate the European accent rather than using their regular accents. Check out Brave, Tangled, and Lion King 2, for instance; they all have both a French dub and a Quebecois dub, but the accents remain the same. On the contrary, The Simpsons does have a Quebecois dub where they do use the Quebecois accent.

To be honest, all European languages spoken in North, Central, and South America are similar in that way. The original settlers here were all poorer people from their birth countries and first settled in the 17th and 18th centuries. Once separated by an ocean they were cut off from the way the language continued to evolve in the country of origin. North American English, for example, uses a LOT of pronunciations and vocabulary that were long since abandoned in England (Where I live in Kentucky you'll still hear the words "yonder" and "afeared" which the rest of the world abandoned). The hard American 'r' is actually the original way 'r' was pronounced and it was only later that British English moved away from that. None of that makes the dialect inferior, just different. The same is true for Canadian French and to top it off you also had the Anglophone government attempting to stomp out any French once they gained control of the French territories (something similar happened in the US with former French territories like Louisiana and they were, unfortunately, far more successful in killing it). They began a PR campaign to convince people that Québécois French wasn't REAL French but a degraded, lesser form and so they were doing everyone a FAVOR by stomping it out. So being forced to speak English and being surrounded by English speakers, Québécois French adopted more English words and morphed to be a little more North American English-like with a more pronounced 'r' and more loose, dipthongesque vowels than International French and the Anglophone gov succeeded in convincing the world that made it uglier and inferior even though a couple decades before it was known by European French speakers to be pleasant and quaint.

Yes, my wife is Mexican and understand France french much easier than rough Quebecois. Although we can neutralize our accent to "standard" to be understood better.

I learned French in Paris, so when I hear a real French accent, it is soooo much easier to understand the a the Quebec accent. And, honestly, much easier on the ear. It's to bad because France is on the other side of the ocean while Montreal is about 5 hour drive.

Spoken like a person who has clearly never been to Quebec. The Quebecois are basically stereotyped to always be angry and spitting our their iconic church based swears at even the mildest inconveniences. Of course in reality, they are human beings capable of expressing more than one emotion, but alas that's what they're known for.
