I am getting a lot of comments about the R colors. Just like I said in the video all cameras are set to manual white balance K6500 and processed with Canon Digital Professional. All cameras are calibrated straight from Canons factory. It’s a fair comparison and I always noticed the R to have more green colors. That was the main reason I didn’t get it personally when it came out. If you have the R and love it that’s awesome, I am not surprised because it’s still an amazing camera even thou it got the last rating from me personally.

RP looks amazing in this comparison and I guessed it to the first photo. And most importantly, this comparison shows that the dynamic range is not much worse than others, and the color rendition is one of the best. I've just upgraded from the R to R5 - both great cameras really and the image quality of the R is comparable to that of the 5d-mk4 let's not forget! A good photographer will get great images from both (and a bad photographer...). What I like about the R5 though is the ergonomics with the joy stick and quick control dial, and as someone who crops a lot (street photography), the 45 mp is helpful! The IBIS is also helpful in using the super lightweight lenses like the 50mm STM, which doesn't have in-lens stability. I'm sure in a year's time we'll be hearing about how the R5c or R3 (or whatever) is the new must-have, but I think if you're happy with any of the R's, then best focus on the photography than the equipment and enjoy!

Apparently that specific camera you’re using has some type of sensor issues. When it comes to the R line, when you’re using the same lens in all of them, Canon has made sure that almost 98% of the photos taken with look very similar in terms of quality of course..,and that one you’re using is more on the green side that any other ones I have use or seen. Two card slots aren't necessary, but they can be handy. One time I was shooting a fashion show and they also wanted it shot in JPG and wanted the photos between the sets. Two slots allowed me to shoot JPG to one card and RAW to the other. Then I could hand off the JPG card between sets and drop in a newly formatted card for next set (while keeping the RAWs all on a larger card that stayed in the camera). After the show, I had RAWs, which allowed me to fully edit the shots for my own portfolio.

I just got this last year. It came with a kit lens to see how it works. I love it. The most important one I needed is using iso which I can go higher than my Sony which can only go 16000. The only thing I noticed was the noise that easily sees in darker areas of the image when using high ISO. This camera works for me. In the future, I am looking for another camera for video. I actually mixed up the RP and R5 photo guesses at 3:15... I use an R5 at my day job (marketing/multimedia production) and it is awesome. I used to have the R because it was the only thing decent out at the time from canon and the RF lenses looked juicy. 3 years later, I convinced my boss to upgrade for the uncropped 4k, 4k 120fps, in-body stabilization, and 8k. The 45mp is awesome but the file sizes are 55mb for uncompressed RAW. Eeeek! If you can afford it, definitely get the R5 as it will last quite a while with the specs it has.

I own all 4 and the RP is the camera that goes everywhere with me since it is light, compact, and… cheap/expendable! Which means i fear not for its survival and have no reservations of putting it into harm’s way or shady situations (like late night street photography) where a red-ringed R5/R6 would get too much attention. Paired with the RF 50 1.8, EF 40mm 2.8, or EF 85mm 1.8 are my favorite configurations that are stealthy as well as capable. I also keep an RP unstrapped and clipped into my belt as my backup, C camera that usually holds a prime or ultrawide when I’m dual strapping my 28-70 and 70-200. It’s so small and light but still capable - It’s a great utility body and a great way to start full frame since it will be backwards and forward compatible and viable for years to come. Now if the RP used the LP-E6 instead of the inferior LP-E17 it would be the perfect value proposition

I got the RP three years ago and it has been wonderful. My only complaints are: lower battery life due to LP-E17 vs LP-E6; having to use a bypass cable for vertical shutter release (and only 3rd party battery grips available); no vertical oriented scroll wheel on those battery grips; and your hand size may require the official grip-only accessory that adds 2cm to the bottom. First of all, I should say this, the model is so beatiful. Second, I wanna say my opinion about these cameras. Without considering price, R5>R6>R>RP R5 shows the most natural images among them. So that's first position. R6 shows accurate AF and bright feeling, and very good quality in low light. RP shows good color but if situation is not the best, then quality goes down sharply. So thats the last position. R is not excellent, but not bad. Just so so.

Ancient, long-retired pro from the film days here, turned amatuer. This is interesting! I have both, the R and R5, and I'm guessing others do as well. I had intended on doing a test similar to yours (fixed kelvin), not to compare cameras, but to look at color variation between my vintage and modern lenses (Leica R, Zeiss Contax, old Nikon workhorse from my working days, and modern Canon including the 85mm RF). Adding a comparison between the bodies now makes sense to see if the results are the same. Anyone questioning the results you encountered can also do the same (and should, before questioning them IMHO). I'm going to try your test with my two cameras, using the same settings and Canon software (then compare the raw files in Capture One). Many of us are familiar with sample variation in lenses (to be expected) but with bodies? I've not contemplated the possibility before (and have not seen others, either), but that would, indeed, be something interesting to find out. And then, this becomes another item for comparing brands as the variation within the Canon line is eye-opening. Of particular interest, many of us probably remember when fixed lighting (both, LED and fluorescent designed for photography) was relatively new, and threw a horrible green cast. Technology has gotten better these days, mitigating the green unpleasantness. But if the results you found bear out, this is particularly interesting for those who use LED or even now-outdated fluorescent photography bulbs (5600K). I.e., if the camera is contributing to a green cast, it can add effort to post, and then, completely eliminating a green cast may come at the expense of other colors leaving less than optimal results (speculating this point). In any event, thank you for this very interesting, excellent, and eye-opening comparison. I've been watching your vids from time to time for many years. You have a great touch and produce astounding results... consistently.

@@IreneRudnyk Had a "duh" moment last night thinking about this. Your observations are correct, but there's an explanation--and it's not a problem with the EOS R. Since I'm not a content producer, setting up the experiment to show what happened will take some time--I'll explain now, then when I do get to it (testing lenses anyway) I'll share a link. Back in the film days we could get unwanted color casts from light reflection off nearby objects. In particular, very green settings (green grass, shubs, trees, etc.) would through a color cast onto the color negative film--a cast that had to be corrected during printing. I remembered this after recalling some green screen work with my daughter. Though I had a strong K5600 light on her as the subject, the amount of green spill reflecting forward off the green screen was problematic. I tried to move her as far forward as possible, but it remained a challenge nonetheless. So why does the R5 look better? Well, this makes me smile. The early complaints about the R5 mentioned that it was too magenta (relatively speaking). If a picture is too green, how to color correct? Add magenta. And, walaa... Did those clever color science engineers at Canon decide to alter (perhaps ever-so-slightly) the color science so that pics taken in green environments look better? Taking outdoor pics in a garden environment is rather popular. I guess this is the conspiracy theory in me making such a silly guess. But what holds, is that your natural environment is quite green (beautiful for pics, but green, nonetheless). Thus, the "bad" magenta shift in the R5 actually serves to counterbalance a greenish tint emanating from the foliage. This is not a problem with the EOS R, but perhaps a clever tweak with the R5 (me guessing). The best way to avoid color shifts with electronic sensors is to white balance with an 18% grey card--but the white balance must adjusted at the subject location. I.e., taking the WB closer to the ground will cause a stronger green shift and camera compensation, and closer to open sky (relative to the subject) will cause a bluer shift (and camera compensation). Thus, the most accurate color balance should be set at face-level with the subject. And then, if lighting changes (clouds shifting, time of day, or moving the subject) a new white balance adjustment will be required. Or save the fuss and fix it in post using RAW files. Anyway, this was a good brain teaser, and I'm pretty sure a controlled test could be set up to confirm the results. When I eventually do such a test, I'll use a gray card so that actual levels could be observed with vectorscopes in post. Keep up the outstanding work, and thanks again for doing this comparison.

Great review Irene. Respect to the real world comparison. It's basically what matters most to anyone trying to decide which camera to buy rather than specs only comparisons which most people do. A little more comparisons with one or two different lenses would be appreciated. Cheers again for the wonderful review. 🥂

Couple of other tips here: If you shoot jpg and just want to use auto white balance you can go in in the cameras menu and tweak the colors toward blue and red, don’t overdo it and do some testing. It’s under the camera icon menu and fourth tab called WB Correction. Now you will have a cooler tone or maybe more neutral tone applied to every shot or video. And if you shoot in raw it’s easy piece to correct in post with a cooler tone in white balance tool and maybe at a bit of magenta in white balance tool as well. Hope it helps.

Seeing so many technical videos on Canon's R lineup and comparisons, you start to lose focus on the art of photography and the qualities of each. I went from a Digital Rebel in '04 to a 6D in 2015 to an M50 last June(mainly to use it for Zoom w/Canon EOS Webcam Utility) to the RP in August. During Covid, I've been able to do more travel than I used to. And the results I get with the RP and the ease of use over a DSLR and the just amazing quality of RF glass, I've been very happy. I'm building up my collection of lenses and maybe I'll get an R5 in the next year or two.

This is no secret that some photographers crave the vintage styling of cameras and also the film-look in images. We do get the film-look in the images produced by Canon 5D Classic. However, the retro-styling is something unavailable to current Canon camera users. Nikon enchanted its users with Nikon Df few years ago and now, Nikon Z fc. I’m simply awestruck how beautiful those cameras look! How about Canon thinking in the same line and present us with few such styles like the great Canon AE-1!

Irene, do most photographers provide the clothes for "models"? I noticed you have a wardrobe for models. I wondering how much of a service you provide. I see youtubers hiring models but I thought you get clients and that they come with their own wardrobe. Do your clients come for shots for their portfolio? Are you getting work from fashion clothes companies that require you to hire? Or are some of your videos you're doing tutorials and that you need to hire the models for that? Are a majority of your models instagram models?

hello! great shots! what do you think, if the RP is good enough for a first camera in 2023? As a daily camera I use my Samsung S21 :) and I want to switch to smth decent and mby full-frame, because as I understood the pixels are bigger and may get more light and the boke effect should be better with a full-frame. I plan to use it as a travel and every day camera for landscapes, nature, architecture (also street photography) and family.

I bought the R after it came out so I could see if I like the mirrorless camera and was coming from the Canon 5D IV. I had a bad accident with the R and went ahead and bought the R5 and I love it and hardly ever use my 5D IV. The R was sent off to Canon and it came back with a $700.00 estimate to fix it. I declined since I would probably sell it and loose a lot. As they say, it's the photographer and the lens that makes the shot and you proved it!

Nice comparison! Great! ... I have two RP bodies ... I use them with the EF 50/1.2 and the EF 85/1.2 lenses. One lens for one body. No lens changing. No dirt inside. :-) The old EF lenses are not that sharp and have a lot of color fringing - but I like the look! And even because of that I'm old, too - my eyes are weak and the picture quality is more then perfect for me! :-)

The R6 makes the most sense of all the cameras based on cost and performance.
@youknowwho92473 жыл бұрын
I second that. Personally I feel like the R6 does everything the R5 does unless the user a) produces lots of large prints or b) needs 8k video. But the R6 is literally half the price where I'm from (this is used prices for both).

I do have an R6 and did already shoot with all the other cameras, for me the r5 is the winner but im sorry the R6 is clear the second... For the stabilisation, AF, video without getting hot, science colors... Just wanna ask you how do you work with CR3 in lightroom, its losses all the canon color science, please do a video with that... continue the amazing work
@minhtuanca3 жыл бұрын
Canon and Adobe have almost stopped playing together in ICC profile synchronization. Therefore, editing CR3 on Lightroom or Camera Raw is not the most effective because it loses its original color. Currently I am using Captrue One and Canon Digital Professional to edit CR3 and the results are very good.
@Digi203 жыл бұрын
Yes its a shame, the supplied color profiles for the R5 and R6 are basically useless and look horrible. You can create your own profile with a color calibration device. Also, you can buy profiles for example from color fidelity. they are definitely better than what adobe supplies and improve things a lot. still they do not look as good as the camera jpegs color wise, but after a little tuning i am personaly okay with them.
