Never mentioned the most revolutionary and fascinating feature in AvP 2010: You can chase your tail as the Xenomorph. If you spin around, it's THERE, waving like it's got its own physics, instead of being just a weapon that pops into existence when needed. Like, HELLO TAIL! Forget seeing your own legs in an FPS, AvP 2010 has a TAIL.

AVP 99 actually has an interesting design idea in it that wasn't done at the the time and hasn't really been done much since. In most FPS games the enemies' are activated by the presence of the player in close proximity. Open door > activate enemies. In AVP 99 however, in many levels there are a large percentage of aliens who just hunt you throughout the entire level. Proof? Start up level 3 and don't move, wait 2-3 minutes and you'll get swarmed with Xenos while still in the APC.
@bezejel
@bezejel 4 жыл бұрын
I think it's more because of how the aliens spawned. While there was enemies placed in certain areas (predators, facehuggers,xenoborgs) I think there were alien spawn entities in the vents or something and if you're close enough to them, they'll spawn aliens that immediately move towards you. Each spawner probably has a set amount of aliens that it can have alive at a time. I doubt there was any actual 'hunting' I think they just automatically know where you are and constantly try and get to you. BUT the important thing is, it felt like you were being hunted and you had to keep moving so you weren't overwhelmed, and that worked very well.

The greatest moment in avp 2010 multiplayer was me and another random dude playing predators vs a bunch of aliens and defending a small room while hordes and hordes came at us . Holy shit we lucked out on so many shots we appeared invincible. After all that one alien was tilted and came to us.... he wasn't fighting back he just stared at us and tried to communicate. We adopted this new alien and it became out pet for the rest of the game where he guided us to other aliens so we could wipe them out xD i swear at the time this was the funniest shit ever

I remember playing infestation mode. I was a marine witha bunch of randoms. I got a shotgun. And we all holed up in one room. The aliens kept coming. One by one the others fell and joined the alien ranks. Until I was all by myself with way to much time left in the match. It was a small room with like 4 or 5 entrances. And I watched each of them like clockwork. The moment I even SAW an alien I blew it to bits. I was so tense the entire time and I must have killed at least 30 aliens while I was alone. And a few more before that. (It's been years so I don't remember the exact amount. It coulda been a lowly 10 for all I remember.) I clutched that round so hard. And after it was over everyone was just impressed. That was one of my first times playing multiplayer anything. And I suck at fps games normally. So THAT FELT GOOD! Again im normally not good at this sort of thing. But defence is something I can do exceptionally well and I made it work. Haven't really ever done anything that impressive since but I'll always have that memory that tells me. You CAN be good at these.

AVP 2010 is honestly a pretty decent reboot (yes 2010 IS a reboot of the games) and while playing it multiple times can make its flaws stand out like a sore thumb, things like its music, beautifully designed world, the collectibles, and the lore kept me going. Rebellion has said they were in talks of a potential sequel, it's been nearly nine years since and we still haven't got a proper sequel to the game that ended with multiple cliffhangers showing the fight heading for the Xenomorph homeworld. As much as the game gets boring the more times you play it, the idea of the fight heading for the Xeno's Homeworld has left me waiting for the sequel to one day arrive.

I felt the SP of 2010 wasn't bad but i play avp mostly for the MP, and this was the problem with 2010, while the campaign was solid, the multiplayer felt like they took everything they(Rebellion) and Monolith did with the previous AVP games and threw them out the window, AVP2 had a massive online component fully costumizable, with the molting queen, alien life cycle, exosuits for the marines and other special stuff for the pedators that made the whole package perfect IMO, Rebellion only had to expand upon that, instead... you had the most basic MP component...

As a story/single player game, it was pretty good and holds up well. As a multiplayer title, it was doomed; The ratio in matchmaking of predators to aliens to humans was laughably bad; I believe it was like 2 marines to 1 alien to 1 predator? To say nothing of the terrible and idiotic rock paper scissors system of melee that was the xeno's *only combat tool* but they weren't even the best at it; Predators could not be knocked down. By anyone. Even their stuns didn't last as long as other races stuns. The predator was painfully overpowered; They were immune to knockdown unlike the other two races, they reliably and easy knocked down both other races IN melee range, they had the best long range tools AND strongly contested Marines Mid range superiority, and they had the most HP. Not to mention the self heal they could do, and the multiple 1-shot weapons. The aliens were painfully neutered; They were out DPS'd in melee by Predators, they couldn't stun/knockdown/grab predators (but could very easily be stunned/knocked down/grabbed by preddies), they had arguably the least health of all 3, and the least variety. Even humans, in close range, were capable of blocking xeno attacks and stunning xenos for an easy counterkill if they knew how to block/parry. There's a reason there were different types of Xenos from melee to ranged in AvP2's multiplayer. Hell, 2010's xenos used to have a jumping/wall tail attack the experienced could use to bypass block/parry spam, to give them tools to either punish excessive blocking or bait out vulnerability for normal melee swipes....then the devs nerfed/removed it by adding heavy restrictions and limitations on its activation. The marines felt overshadowed; While they weren't outright "better" than Xenos at melee, their ability to easily and infinitely block and parry meant they were far from defenseless at close range, and a parry often meant a guaranteed dead xeno. Their mid range was where they shined, both in tools (flashlights/motion track) and firepower (damage falloff, weapon range). While they had a few tools for longer range, the Predators clearly eclipsed them. The end result is a race/choice that, if you know your basics and how to cover each others ass, will prove to be incredibly difficult to break. Depending on map, marines could easily stick together as a group in spots that limited or removed a Predators long range capabilities, and covering fire/proper sight lines meant no xeno or predator was easily getting into melee range, leaving Predators to pressure marines through the mid range where they were most equalized. But you needed a good few humans to pull this off, and the game gives them the highest pop count in games so statistically likely to happen.

Nah. AVP2 was good, and it did some cool things (the Alien life cycle for one) but it was cartoony and floaty. Say what you want about canned kill animations, but grabbing a dude in AVP2010 and watching the fear as the tail rips through him is much much more satisfying than spamming LMB and watching a random gibs fly off. The Predator felt perfect; the visor modes, traversing around, killing marines, the fucking plasmacaster looked and felt spot on (it always felt weedy and crappy in previous games). I liked the Marine campaign in AVP2 but AVP2010 had a much greater sense of atmosphere; I replayed it way more than AVP2 just because I felt like a Marine more. Heavier controls, punchier weapons, and the Alien AI was actually pretty good to fight against. Compared to the AVP2 Alien AI that just runs straight at you flailing it's arms like a zombie on ritalin. Honestly, the Alien AI in AVP2 is *terrible*. The DOOM Aliens TC had better AI. I played a bit of the AVP2 multiplayer and it was fucking gonzo. Aliens flying around the map like they were Springheel Jack, Marines firing rockets around, it was dumb. AVP2010's multiplayer was FANTASTIC, especially Predator Hunt and the Alien mode (I forget the name). I'll never forget me and a random backing into a corner, smartgun blazing, just trying to outlast the incoming Aliens as we waited for the timer to count down. Or the panicked firing into the trees as I picked off the Marines one by one in Predator Hunt. It was fantastic. imo, AVP2010 aged a lot more gracefully and if I was going to pick either to return to, it'd be Rebellion's effort every time.

The multiplayer was super good, I miss the online from this game so much. All, on ps2 there was Predator Concrete jungle wasn't close to an open world pred game. Personally, i would like a hunting game where you play the pred in huge maps and you can hunt creatures depending on the map. Having to observe them, know which one would be the most worthy kill. With a system like the nemesis system from Shadow of mordor were the NPC can rank up by fighting themself or surviving your attack. Imagine, hunting in a city where different gang compete or in a jungle were different guerrila faction are at war. You being there only to hunt.

AVP 2010 was actually kinda dope. I liked the multiplayer. I also feel it could've been better if they fixed a few minor things in the rock, paper, scissor combat. The other is game types in multiplayer. Having some odd tilt in the triangle. Level design is important in this. The levels I don't think are built all that well. Too many areas built specifically for the specie you are with a few exception. Which makes it a camp game unless you were a predator.

AvP2 was decent but it commited two cardinal sins: First, it absolutely loved spawning hordes of xenomorphs pretty much on top of you when you crossed certain invisible triggers, which made the Marine's motion tracker almost worthless; And second, it applied gun physics to melee combat, which made the Alien and Predator campaigns harder than they needed to be. I lost count of how many combistick strikes simply refused to connect or how a 2 meter long battlespear somehow had less range than a xenomorph's claws.

And let's not forget the weapons of mass destruction they carry around on their wrists as a prophylactic measure. I'm sure in times where they actually need them (such as all out war) those types of weapons see a fair bit more use than the spears and the danger-frisbees.

The actors in the AVP FMV's are indeed the developers. They're actually redone. These were added in the Gold version that came out in 2000, and what is essentially the Classic 2000 version you can buy on Steam nowadays. The original 1999 release had different FMV's with actual actors. Not much better, but way less cheesy. I do prefer the original ones.

Just a thing to point out is that besides being flawed and bugged, these games were trying their best to create an experience, which basically means they focused on story and atmosphere more than anything. Look at Far Cry 2, where the guns would eventually jam and break unless you repaired them, where you were punished for picking up enemy weapons by said weapons being in heavily worn condition. PS: I don't want to say 'realism' since im afraid i might get flak from fans of the gameplay-focused 90s era of gaming.

I loved the atmosphere and lighting of the first game, and 2010 was graphically awesome, but in terms of gameplay, AvP2 remains Top Dog. The singleplayer campaign was excellent, being one of the few singleplayer games I've actually completed (I usually get bored and lose interest), especially the Alien's campaign, where you start as a facehugger and progress to a fully-grown drone. Cool as fuck! The multiplayer even had an Alien Lifecycle mode where Alien players spawned as a facehugger, having to latch onto Human or Predator player, spawn as a Chestburster and survive long enough to grow into a Drone (or I think you could choose to grow into a Runner or Predalien as well, I can't remember). And if you suvived long enough (or was it got enough kills?), you would molt into a QUEEN. Not a Praetorian, but a god damn Queen! It was pretty awesome. But I liked that the melee combat was still more nuanced than AvP1, with predators having multiple attacks and being able to super jump to help evade alien attacks, and the Aliens getting a new Pounce attack, all while still remaining free-from, avoiding the shitty lock-on quick-time-event style of combat from AvP 2010. And uh... do I need to mention the hilariously stupid conga-line buttfuck train executions constantly present in AvP 2010? Not to mention the game modes! AvP2 had some of the best game modes in history (along with Rainbow Six 2: Rogue Spear and Team Fortress Classic mod for HL). Survivor was cool as hell, a kind of Last Man Standing where each time a player on the Defender team dies, they respawn as a member of the Hunter race. The last Defender player alive wins. Then you have Overrun, which was similar, except you could pick your race, and last team standing wins. But Evacuation was the real treat. The Attacker team had to navigate the level from their spawn point to the evacuation point while the Defenders would try to kill them. It was fantastic fun. Anyway... You probably played AvP2, but if you haven't, you should DEFINITELY obtain a copy and give it a go. Maybe another review. If I remember correctly, it's still possible to play multiplayer with the help of a CD key generator, and when I last played in 2017 or 2018, the community was still alive and strong!

Something that might have helped you survive the Alien levels....your hiss sound effect (which is a mappable button so you can hiss on command) will actually get reactions from the humans. The typical civilians, the ones carrying pistols or molotovs will panic. I used to hide in the shadows above the molotov guys and hiss. Occasionally they would panic and drop the molotov at their feet. Setting themselves and anyone near by on fire. The Marines on the other hand would come looking for you. So you could draw them away from their buddies. You really had to think like a Xenomorph in that game. There were so many cool little hidden mechanics in that game. I really wish it would get a graphical update.

AvP was the first game I ever saw on a PC. It was back in 1999 when I was 9 or 10 years old, my family was poor and I had a friend who was middle class and rich by comparison. I went to his house and saw a PC in person for the first time and he put this game on to show me because he knew I loved the Alien and Predator films. I thought PC's were something adults used for work, had no idea you could play games on them. Anyway I was blown away by its graphics (superior to anything on the Playstation 1 which was what I had at home) and also the violence and gore was more violency and gory than anything on the PS1. By the time I saved up for a PC of my own AvP 2 was out and I couldn't even find a copy of AvP1 (pre-eBay and Amazon days here), but I'm happy about that because AvP 2 was superior in every way to AvP 1. I was excited for AvP 3 but it ended up sucking ass.

I think the game is okay. It mostly suffers from abundant reused assets and half baked ideas imo. It needs more variety and needs to be fleshed out more. Its technically and mechanically competent, but needs more creativity. Take the alien campaign for example. The idea of being an especially intelligent alien that's been captured and needs to escape has alot of promise. I imagine a portal-like game but you're a xenomorph. So imagine going through a series of morbid tests while slowly building a plan of escape as you become more familiar with the facility and its weaknesses. Like a raptor in jurrasic park. You're probing the facilities for weaknesses, looking for opportunities to either exploit now or later. A combination of puzzle solving and brutal murder, thus giving the player the feeling of being Ridley Scott's "Perfect Organism". Unclouded by remorse or morality, and wicked smart to boot. But no. The actual game isnt nearly that creative. You escape because the power goes out and thats it. Boring as fuck.

Realisticifying! Also, I gotta say, I think AvP2 from Monolith is the best in the series. Finds a great balance between speed and "realism" in the gameplay in general, and the story is done really well. I loved AVP (2010) - and I even replayed it on PC recently. I think a majority of my enjoyment of it was the multiplayer stuff with friends, back in 2010 Xbox Live stuff really carried games like this on their backs. These sort of hunt-and-seek gameplay mixed with old fashion Modern Warfare 2-esq chat and lobbies really made this one hell of a experience. I very recently tried playing AVP 1999 but I couldn't get into it - AVP2 you can get for free on PC very easily since it still got a MASSIVELY loyal community with their own discord, forums and everything - I found that one much more my speed and enjoyed it the most. I still love AVP 2010, but it could've really been improved by a few touch ups. It sucks that these sequel games end up not really adding to what they've got beforehand, then reinvent the wheel - but with less.

AvP 99 and 2 had a great asymmetrical PvP. 2010 tried to level the playing thing for all the characters, wich made it so much more boring. What was a balanced match in AvP 2? 6-7 marines vs 3-4 aliens vs 1-2 predators.

No-one wanted to play a game where 1-2 people got to be objectively more powerful characters and just dominate everyone, unless the other teams were perfectly co-ordinated. AVP2010's balance was actually really good; I knew a guy who would always pick Predator because he thought he'd just get to stomp everyone and get an easy win.. he got so mad when I kept killing him as a Marine. Guy just kept running at me uncloaked, letting me hose him down. Same went for Alien; if you weren't using the shadows and surprise you were an easy target. Numbers weren't a way to win, you had to be smart.

Just ordered this, loved watching it as a kid and I'm so glad to finally be working. Fulfilling some of those wishes while they still can be.

Still one of my favorite games. As an old school lover of the crossover series, a mainstay AvP1/2 addict, and even a fanfiction nerd who started off at age 13 writing AvP fanfiction, I'm right there with you in being disappointed by the reboot game. i always love revisiting the original, and this video was an excellent way to do that.

No comparison. They're both epic! I remember being in 8th grade counting the days the 99 got released. 2010 was abandoned by the summer it was released in February. Good times before the bullshit we live in now
