The 606 tweeter isn't mounted from the back side. The metal surrounding can be removed, then you will see that it is held in place by four small bolts.

They are two different series I guess. 600, 700, 800 - while I do find it interesting it would have been better to compare the 705 S2 - that would have been a closer comparison in terms of how they have evolved their materials and other techniques.
@kdomster91413 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, it would have parts quality specially tweeter cap as good as Danny's fav Sonic Cap, Mundorf Brand that is in the same quality territory as SoniCap or better .... Danny did not mention that these woofers are top notch quality and build better than what Danny's uses in his design....

I got some 706s and use them for reference for my speaker building. They are my bass-med-treble level guide. Essential for an amateur like me with varying room acoustics. I copied the sound of the 706s with my made speakers, but then changed the sound on my made speakers just a little bit for my personal touch. I reckon my 706s lack treble a bit in my room and the voice sound is a bit warm and not throaty enough. Now, in that room my made speakers absolutely smoke the 706's. No bought speaker priced at 2 grand is going to sound exactly how you want it...but with making speakers from scratch with 2 grand monitors, you are going to make great speakers. That is if you know how to tweak the sound of your speakers to make them sound how you want them to sound (instead of a clone of the monitors). And if you can build crossovers you can change it if you move to another room (or if you change the room's acoustics, or even if you move your speakers).

Those speakers are from different price categories. 700-series speakers are always a couple of times more expensive than 600-series.

I would like to see a review of some Totem speakers. I own the Totem Rainmakers and they are one of the best bookshelf speakers I have heard. Made in Canada. I am using them with an older Audiolab 8000A amplifier (when they were actually made in England) and a Marantz CD63 Special edition cd player. Thanks! I always enjoy your channel.

My 705 speakers still sound great. I purchased the KEF LS50 Metas to replace them, but after six months, I hooked the 705s back. Sounds way better and plays louder.

Makes you think what a bullshit this hobby and their constant "improvements" are right? I have amp from 70s that I would not change for almost anything new.
@howmit63613 жыл бұрын
So, valid comments about comparing speakers from two different ranges. I would much rather see a comparison between equal models. The old 705 adjusted for inflation new would probably be twice as much as the new 606. BUT, what is interesting, is that used, the 705 can be had for what the new 606 S2 retails for. If you can find one that is. Apparently people liked them so much there are not a lot on the used market. This may support my confirmation bias that old high end will best new at the same price - 705s at around 1k, 606 S2 at 900. Without knowing anything about either, one would think that the 705 probably goes lower because of the bigger cabinet, and unless the crossover is botched, might have better vertical off axis response. The time alignment may be better as well.
@knockoutfloors48483 жыл бұрын
On the new Anniversary 6 series, you just pop the metal sorround off from around the tweeter unit. It is not glued, justheld on with some plastic tabs, very easy to pop off. Then it reveals 2 screws that are holding the tweeter unit in. Once the screws removed, tweeter pulls out, don't pull too far, as you have to disconnect the positive and negative slider cables from the back of tweeter unit.
@JuanLega3 жыл бұрын
It's not an orange to oranges comparison. The old 705s should be compared to the new 705 S2. The 600 series is lower in class from the 700s and therefore the quality is lower. .

I believe the new speaker cone material is *Endumax* from Teijin Aramid. "Endumax, an innovative and superior cone material with performance beyond woven composites, has only recently been introduced to the industry. This new material is initially being introduced in a couple of different forms - woven fabrics, a cross-ply sheet of two or more layers of unidirectional material, and short cut reinforcement fibers as for enhancing the performance of wet laid paper pulp cones. The material is light and stiff, with a high Young’s modulus and high damping." --- "The stiffness for a given cone weight and geometry is greater than polypropylene and quality paper cones. From a speaker designer’s perspective, it is possible for extremely wide cone body angles (shallow cone), smaller voice coil diameters, and/or smaller magnetic systems to achieve comparable or superior results to existing speaker cone solutions."

Back in the days B&W was good quality and design. Company was sold I think, then got separate again. I liked them before, but can not think they make as good speakers as they did, compared to value for money. It will be nice to see all videoes, what is pros and cons about both speakers.

i have the B&W CDM1 which is similar but from the early 90's. i changed the parts from electrolytic caps to foil and changed the coil to a lower resistance one. now i have the problem of dying tweeters again because the ferrofluid inside starts to dry and the tweeters then stop to move and even the coil then burns out because it draws more current. the ferrofluid tweeters are crap. i have wonderful vifa ring tweeters with the kind of phase plug in the middle. they are phantastic but i need a new case now.

Wonder if the old ones were made in the UK? I think you have to go to the 800 series now to find an UK system.

Yes indeed, the old 700 series, as well as the rest of their range back in those days were made in Worthing England , or at least so it said on the label/plate in the back . I used to have a surround package from the old 600 S3 , consisting of LCR 600S3 , DS 6S3 and ASW650. Even that 600 series as a starting point in B&W was all made in England. Different times no doubt. Yes, nowadays only their top offer 800 is made in England. Regards .

you need to check out the b&w 601s3s really great pick up on the used market. a good contender to upgrade crossover also! I personally have a pair with clarity cap csa on woofer and one csa and one cmr on the tweeter, along with mills resistors as upgrade using rutchos design to reduce that excessive b&w sparkle!

In my room, my 706s brass band sounds like wooden instruments instead of brass. My made speakers brass band sounds like brass instruments instead of wood. And the piano sound on my 706s is "blong blong". But the piano sound on my made speakers "gling gling". And the voice sound on the 706s is 2D and not "throaty" enough. The brass band and piano on my made speakers absolutely smokes the 706s. Either my room really sucks treble or the 706s lack treble. I use the 706s as monitors cos my room acoustics varies a lot in the bass. I copied the 706 sound best I could with my made speakers and they sounded at least as ordinarily as the 706s. Then I tweaked my made speakes just a little bit in the treble and now they smoke the 706s. But!...I couldn't possibly make speakers without good expensive monitors, and they are a game changer for my speaker building habit. They were the thing that really got me going (they improved my speaker building so much).

On older 602 models you could reach inside the box with your hands, and twist the tweeter assembly 30 degrees and it came off. Almost like a "bayonet lock".

Im actually shocked that Danny doesn't even look into the specs or details of what is involved .. The cone material is called "Continuum" .. because Kevlar is a trademarked material by another company.. so B&W designed their own more for sound performance* 800 D3 had it first , I believe.*
