Hi, I know many people on the net think Alexis is clear or bright winter, but to me is obvious she is more delicate and my impression is she is a summer or in 12 color system she would be a soft summer . As for Zoey she is 100 % a winter type. Nice video Merriam :)

Yeah I agree the best colors for Alexis if I were to use the seasonal approach are the soft summer colors, but she would never be classified as such because of her bright eyes and high contrast coloring (which is a part of my issue with the way the seasonal approach is set up)!

Yes true! Basically whatever is brightest your eyes are drawn too...whether it's the flesh or the colour of the dress just depends on which side of the fence they sit on...if the skin and dress is the same level of brightness, you get balance therefore see the person as a whole! makes sense!

Wow, it must have taken a lot of time, finding all these pictures! Very much appreciated - I can definitely follow your arguments here...especially the one about sometimes being drawn to look at the garment and sometimes at the person. I‘m definitely a Zoey...explains a lot for me 😁
@1010divajap3 жыл бұрын
I don't think I can look at either of these women and see just their skin - your eye takes in the whole presentation, the person. Even in pictures, one can sense the personality and vibe of a person, and what it comes down to for me is far more simple - Alexis gives off a reserved, subtle vibe while Zoey gives off an extroverted, high energy vibe. Alexis glows in softer, more subtle colors and Zoey's outgoing, energetic self needs very vibrant color. I feel like Zoey's look is more versatile in a way and that, to me, is because sensitive, subtle people can become overwhelmed easily whereas the stronger Zoey types are so vibrant they can make almost anything work. To me, this whole video is so so detailed that I wonder, even if one can really nail down their perfect palate, what are the chances you can find your style, the right form for your figure, nd then the abs. perfect chroma all in one garment. This is too much detail for someone like me, that's all. It seems like too much thought, but maybe I'm just not seeing what others are seeing. I only know that I am more striking than gentle looking, look better in cool, vibrant shades, and that sometimes I enjoy toning things down and being more subtle, so I can do that with color. color is more than just what looks perfect on you - it's expression of other things hard to verbalize.

I’ve been curious, if you are a soft and warm tone how can you wear white to your wedding if you really want to look glowy and your best? I’d love to see a mention of which whites each type can wear..and maybe blacks too? Could be a video on neutrals for each types when the occasion calls us to wear it even when it’s not our best color. White for your wedding and blacks for funerals etc.
@merriamstyle6 жыл бұрын
I have a video on that! Whites for the seasons. Back then, I called 'warm and delicate' 'Autumn'. But now I'm moving away from calling it in a seasonal way. You could check it out. I explain it more in the video, but to answer your question, cream would be a 'warm and delicate' white. :)

✊. Cream yes! I forget to call it that. Cuz ivory can vary ☺. Perfect. And i know for me the blacks just need to be softer, browner, greener or grayer. I cannot do a really intense, vibrant, clear, or deep black. Those proper blacks tho will look really intense vibrant and deep on me :). Just like Miriam's great video on Classic vs Gamine showed :). I've just learned to call it an Autumn black now. :) You'll get better at spotting stuff with practice. Its most obvious to me if i go to a store like Ross and compare the black shoes. You'll get an eye for it once you gather many objects of one color group and hold them all next to each other :)👏👍.

MJade Thank you for the tip! I’m beginning to see that too. For me, I know I’m warm but I’ve been tripped up on whether I’m soft or bright. People tell me I look great in certain bright colors but I think I look best in soft. Still trying to figure it out but I’m leaning toward soft I think. Something I was wondering is if soft vs bright is a spectrum so maybe I’m somewhere near the middle? Sometimes too muted doesn’t look as good on me. But too bright looks bad too 🤷♀️
@merriamstyle6 жыл бұрын
Yes! Soft and bright is a spectrum in my opinion. As your skin has less blue in it, the eye will read it less and less as a pure blue undertone and more 'mixed' with the other colors. And of course when you mix yellow and red into blue, you will get a muted blue. :) Don't listen to those people! I will get compliments when I wear bright colors but they'll often be 'oh I love that color dress on you'!! Which really means in my opinion...'I saw that dress before I saw you and I love bright colors'! When I wear my own colors (cool and muted), I get weird compliments like....'I like your........earrings!!!' (and of course I take that to mean that people may not really be able to put their finger on what they like, especially if they hesitate but get this feeling that I look nice, and find some random compliment). :)

Thank you for doing this! I keep reading comments about how summers (winters in your system, which I very much prefer because cool/muted screams winter to me) are boring. Does Alexis ever look boring in her colors!? I think all the seasons are awesome, but there's something particularly classy and graceful about winters :) My family doesn't understand why I wear muted lipstick, and grayish stuff so often...my sister teases me about being dull. I look a little off in other stuff though, and I've learned to appreciate the effect of muted cool things (my profile picture is me NOT wearing my best colors, and you can tell...). Winters should quit trying to wear what others wear and rock grays ;)

I would like to see some examples of celebrities who have certain characteristics combating with others, which make it difficult to classify which spectrum they're in. My reason for this is because I use to struggle so much figuring out if I was a Soft Summer or a Soft Autumn. I'm aware that you're taking a new approach compared to the season system, but Im quite use to using seasonal descriptions; so please bear with me. An example would be someone with cool toned hair, neutral skin tone, and warm eyes. I'm also aware that true neutral skin is almost impossible to find, but I use the term because I still find that it differs from someone who's predominantly warm or cool. I feel like I don't see anyone making videos of celebrity examples on us "confusing types" and it could help others understand what variables go into classifying one's coloring.

I do not look good in orange and yellow, nor burgundy or berry. My best colour is royal blue, but I also look good in a pale mint, and anything frosty. No pastels, though! I can wear gold jewelry, but it has to be a very pale gold. Silver always looks good on me. I have no idea what season I am, I used to think I was a winter, but as I tan, there is not enough contrast in my colouring.

Hey Merriam, first of all I love your work. I have been doing a lot of research on color analysis and I come back to your videos a lot. It appears to me that I have a hard time seeing myself correctly though. I have been typed a Clear/Bright Winter by a salon that worked with the 12 seasons. Now I see that Zoey looks slightly yellow-ish in the bright purple dress. I have also noticed this with myself in this particular color and a few more, that they make me look a bit yellow or green-ish. And while I don't necessarily think it looks bad it does look slightly off to me and I do refrain from wearing these colors. Is there any explanation for this? I have thought I might be olive skin, but I'm not sure if that's it.
@katyakomlach61716 жыл бұрын
I have a question :) I remember in one of your previous videos you talked about "neutral" skin tone and how it almost never exists in reality, so a person always hits either a warmer or cooler side. And if you're let's say cooler, but very close to that "neutral" zone, does it mean that slightly warmer tones will look better on you, than on somebody with a cooler, less "neutral" undertone? And same with radiance? Let's say you're closer to the middle on that radiance scale, does that mean that you can get away with wearing a bright color, even if you're technically on the muted side? Hope I managed to express my thoughts in a clear way :D Thanks!
@Terinka145 жыл бұрын
I also wonder about that, because I think I am very close to the neutral, slightly on the warm side. I often like wearing "cool and delicate" clothing, and I think it doesnt make look too bad.

Hi Merriam! Do you plan on making any videos on hair colors for the seasons? It's an interesting subject that I would love to know your opinion on. Often in color season theory it's assumed that everyone is balanced. If you're a summer/winter your skin and hair are both cool toned. That makes it impossible for those that aren't 100% cool or warm (like redheads with cool skin) to fit in any category! I'm quite certain I'm a summer according to your system, as my skin is very cool toned and probably also high chroma. However, my natural hair color is a coppery dark blonde, i.e. warm toned. I've been dying my hair light ash blonde for the last years, because I've felt it suits me better, but the bleach has really damaged my hair and I was advised to grow out my natural color. Many people say that one always looks the best in their natural hair color, but according to all color season theory that is simply not true. What do you think people like me should do with our hair to look our best? Thanks for making great videos! xx
@Denise-sj3si6 жыл бұрын
Same here. I am warm and delicate/ muted(?). I've been dying my hair for years to a rich auburn red, but my natural color is a super dark (almost black) brown. I've always been told I look best in red hair, but I think it's because my eyes are clear and bright green. The rest of me is naturally very muted/dark beige skin. I thought maybe it was because I was an "autumn". It's a bit confusing, so I would like to know the answer to what hair color best suits people with contrasting features. :)

Hi Merriam! I've been watching your videos for quite some time and I have learned SO much from you in your breakdowns about Kibbe and color! Very exciting stuff. I always come home from work and see if you've posted anything because your videos are my favorite way to unwind after a long day. I do have some questions I'd love to see you answer. 1) what does weight gain looks like on ALL the body types? what things should people watch out for when trying to figure out their type at heavier weights? 2) Does having long legs or a long torso contribute to your vertical line or is it strictly head size in proportion to the body, and is head size actually face size or would say... very naturally voluminous hair give you a "big head"? 3) How do you type a nose or jawline that looks very sharp or very rounded from the front but from the side it's the opposite? 4) Does hair/eye undertone give us clues as to the skin's natural undertone or can they be totally different? Thanks angel! xx
@merriamstyle6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Michaelle! The weight gain question is a good one. I would say that, although there are weight gain patterns that Kibbe mentions for each body type, I don't think it's a good idea to focus on them because it may not be that way each time for each person (even if they are that body type). Having long legs and torso doesn't contribute to the vertical line--that's only the size of the head! And, having voluminous hair also doesn't contribute. You could look tall with voluminous hair (long vertical line). So yes, I'd say it's more the 'size of the face' or the 'size of the head'....not the size of the hair with the head. The kind of jawline you're describing sounds like a natural jawline. Because it can be quite 'strong', but at the same time, let's say if the person is a soft natural, then they will have more fat covering the jaw making it look more rounded from the front. But usually those jaws that go out more end up having more muscles in them (natural). Of course, there are no absolutes, I'd have to see the jaw! And if there are no muscles, and it's rounded from the front, I'd still call it a yin jawline even if it comes out from the side. I think hair/eye color may or may not give cues....haven't made up my mind yet, but some people have asked me how it can be that cooler undertoned redheads have warm hair. My answer is....well I don't know I didn't make the redheads!!! :P I can't say *why* they have a cool undertone in terms of nature or science or religion.....only that they simply do!!
@sidecar_mama6 жыл бұрын
@@merriamstyle Thank you for your prompt and thorough response! This all started because in one of your videos you mentioned taking pictures in different outfits and colors and once I started doing that I got a LOTTT more objective, ha. On the Kibbe test I get mainly yin answers with some angularity in my face. I have always thought I was TR (in photos where I weighed less it's easier for me to tell) but the recent photos I've been taking are pushing me to dive a little deeper as to why. In my face it's easy to see the TR (triangular jaw from the front but from the side it looks round, small eyes, small lips, and when I smile I get two very sharp 'brackets,' and everything else is very full) but my body is tricky because I don't SEE any outright angularity... but I feel there is *something* in my body that is not pure R, I just don't know what. I also think TR lines fit me like a glove but maybe I'm tricking myself to see what I want to see. Your same head different body video helped clear some things up but it also raised a lot of questions for me too! I have definitely been considering a consultation from you but bills come first, lol. Will my foundation shade have anything to do with finding my color profile? I have a neutral to warm foundation shade (which does match my skin) but I feel like I look better in muted-cool shades
@merriamstyle6 жыл бұрын
It could be that you're a more olive skin tone. I also look 'better' in more warmer shades of foundation, but that's because the color seems more like a match because that foundation also is more yellow (which often means more green when it comes to foundation). But it doesn't match the slight coolness of my body. :( I have another foundation that has more reddish undertones rather than olive, and it's cooler toned for sure, but it looks pretty ridiculous on me because it's redder/pinker than the rest of my skin. Put on a thick coat of this foundation on your face, and take a photo in daylight so that you can see how your chest and shoulders look near the foundation, and see if the colors look the same! Hope that helps!
@melly30145 жыл бұрын
Hi Merriam, just a quick question. is that mean that for cool and bright undertones they actually cannot use grey color near they face? Because in season color pallete they suggest grey as the neutral color and even suggest to use grey as your eye shadow.
@jsmum1964 жыл бұрын
For a bright winter or a DYT type 4/1 like Zooey and Alexis they need deep, dark black. Alexis' black is too grey. Grey is for soft type 2's. They are both 4/1's so velvet black and the correct shade is all they need.
@merriamstyle4 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting! I love that you said Zooey is 4/1, her body language seems very precise and she sits symmetrically and her mannerisms are deliberate, but you can see a bit of the type 1 upward energy as a secondary....I hope I got that right. I wonder what you think my DYT is? I've only dabbled in the ideas so I don't know that I've settled on one for myself.
@merriamstyle4 жыл бұрын
With Alexis also I can see 4/1, but it's not as obvious to me, she confuses me in terms of DYT, but I also can't think of a better fit than 4/1 because she isn't a 2, 3, or 1 primary. She somehow seems a bit more fluid in her movements, that's what throws me off, but also a bit of upward 1 movement, but you can't be a 2/1.

I'll take a look at you more and tell you what I see. What are your favorite colors on you? What is your comfortable go to color? Grey? Or earth tones? Flamboyant Gamines are usually 4/1's. Bright winters are 4/1's. Bright springs are 1/4's. Deep rich black can only be worn by type 4's. Otherwise it's not your best color. Type 2's can wear grey and darker grey that's almost black.
@jsmum1964 жыл бұрын
@@merriamstyle In the end, if you can't figure out a type for someone you can see what colors look best on them. If it's grey or muted tones, type 2. If black, type 4. Wow interesting! I am cool and bright too and probably radiant as muted colours are not best in me, it sucks a little cos it’s not so easy to find true chroma colored clothing in edgy styles (being a dramatic, I look best in asymmetric clothing with a mix of sharp and flowing). It looks like alexis is less opalescent skinned than Zoey. Is that what radiant is? But wait... Cate Blanchet is warm skinned??? Doesn’t she have a lot of pink in her skin?

I found this video really interesting! Thank you very much! I am sure that I have a cool undertone and I am sure that I can't wear grey. Does this automatically mean that I am cool and bright and that I should go for bright colours that have a blue undertone? Thank you.

I've heard that the darker a color is the less obvious to the eyes is the chroma (bright or soft), do you agree with that?

Hi Merriam. Can you do a video explaining how to tell the gamines apart? I can never tell which one I am. And as a side note, giving some tips on how shorter gamine women can avoid being mistaken for a teenager/child in professional setting? Contouring soft, flat cheeks is especially hard with my babyfaceness/ Ingenue. Thank you! :)

Your analysis videos are truly amazing!! Thank you, you do a great work explaining and teaching :) Could you please do a video about deep autumns and deep winters? I had a hard time figuring if i'm cool or warm, and finally I am suspecting I am a deep autumn...maybe deep winter??? I'm confused!!

Would you say that wearing black is a good test for finding out if you are radiant or delicate ? Btw thank you for all your work, i really love everything you do on this channel. Are you planning on making videos about each/every kibbe type ? I find it so confusing. Especially flamboyant natural : can you be an FN and be longer than broad ? What exactly are we looking for when we're told to analyse bone structure vs flesh ? I find this subject to be really interesting and i'm eager to find out what you think. Sorry if my english isn't perfect. Thank you again for your hard work !

I hate that always the same celebrity examples are used for bright / clear winter. It made me think I couldn't be one because i have dark eyes, but turns out i am a bright winter. This color palette is always portrayed by women with icy blue eyes, as if that is what makes you a bright winter. Annoying
@elisaholm58396 жыл бұрын
I love this and I do agree with the system and have found it beneficial for me as a summer colour type person. What is still bothering me is those damn blacks and whites. I really don’t think black suits me very well. Pure white is slightly better, but natural white is superior to that. Why is that so!? Are my eyes just wrong with this? I’m a little red headed with greenish eyes and pale freckled skin like Julianne Moore.
@elisaholm58396 жыл бұрын
Ah I just read you don’t use the season words anymore. So I’m talking about cool and radiant. That’s what I am, lol.

Alexis Bledel is definitely a summer. Probably a true summer. That's what the "delicate" aspect you speak of is. Winter is cool and bright, summer is cool and muted.

This is fab, as a muted cool person I'm mentally saving these muted colors for myself. I too made that mistake over the years thinking I could carry off those stark brights, wondering why they never quite worked. Thanx for this! x

You’re not using the season category’s any more?
@merriamstyle6 жыл бұрын
People were complaining so I decided not to use the season's categories. Also I feel like it may actually add a bit of confusion because some of the season's color recommendations aren't what I'd necessarily recommend, and, my system is, in the end, very different from the seasonal approach, and it caused a lot of grief to simply explain all of this each time etc.....what do you think? Not to mention that if I were to use seasons, I'd call 'cool and muted' but muted has been wrongfully associated with 'low contrast' instead of 'low chroma' as it should be....etc. So in general, hoping to move away from seasons I guess (even though in my mind it doesn't matter what we call things as long as we're saying the same thing). Anyway, long answer, but I put a lot of thought into it so thought I'd share. :)
@laetitialalila73906 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think it's better to move away from the color seasons, although I must say your definition had a lot of sense ( summer is bright, winter is muted, etc) but people confused them all the time.. 😐
@luizabuna6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the long and detailed reply Merriam! I can see how preconceived notions about the former labeling you were using ,made it confusing for some people. I had a little bit of a problem with it myself at the beginning. The new labeling takes care of the confusion. Btw Love your channel.😊

Do you think Alexis looks off because there is so much white in the background? It's not am apples to apples comparison imo
@merriamstyle6 жыл бұрын
Yes, there's always going to be something different about the images being compared, but the pattern is the same in all of the images, and I gave a ton of examples for that specific reason. It's not the background or the lighting. Those were all different in all the images, and I saw the same effect.

So are you saying they aren't both winters and one is a summer? or are you introducing a sub class of winter? Also what did you mean by 'clear winter'. Some of your videos are so vague :'(
@merriamstyle6 жыл бұрын
Oh, I don't call anyone a "clear winter", that's 12 season. Sorry it's so confusing. It seems like no matter which way I try to communicate it, it can still be confusing! I only have four main categories, there aren't subsets. I also stopped using seasons to describe the undertones in my system because it was causing confusion. Now, I call the four undertones simply warm (delicate or radiant) or cool (delicate or radiant). What you may have been thinking of is my old naming scheme which hopefully will sort of be forgotten, but in the old one, yes, I'm saying that Alexis is a Winter (cool and muted, or cool and delicate), and Zoeey is a Summer (cool and bright, or cool and radiant).

Zoe is a terrific example of a Bright Winter beauty. Alexis is a Bright Spring. Alexis looks great in the clear, bright blue shades, but would look even better in lime-green, bright golden yellow, clear-vibrant-orange, and in shades of apricot, salmon and coral for more neutral shades; she should accessorize with shiny gold or gold-silver-mixes, as well as brightly colored plastic costume-jewelry. Both Bring Winter and Bright Spring look great in platinum. Shiny gunmetal-gray would be even better on Zoe than black; notice how plain black is good but not great on Zoe. Alexis should avoid black, charcoal and bright-white altogether.
@Arginne Жыл бұрын
Alexis isnt bright? She look good in the muted colors and her skin appears delicate not radiant like a bright spring. Shes also quite cool undertoned. i agree she should avoid white and black but a bright spring would be able to pull those colors off.
@MaryYoungblood-xy8vg Жыл бұрын
If you look at Alexis in her natural hair color (not her dyed color), she isn't cool at all. Clear spring not winter. Celebrities are hard to deal with because they dye their hair and photos often skew what undertones they really have.
