Meneghello probably just mentions Jerger [I haven't read it so can't be sure] Jerger was based in Besancon active 1800/01-1845. The pattern did not originate in Besancon, but Besancon became the main center for the production of the pattern from 1800/1801 with Jacob Jerger and his successors, & that is when the name became associated with the pattern. Jerger did use the Isnard deck as a model for his own, but with some variations. The deck Menghello used was a J.B. Benois [c1761-1775] engraved by Francoise Isnard [c1720s-1760], both of Strasbourg. Menghello's dating of 1700 is far too early, Isnard was only 5 years old then and it was several decades before Jean-Baptiste Benois was born. Junon, La Force & Judgment in Meneghello are replacement trumps from a different deck, their numbers are on the 7, 9 & 10 of cups, which the original owner apparently used as replacements for the missing trumps. An original Francois Isnard produced by J.B. Benois can be seen online at the British Museum site if anyone wants to see what the three missing trumps looked like. The game of tarot was often played with a reduced deck with the lowest 4 pip cards of each removed [the 7-10 of cups & coins, the 1-4 of the swords & batons], so using the three low cup cards [VII, VIIII & X] as replacements for the missing trumps would not have effected gameplay.

Hi :) Yes, I'm the Marilyn from the forum who posted the photos. I figured that's what happened. It's all so fascinating, endlessly so. Like a giant puzzle. What you said about removing cars for play makes sense for why they were marked in the deck doing double dirty. Thank you for sharing and watching my videos. ~ Marilyn

Hi, Marilynn. I have the Besancon that Deviant Moon published. It's titled, "The Resurrected Kirchner Besancon Tarot". And the info card says it was created from direct scans of an authentic deck owned by tarot creator Patrick Valenza. So it's pretty grubby looking. I bought it because I'd seen a Besancon on your channel, and I really like the idea of the Popess and Pope being replaced by Juno and Jupiter. The illustrations are pretty crude looking. But, it's interesting, isn't it? Thanks for the comparison. I appreciate what you do.

Hi Frances :) I considered comparing these two decks with the DM Kerchner, but I thought the Il Meneghello Besançon was more aesthetically pleasing. The substitution of Juno and Jupiter don't bug me either. xoxo ~ Marilyn
