Compass Harbor Trail is a lesser-known but delightful gem located just south of Bar Harbor, Maine, in the vicinity of Acadia National Park. This trail is a short drive from the heart of Bar Harbor.
It's a relatively short trail and it leads visitors through the woods and to the shore. One of the main points of interest along the trail is the ruins of "Old Farm," the summer residence of George B. Dorr. Dorr is often referred to as the "Father of Acadia" for his pivotal role in the establishment of Acadia National Park. While only the foundation remains today, it offers a glimpse into the history of the park and the people who championed its creation.
The Compass Harbor trail provides a serene experience, weaving through a forested area before leading to the coastline. There, visitors can enjoy views of the ocean, distant islands, and, on a clear day, the mountains of Acadia.
This trail is relatively flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for most visitors, including families with children. However, like many coastal trails, it can be rocky and root-filled in parts, so it's a good idea to wear sturdy shoes.
Given its location and the plethora of other trail options in Acadia National Park, Compass Harbor can offer a quieter experience compared to some of the park's more popular sites. It's an excellent choice for visitors looking to escape the crowds, especially during peak tourist season.
If you're in the Bar Harbor area and have a little time to spare, Compass Harbor Trail provides a perfect mix of history, natural beauty, and tranquility.
