EARLY UPLOAD for you! Please note: Apologies for the sound quality in this video. I lost it on my camera and then used an app to recover it! Didn't want to re-record it and lose the quality of the discussion. 🤦‍♀️
In this video, I discuss compassion fatigue and burnout. I explain the differences and offer examples on how to correctly recognize it in yourself.
I welcome your comments or questions!

Wow it sounds like I'm in the thick of it. Fainting spells, nightmares, wanting to abandon everything and isolate myself, always tired, always taking care of my 94 year old grandmother day in day out, no self identity, no way to plan a future. Over it.

I'm sorry. This is tough. I went through this for years after graduate school and realized I needed to take 1 year to myself to recuperate, find myself, and heal. I encourage you to consider, wherever you can in your life, pulling over before this becomes a daily thing for you. Take care

Thankyou for the talk. It hit home a number of times. Been up and down that scale an number of times. 12 years a teacher, 27 years a school counselor and care giver for my 90 something parents. I will share this on Twitter.

You're welcome Kirk. Thanks for watching! This is tough. I watched, as a 10yr old, my mother and grandmother care for my great grandmother who had Alzheimers. It can be so overwhelming to care for aging parents/grandparents. Hang in there

I know I'm preaching to the choir but self care is important, Támara! Be sure to take your lunch: eat with mindfulness, go for a walk, chat with a friend, read a book, etc. Have you heard of the book "The Fringe Hours"? I read it on my vacation and I can highly recommend it.

I think I’m burned out. Feeling so apathetic about work. And I think I got compassion fatigue from watching “When They See Us”.

I’m experiencing this currently. I am in this stuck stage that whether or not I get away I still think about trauma. Ppl are naturally overwhelming and toxic and it’s hard because I’m a huge advocate for mental help. However at times I feel like ppl need to heal and just shut up. They wanna sit around you and be toxic. I feel someone’s I’m the only one with the answers. I feel I’m the only one that genuinely cares. Sometimes I just don’t wasn’t to give a damn anymore

I'm sorry. I can't say I disagree. Some people are naturally toxic. The best way to manage this is to stay to yourself or find another circle of people who share your mindset. These kind of people can truly burn you out. You just have to know how to get away, avoid, or set the boundary.

I think i am experiencing compassion fatigue right now. I work for a mental health warm line and I find myself crying a lot lately. I am so emotional over small things, lately. I can barely sleep now. I am trying to do self care stuff but find it even more exhausting at times. Anyways, thank you for the video and explaing stuff to us. Take care.

Thanks for watching! And you're welcome! From what you describe it does sound like the early stages of compassion fatigue. You may be burned out and can "reverse the situation" by taking time off, getting away, taking more breaks, engaging in selfcare, etc. The sooner you manage this the better!

I've been a patient advocate for ppl with chronic pain for 16 yrs, meanwhile dealing with my own illness and my mom's cancer... this year I completely lost all ability to do my work. It's as though the idea of getting back to my flooded inbox full of stories of trauma and pain will hurt me on a physical level-- but the guilt of avoiding their messages is making it worse.

Compassion fatigue sounds like what I go through when someone floodlights me. It's quite draining.

So true. I bet you do! Wouldn't it be something if half of America, perhaps ethnic America, feel compassion fatigue? Would be interesting if we had some research.

I feel like I have compassion fatigue due to being involved with someone who has mental health issues and avoidant personality disorder. I feel that I suppress my feelings, but I need to be honest with him about how I feel, even if it hurts him because this is hurting me. I think it’s contributed to my panic and anxiety attacks coming back. I wake up tired even after a full night of sleep. I really do care for him and maybe he needs to really understand how his behavior is affecting me so we can try to move forward in a positive direction.

I'm sorry to hear that. This is tough. It does sound like you are also experiencing burnout. You are most likely exhausted and people who function like this often benefit from making some concrete decisions in their lives such as seeing a therapist, couples counselor, ending the relationship, learning better communication, etc.

I think I've experienced this but I have zero idea how to take time off. It's not only a financial issue for me. There isn't anyone within 300km of me that can do my job. Nobody. So if I take time an entire community is screwed.
