Saw death over 40 times in my life. Amazing band. Lived in Tampa for a while in the 80s. Lot of good bands and made some amazing friends. Chuck was unique and fit into no molds. He was such a nice guy. So funny and very engaging . Never had a bad experience at his shows or having a beer back stage. I grew up with him. in a literal sense. He was a year and a half older than me. So as he grew, amazingly so did I. I miss him, A LOT.

Wonderful. There's a reason Chuck Schuldiner, the lead guitarist and vocalist for Death, is considered the godfather of death metal. It's one of the few bands who have a virtually perfect discography. Here's some of my favorites from their albums to give you a good idea of what they do: Pull the Plug, Zombie Ritual, Symbolic, The Perennial Quest, The Philosopher, and Spirit Crusher. You articulated your assessment of death metal well. There is no question this music can develop your ear immensely. I got in to death metal at a young age when it was exploding in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I will credit death metal for opening my mind and ear up to amazing musicianship from any genre. Obviously there are plenty of Neanderthal knuckle dragging bands but some of the most amazing players on the planet have a safe harbor with death metal ultimately leaving room to really creative musical art for us beard strokers to behold the flesh and the power it holds...

Death was the first death metal band I got into back in the day (1990-ish). Mainly because it was the first death metal band. I tolerated it because it is so melodic and progressive at the same time. My favorite Death album is Spiritual Healing from 1990 (iromically). Every song on it has something you could grab and hold onto. Spiritual Healing is the blue cover art album with the evangelical preacher on it.

Cryptopsy came around in the early 90’s. During that time death metal was being more experimented with and was getting “heavier.” Other examples would be bands like Suffocation or Gorguts. Bands of this sort were influential to what is now known as brutal death metal. Good ear for being able to tell the differences in a band like Cryptopsy compared to Death. My recommendation would be Cattle Decapitation- Kingdom of Tyrants It’s absolutely extreme, but their use of melody is beautiful. This mans vocal range is nuts, he can scream with melodic overtones and it’s disgustingly beautiful. Even if you don’t end up reacting to it, check it out

My friend you just experienced one of the greatest bands in history. Chuck never really wanted to be lumped in with the death metal that you described. He wanted to transcend the stereotypical "death metal" and be more "progressive" as it were. As you have just heard, Chuck wrote songs that stimulate the mind with higher thinking and grander themes. Intricate rhythms, timing, dissonance, and superb musicianship was Chucks calling card. Excellent start to your progressive death metal rabbit hole. Lesprosy by Death is brutal!!!! Here’s some hx. The Godfather of Death Metal!! Charles Michael "Chuck" Schuldiner (May 13, 1967 - December 13, 2001) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He founded the band Death in 1983 and was their lead vocalist until his death in 2001. His obituary in the January 5, 2002 issue of UK's Kerrang! magazine said that "Chuck Schuldiner was one of the most significant figures in the history of metal."[1] Schuldiner was ranked No. 10 in Joel McIver's book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists in 2009 and No. 20 in March 2004 Guitar World's "The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists".[2] Schuldiner founded the publishing company Mutilation Music in 1987, affiliated with performance rights organization BMI. Schuldiner died in 2001 after a two-year battle with glioma.

You could say most death metal is themed around the more grotesque side of the human soul and the horrors it can do. Particularly the early bands like death and morbid angel. Who have more of a spiritual and occult element to the writing of their songs. Death definitely gave death metal it's name, but the style of music (especially in the 80's) has more of that thrash style to it and bands like Sepultura and Napalm Death may have had a hand in inspiring the early death metal bands. The genre then flourished and broadened with more of the gutteral vocals in the 90's.

Chuck Schuldiner had such good lyrics and was such an emotive guitar player. Glad you liked it. It can be a difficult genre to get into. I'd still recommend the Death song "Symbolic" as I think it's their best song... But I also think a really cool idea would be to go back to their first album (and essentially the pioneering death metal album) "Scream Bloody Gore" from 1987. Every song on that album is pretty much based off of a horror movie, so it's perfect for Halloween. The coolest song from that album IMHO is "Evil Dead" and they have an excellent fan-made music video showing clips from the 1981 Evil Dead movie: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3a8dJaNZdObasU

Check out "Ghost of Perdition", "The Grand Conjuration", "Blackwater Park", "Heir Apparent", "Godhead's Lament", "Forest of October" just for a few to start with. It is very complex musically, but more melodic than standard death metal, with occasional sections of clean singing. Might be more accessible, from a certain POV, than straight death metal. Very moody, dark, creepy.

Try Cold, Initiate, Immortal Army of One. If you want to go earlier and more extreme, the album Scepter of the Ancients is widely regarded as a gem. Finally! Good approach to go back to the roots of death metal... and sure death are the godfathers... BUT ;) starting as a very punk sounding extreme thrash band, call it death metal, with their debut scream bloody gore, they developed over 7 records to a very progressive death Band... miles away from average death metal. And this is from their final album where they pushed progression to the max... not nearly root death metal. But still the greatest extreme metal band ever!!!! Listen to the drums, the bass chucks riffing... this is the highest level of death metal Going back to the roots means early death, morbid angel - chapel of ghouls, entombed anything from clandestine, obituary - chopoed in half, suffocation, dismember, deicide, carcass... stuff like that. I was damn bored by that other song you did... for me death metal became absolutely boring except for some old Bands... and for sure mighty death who always where a big challenge on the musical technical side... just out of this world Nice one though... maybe i could help;) now right on

This is Death's last album, their last two albums Chuck had become a master at constructing songs. He moved more towards progressive metal more than his original death metal sound. He created the sound, everyone in that scene copied him and he began to shy away from it because he found the scene and the copiers kind of bombastic with no artistic structure plus he already said what he needed to say. He focused more on the whole piece like the great concept records of the 70's. The true godfather of DEATH metal and when it got popular he exited stage left like a true pioneer always creative and always moving forward.

There is Death Metal and there is Deathcore, also allot of Death metal bands try to out brutalize each other or shock if you will. It's a different animal when entering the realm of Death Metal(core)
