Compensatory Walking in Left AIC Pattern: Neck non-Rotation and the Visual Ocular Reflex.

Compensatory walking and breathing is a problem. When a body can not rotate from side to side as we walk, compensations must occur. This compensatory activity becomes normalized. Thus, our gait becomes effortful and biomechanically inefficient. The body starts to hurt as a result.
There is also a visual component, called the Visual Ocular Reflex. This reflex, that helps keep our eyes pointed straight ahead as our head rotates, must work for both sides of our body, otherwise we drop off our left peripheral vision. Our brain then struggles to figure out where we are in space.

Fantastic video. Hard to count how many days I've spent re-watching your videos from the past. I remember there was this one complex video of yours called "The Necessity of Controlling the Frontal Plane" that I didn't understand at all in the beginning. Now I mostly get it, I think. It was when I was early learning about what is adduction/abduction (holy heck, both sides, etc. what is he talking about, eveything seemed different and multi-complex) and getting familiar with notion of P-PECs. It was the hardest one for me to understand fully. I re-watched it countless of times. After 20 times watching it I had a general idea only and was CONFUSED. It took many many, many tries to digest it.

The reason I began studying and watching PRI was because my right side was so tight and painful, especially after playing golf. All this was a 3 year progression. I discovered that I am clearly Left AIC/Right BC. My initial move on the downswing is a further dropping of the right shoulder, crunching my right SI,QL,hip, and upper left leg. Despite many,many lessons, I can’t break this pattern. I stay on my right side until too late to get a forceful “whip-like” crack at the ball. I can’t seem to get my brain to allow me to stomp that left foot into the ground. When working with my trainer (before seeing PRI), he commanded me to stomp my left leg down into an elevated platform then force myself up into a left leg “Heisman’s” pose - and could hardly do it. It “scared” me and I would try in slow motion. He had to shout, “stop thinking and do it.” -then I was better at it. How do a break a 50 yr golf habit that’s now killing my right side - mentally that is? I’m scared of moving left to finish my swing plus my left hip won’t internally rotate much so I further drop the right shoulder to get around this. Sometimes I can play a few holes without dipping down with my right but as round progresses or tough shot occurs - my brain makes me revert to the old habit. Is it drills that will relax my hip, back, neck, and arms?

Loving these gait analysis videos. I got pretty deep into PRI and various trainers that had online courses. I did need one remote session with a trainer to fix one issue I couldn't get to myself but 95% was online learning. I was on a career break so could pretty much learn full time though. I wish I could see someone like you local to me - I just don't trust a random PRI certified trainer off their website. I need to see their content on KZbin. But it's so dependent on your issue. I had what had been diagnosed as hyper kyphosis. After working only a couple of upper back expansion moves I gained 2 inches, got rid of the hunch and solved 90% of my pain. It's worth learning yourself if you're so inclined but if you're still having issues seeing a trainer like you is well worth it. But sadly it seems only in the US you guys post a ton of content so you know you're seeing someone competent.

Thank you very much for your videos. I am working with a PRI therapist and am absolutely fascinated with the whole concept. This is take 2 for me ( after a year hiatus) with this therapist and this time I am getting much more out of it having had some time with the concepts . Your explanations are helping me tremendously to hear the concepts yet again. I constantly have questions though , so having your lectures is very helpful and pleasing to me. As one is working with the exercises is it common to have an uptick in pain due to,the weakness on the left side ? I would love to see some moving videos of a person with healthy patterns and have you break down what you see as they move . I’m very grateful for your time online.

There may be some other gurus online who like to talk about Laic, Pec, or Pri in general, but the only one who is really dedicated to solving, explaining, and helping is Neal. Thank you Neal. After many things learned from you, I can conclude that the solution is simple in the ability to alternate from one side to the other, which may sound simple haha :)
@NealHallinan
@NealHallinan 2 жыл бұрын
That is indeed the solution, and yes it’s simple. Too simple for most people to understand. The difficulty is figuring out what needs to be “inhibited” to allow this to occur or why someone’s brain won’t stop using the inappropriate musculature.

Returning for an update ...you're right Neal, working out at the gym the last few months has actually made my pattern and the pain worse. The only things that actually help are diaphragm breathing and trying to open up my ribs on all fours. My brain literally doesn't wanna let my ribs go esp the left post med stnm and it's so messed up all the time. Working out of just fix this stuff it's making it worse. I've only been in this pattern less than 3 years. Really good video, been watching many of yours lately. I've been incorporating more yoga and breathing into m morning stuff and less heavy movements. I'm just like this guy in the picture everything from my right jaw and scalene neck breathing to left tibia fibular discolation thing happening on my left knee and hamstring..I'm having to change my whole mindset to undo this stuff and it's frustrating man cause in 2019 I had no pain and was in balance left and right.

I'm exactly like this, and can without doubt say that the neck breathing, tension, and head movement (position) is by far the worst feeling i have ever experienced. Literally tried to dodge mirrors for 1 month, due to trauma from the first time i realised what the... my neck, traps and head are doing. But also the point of no return, where i got to figure this out. So at least thats a great thing, you start taking it serious and stay committed to the journey. Still trying to find a prof, that can help so i dont have to be the first one on earth to figure this out by my self though. But its pretty hard, when 3 of them has told me they can't see the problem due to compensations. For them they literally think it looks normal, while im telling them that how i feel right now, is definetely not normal. He literally told me i just needed to go back to the gym every day again, and i would feel better. (yeah , never came back). Next session with a new one, im a literally guide him and do his observation job for him. Then maybe he can help me fix it.

Hi Neal! If I have an equal measurement on both sides of my Adduction Drop Test, low right shoulder / left rib flare / right side neck pain / flat thoracic spine, am I still stuck in PEC? How do I know when I'm out of PEC and over to Left AIC / Right BC? Adduction Drop Test being different on one side versus the other? Thank you!

Once the right leg passes the adduction drop test when tested by another person, and you also have the ability to adduct it by yourself, you can think of yourself as a Left AIC.

Hi Neal, my name's Jack. I'm stuck in a pattern and have been for a number of years (I'm 29) which I imagine has been building since I was small - however intensified due to a broken big toe on my right foot as well as injuries to my right ankle and knee over the years which my nervous system has obviously compensated for by patterning myself and now my posture is crazy crooked. I have also been suffering from OCD and chronic stress and overwhelm, which I feel is rooted physiologically. I'm working through it but the reason I'm commenting is because of a funny occurrence that I've noticed a number of times. When I've felt stressed and overwhelmed, there has been a number of times now when I've closed my right eye and have intentionally tried to focus my left eye to the environment I'm in. My left eye vision is blurry and although I see objects it's as if it takes a little while to actually register and understand what they are - as if it has slow processing time from my eye to my brain. Not only this, but my eye seems to be locked into a certain area of my field of vision, as if it's 'lazy' - and I have to almost force it to move to view different objects in it's field, as if my head does the work and my eye doesn't move on a regular basis. The reason i'm mentioning this is once I've done so, I then re-open my right eye and after a few moments my nervous system seems to be almost regulated - it is such a strange experience to notice how big of a different I feel in my internal state because of using my left eye. I know there is EMDR therapy which uses bilateral stimulation including eye movement to process trauma, so I can see a potential link there. I'm just wondering if this is something you're aware of? an eye causing a disregulated nervous system? I'm aware of the vagus nerve, it's position in the neck and it's connection to the parasympathetic state of the nervous system which because of my cervical rotation I believe may be impinged. But just wondering if you have any input on the eye itself? Looking to start with some PRI soon. Thanks!

I often hear in Pri that if one side is active, the other side is not. What does that mean in terms of transverse abs and other muscle? Does that mean that the none standing leg is completely relaxed? Would it be possible you can do a video on it? Thank you for the time you spend on these videos.
@NealHallinan
@NealHallinan 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't use the work "active". Both sides are active, but in different ways. I think the more accurate terms would be: compressing/decompressing or stance/swing. The body cycles between these actions to push it forward.
