Turtle position is one of the most useful and underrated defensive positions in jiu-jitsu. I know many argue that it is stalling, but he was proving several points. One point it is a useful defense. Second point it was frustrating opponents. Third when you get frustrated you make mistakes. Fourth it is a very powerful leg attack technique. Great content and thank you for sharing.

I've watched this over and over. It shows how extremely difficult it is to use any technique against correct Defensive postures. It shows how 90% of our usual thinking about taking the seatbelt, about guillotines, about getting the hooks, about turning away, about passing the guard to side control is simply false. The most interesting video I have seen in years. And this is just defense. I am eager to see the same thing but with reversals and escapes.

I am a black belt, but realize there are (and maybe always be) areas to explore in which I am a novice. This system is one such area (although I often use running man when people have my back, and it almost always works). Here is my big question - when doing Priit’s turtle, with the forehead serving as a post, what happens if the top player puts a great amount of force (a knee, a shin, a falling shin, a forearm with some falling body weight behind it ) directly across the back of the turtle player’s neck? And if that is survived (I would think that would be a big “if”) what happens when top player keeps doing that over and over, with more force each time? It appears as though it could lead to a massive neck injury, and that perhaps the Priit turtle position is relying on people being “too nice” to do that ? Any answers are appreciated

I love rolling like this because my athleticism is not so great and if my partner or opponent has better athleticism than me then I play the defense game, but I’m never in a rush to try and submit them but rather looking for the opportunity for them to eventually slip up. Interesting. Why wouldn’t good defense work if there were strikes? For someone to strike they would need to create some distance. When there is some separation couldn’t Raul stand up or move to a safer position? If someone stood up to soccer kick him, couldn’t he stand up as well (before he gets kicked)? I doubt someone would stay in turtle to defend soccer kicks. Seems to me like we get in the most trouble when we allow under hooks, 2 on ones, seatbelts, etc (whether there are strikes or not). I doubt that in a fight someone is simply going to throw Raul to the ground and land kicks, punches, knees, and elbows while he stays in the turtle position. He could have stood up in these matches whenever he wanted to.

I think the shear volume of angry, negative commentary on what is so obviously a live test of these principles should tell you that you are truly innovating Priit. When people start to realize how these defensive postures can be incorporated into a highly aggressive offensive game, this stuff is going to be taught everywhere. Everyone talked the same trash about the DDS and their willingness to give up position in search of leg entanglements. No one is talking trash now. This is proof of concept; not a strategy unto itself (although it certainly worked lol). I find it hilarious that so many KZbin grappling "experts" can't see this. Creating a systemic approach to defense is brilliant. When you have no fear of being caught in a "bad" position, you are free to take chances in search of submission, thereby allowing for ultra aggressive offense. Just my take, but that's where I envision this leading. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about your vision Priit, hahaha.

I learned some basic rubber guard stuff and Im able to land it on people that dont understand ehat Im trying/ going to do all the time. I wouldnt know what to do if I was the aggressor in a competition and came across this too. Obviously I am injured and have too much time on my hands, but basically what I’m trying to say is I can see it having a place. I dont think I would use it all the time, but I do like the hawkins and running man positions and definitely think those would be a great grappling defense if you are not getting punched in the face. Great display of turtle. I'm using this in sparring since the first Globetrotters video and it works very well. I don't get why people hate on his style. What's the difference between this and pulling closed guard, fighting grips and work towards submission!? Not practical for a street fight? Of course! It's a jiujitsu match. But don't be naive - your top pressure side control could be useless too if the other guy stabs your liver from bottom.

It helped that he's just better by a lot and could have won easily at any point. His coach basically just said "okay, now win" near the end of each match. If he hadn't played this way he still would have easily won 7 matches with 7 submissions... Just... ya know, faster.

Do you understand what we went to do in that competition? Turning your back to unknown opponents in a tournament is no easy task. It is easy however say afterwards that he was better or whatever ...we went there to test our defensive ideas

If system works is one thing, but if you teach people that default reaction in fight is to go to turtle then the martial arts main purpose of self defense is lost. This martial art is turning into a fun game for many people. Slap jitsu looks like a must for competitions now as a correction tool

I don't see how. In gi you would have to defend the elbow/rib entrance as well as the collar/neck. There are just too many attacking options in gi for this style. IMO

Why? I actually do not understand why people bring in that argument! If the mma would be filter you watch things through then more then have what people do in the bjj classes would be pointless Why not see it as it was intended - us testing some of the defensive bjj ideas under pressure in a jiu-jitsu competition If you want to see turtle in action in mma then watch Robert Whitaker turtle breakdown

@@DefensiveBJJ I hear you But bjj in my opinion should be at least somewhat usable in an mma fight not totally out of it
