Episode Notes:
1. Captured on real hardware.
2. I didn't include multi-packs like the King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, and Clockwork Knight releases. These were technically compilations but as stand-alone Saturn releases already, they didn't fit the episode.
3. Midway Presents Arcade's Greatest Hit actually says Williams Greatest Hits on the title screen. This is because Midway absorbed Williams around the time of its release.
4. I had a few hiccups during the making of this video. My Thunder Force footage was corrupted somehow and I didn't find the issue until the 11th hour. As a bandaid, I recorded a few minutes of demo footage(attract mode) and threw it in to finish the project.
5. This episode comes in at a whopping 40 minutes. One of my longest yet.
6. Y's is such a good game. Find a way to play it.
7. If the resolution of the Saturn versions of these games bothers you, try the Playstation editions. They are often more faithful in this regard to the arcade versions. I always found the Saturn to have a much sharper image, however.

Alpha 2 gold on the Saturn was fantastic (also good on the ps1). My one complaint about alpha 2 and gold on the Saturn and it’s literally a stupid complaint but in versus mode it only shows the names of the characters instead of their faces like the arcade mode. Obviously this was done for cut back purposes to make the game run better but my friends and I would just play arcade mode against each other instead of versus because of this reason (except when we wanted to play cammy)

I would really enjoy a similar episode focused on the PS1 compilations too, from which there are many. As for the Capcom Collections, the PS1 could display lower resolutions the Saturn wasn't able to, so those games are displayed correctly in Sony's console. A few Konami arcade ports are even better than the originals in the sense they properly ported assets to the Saturn higher resolution, so there's more horizontal real state. I agree that those more vintage games should always be in a single CD and at least 30 titles, much like Konami Antiques MSX Ultra Pack. Yes Sonic World is probably what they achieved for a proper Sonic game on the Saturn but they were certainly planning on abandoning ship for the DC the following year. The Saturn never reached its full potential due to SEGA's own management. There's no denying your points on these compilations are valid, as even to this day, upgrades like Super Mario All-Stars should be the bare minimum requirement to bring older titles to current generation systems. Improving on every area possible.

Parodius Deluxe Pack contains the first 2 ARCADE titles, the MSX one on that MSX Antiques is the first one in the series. These are the second and third games in the series. Just clearing that up for you. 😉 As for Thunder Force IV, there is a slight upgrade at least with the slowdown removed. But boy oh boy the price on both Gold Packs is not good. I do have Image Fight/X-Multiply, but on the PS1 as I found it for $50 (I didn't pick it up, but a forumer at one forum picked it up a little later for me in a San Antonio retro game store where I first found it, just ran me slightly more due to shipping). No way was I finding either the PS1, nor Saturn version anywhere else for $50. Even at that time Ebay sellers wanted 3 times more for a copy for either one on Ebay. Oddly at one time, the PS1 version was selling for a little more than the Saturn version, but they should be about even on price by now. As for Chase HQ and SCI on the Saturn (picked up the comp years ago for around $20), I find them okay, but have what I consider better versions on the Japanese PS2 Taito Memories packs, as those are emulations of the arcade games. Playing either game with a pad on either console though, is quite the chore due to both using steering wheel controls in the arcade.

I'll always go to bat for Midway Arcade's Greatest Hits. It was one of my favorite Saturn games, even in a library heavy with fantastic titles. Sure there were only six games, but they were the right ones. (Well, five of them were. The one that didn't need to be there was Bubbles.) You know what really stings, though? There's no Namco Museum on Saturn. Obviously that wasn't going to happen since Namco had an exclusivity agreement with Sony, but the fact that Pac-Man was never officially released for the Saturn is nevertheless a bitter pill to swallow. Friggin' Pac-Man! It's available on practically everything else! Its ease in handling Genesis games makes me wonder why the Saturn wasn't backward compatible with that system. If they had added a Genesis cartridge slot, it could have made a big difference in the console wars of the late 1990s.

So many compilations I didn't know of! Thanks for the video. Funnily enough, the MSX versions of Gradius, Gradius II, Parodius and Salamander now have patches to enable smooth scrolling in more powerful (MSX 2 and up), hardware. Gradius even has an "arcade" patch with graphics more faithful to the original and voice samples, making them better than the Saturn pack! 😅

Nicely done, as usual. I imagine that at the time of release, these compilations were a cool way to play games you may have never gotten to experience, but with many better, cheaper compilations available on modern machines, there’s just not a lot of reason to get most of these on Saturn today barring things like Sonic Jam or Parodius. The former’s 3D World, in particular, was an interesting inclusion, although I personally doubt the Saturn ever needed to have any 3D Sonic game for both the game and system to take off. It ultimately does make Jam unique, however

I am actually happy that Chase HQ came out on the Saturn since it's the best port I released better than anything I had played before. I played Chase HQ back in the 80's and there were no ports that did it justice. The one I had access to was the Master System version which was okay it played nicely but graphics were a far cry from the Arcade version and the PC Engine version looked good but it didn't play well also I didn't have access to it as PC Engine wasn't released in the UK in normal shops. So I was very happy chase hq was released on the Sega Saturn that aside I only wish it was in English lol. You know that's what I love about the Sega Saturn it does arcade ports really well and it's not emulation so no latency issues With regards to Mega drive ports at the time I didn't appreciate them as I already had a Mega drive and was looking to experience new games utilising the power of the Saturn. However I believe those people that didn't have a Mega Drive in the previous generation probably would have loved these ports and as a retro gamer I actually enjoy these a lot now. They do have some basic enhancements with regards to performance while they look the same you could say they are definitive because they don't have slowdowns that occured on the original Megadrive releases especially in the case of Sonic Jam

@Marc Carran 32x and 32x cd made matters worst. Due to sega consumers have to spend more money getting 4 or 3 systems. While competitors pay less buying 1 or 2 home hardware. Even the 32x cd is more difficult to program than the saturn since you have hardware to deal with (restrictive Genesis lacking expansion support, limited sega add-on and the 32x doing all the grunt work).

Great video. U got to remember that by the point that Street Fighter Collection hit the shelves, there wasn't a home port of Super Sf2 Turbo besides on the more obscure 3do, so that was the first time that we could experience SF2 eith super combos! What really bothers me about Capcom Generations 5 is that there was no reason to sell that collection with plain Sf2s if u already had the superiors that were released in a prior collection... Maybe if they had added SF1 (and maybe Final Fight) it would have been better, bc by that point, emulation wasn't a really a thing and most ppl were curious about the first entry, even though it plays really rough.

The Saturn was so much more in Japan than what it was here in the USA. What id really love is a few of the Saturn RPGs that never made it here to get translated and brought out as a completion today. Imagine a shinning force 3 official release, maybe even a cool special edition. Well I can dream.

It had the same fate as turbografx in the states. Potentially could've a solid run in NA/EU market had sega promote it the same way as the genesis.

At least unofficially people are tackling and translation products I forgot what the game was recently but there was a recent RPG that was released in English patch as well. Now if Sega would just apply their rights that and release those... Lol Sadly I think they're into that weird super game concept as much as I love crazy taxi and jetset radio and I'm sad that those are going to be games as a service.. :(

How the hell did Thunder Blade and Super Hang On not end up on a Sega compilation package with After Burner, Outrun, and Space Harrier? Especially Thunder Blade because of how different it was from AB?

Speaking of Wizardry, there is a Saturn compilation called Wizardry Llylgamyn Saga that is an enhanced version of the first 3 original Wizardry titles. The game is in Japanese but if you go to the options (still in Japanese) there is a option to switch that to English. It translates everything outside the name of your characters (which you can rename) and unfortunately the description of what spells do what and descriptions of the enemies, but those can be looked up rather easily online. I've only dipped my toe into the world of Wizardry, so I'm not an expert but these versions and the Japanese only Windows release appear to be more user friendly then most other versions with QOL improvements (although the Super Famicom release is pretty good too), including a dungeon map that can be brought up with a press of one button, although everything is pre-rendered but you can switch to the original Apple II wireframe graphics if you wanted to. There is a another compilation called New Age of Llylgamyn that compiles Wizardry 4 and 5 in the same engine (and same options) but the Saturn didn't get that, likely because in 1999, the Saturn was pretty much on it's way out in Japan. That one has an additional arranged mode for Wizardry 4 that you can actually control the monsters, however, most of that version is in Japanese only. Good luck for those who play Wizardry 4, it's regarded as one of the hardest cRPGs ever devised.

It should be noted that Thunder Force 4 on the Gold Pack 2 completely eliminates the slowdown from the Genesis original. That alone makes it a must-have, although I do admit that two separate discs was a bit greedy.

I was disappointed the remaining 'capcom generations' games didn't see release here. at least not until capcom rectified that in the PS2 era with the 'capcom classics collection' porting all those versions to the PS2. I did randomly check out an ISO (albeit of the PSX port) of ninja hayate I actually enjoyed that one a lot! I know a lot of these can be found elsewhere these days but I imagine there's something special about playing them on a system like the saturn.

For me the main draw to the street fighter collection was the arcade perfect ports of Street fighter 2. I already had alpha 2 and while gold had some neat stuff that wasn't a huge deal compared to finally getting to play super turbo

People who grew up with arcade emulators can not understand how this was actually a big deal to play these games at home in almost perfect form back in the day. In regards to Thunderforce collection if I am not wrong I think they moved the music to be CD audio with only one loop that faded out and restarted at the end making the track feel short.

Just watched a documentary on Sonic X-treme last night. Everything was so chaotic that trying to create that game that it almost killed two or three people. Sonic Jam seems to be using Christina (can't remember her surname sorry ) "boss engine" that she worked on alone at her home.

Sega made a big mistake developing it on genesis and 32x. The should've been exclusively for the sega saturn.

Missing the 'Bubble Bobble also featuring Rainbow Islands' collection, which features probably one of the most horrifying intro sequences on any Saturn/PSX game ever. :') Amazing video! Can't imagine how long this one took to put together. The MSX compilation really was an absolute gem.

I don't hold Technosoft's decision to spread four games over two separate releases against them, or Sega's pairing of those early Mega Drive Disney games either because in all cases the games were immaculately preserved. I'd take that over a long list of games with weird emulation issues and input lag all day long.
