Yes! Perfect timing! I've got a little pink drip coming from somewhere under the intake manifold on my 01 Tacoma and I was just about to put my own hose list together, but you've conveniently done it for me! I'll definitely give this one a watch when I get off work. Cheers Timmy! Remind me to buy you a beer 🍻

Interesting timing of this video. I just ordered all the coolant hoses to replace the originals in my 08 4runner. I figured at 320k, it might be time. They don't feel overly soft, buti don't want one to burst unexpectedly. I thought it was cheap insurance going forward. I also have a new water pump and thermostat from when I was chasing a coolant leak. Turns out it was a bad radiator. So it'll be a good time to put those other parts on also.

Good luck with all the work. If you're going to do the water pump, you might want to just do a whole timing belt job. We have videos for it.

Thank you for this, Timmy! I just bought most of the hoses recently to go along with replacing the heater control valve (for preventive purposes) and hadn't done the job yet. As always, you point out what each hose goes to/from (helping us to learn more about this rig), and you note the part #'s along the way (much appreciated!). A couple of questions: (1) if I'm just mainly replacing those heater hoses around the firewall and under the throttle body (not the ones under the rig and not the oil cooler hoses - yet), would I really need to drain the radiator? I just replaced my radiator not too long ago, so I hate to drain and replace that relatively fresh coolant again if I don't really need to. (2) I bought the colored silicone hoses. Do you think that P-80 lube would work ok with that material? Thank you! Hope you're enjoying retirement and getting to wrench and do more fun stuff!

I have an '02 Tacoma with the 5VZFE engine also. I've stared at that oil cooler many times while under the truck and came to the conclusion that I hope I never have to deal with it!! After watching this, I'm wondering if you think there might be any advantage to removing the oil cooler from the engine before disconnecting the hoses? Would that make it possible to get the cooler in a little better position/out of your way to remove the hoses? Just an idea. Since you had the guts to actually do this, I'm sure you would know if that would work or not. I've also heard that there is a kit you can buy if you want to delete the cooler all together. I've read that if you aren't driving hard or towing with the truck, you probably don't need it. Might be a consideration if the cooler itself is defective as I believe a replacement OEM cooler is $900.00. As usual, great video!!
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 күн бұрын
I'm not sure there would be any advantage to removing the oil cooler first before disconnecting the hoses. That shorter hose won't allow you must movement of the cooler after you disconnect it from the engine block. In regards to deleting the oil cooler, I wouldn't do that. And, there's not much that can go wrong with an oil cooler. They are built pretty stout and I've never heard of one failing. I'm glad you like the video.

Hey Timmy and Shawn on your 98 with the trans cooler not running through the radiator any more how are your trans Temps? Iam thinking of doing it but was curious on Temps, also I seen a guy put a believe it was 1rt gen radiator in his 3rd gen wich is 18 inches instead of 22in which will move it up 4 inch what do you think and he was running a trans color no hoses to the radiator. Also he was in Canada ..just 4inch up is good clearance. Any of your Cali guys running it that way. Let me know. Have agood one guys and thanks for all you do.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 күн бұрын
The trans temps are great on my 98, but I also employ all the tricks of the trade to keep the temps down, by turning overdrive off while climbing moderate grades 40-45 mph+ or climbing in 2nd gear at speeds below 40. There's also the trick of using 4Lo when climbing steep sustained grades. I haven't heard of the radiator swap, so I can't comment about it.

@FreeKanal
@FreeKanal Күн бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman Yep, silicone works too and is safe for rubber. I use silicone from time to time i think it is CX80 silicone grease that i got.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Күн бұрын
@FreeKanal I did have the silicone grease one time cause a leak on a 2UZ-FE engine. I used the grease on the bypass pipe o-ring that mates to the water pump. We had just finished putting the engine together after a starter replacement, and when we started the engine, we had a coolant leak that I identified as coming from the connection of the coolant bypass pipe with the water pump. I was pissed. So, we had to remove the intake manifold, disconnect the coolant pipe, clean off the silicone, and just lubricate the o-ring with coolant. What's weird is that I had lubricated that o-ring in the same manner when we did a timing belt job on his engine, and we did not get a leak. I also used the silicone grease on all the heater hoses with no leaks. But, I won't use silicone grease anymore now that I have that P-80 Emulsion lubricant.
@FreeKanal
@FreeKanal Күн бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman Yep, that's weird. Maybe it wasn't the silicone's fault, but something else. Who knows ;) So far I haven't had any problems using silicone as a lubricant. But I've never used silicone with O-rings, as far as I remember, I use vaseline all the time.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Күн бұрын
@@FreeKanal Yeah, I don't get why it failed on that circumstance. I think maybe the o-ring could have rolled a bit on installation. Whatever the case, I'll just use that other product from now on. I got enough of it to last 10 lifetimes of turning wrenches. There was a very small tube of it and then a larger jug. I figured I'd maybe run out of the tube so i bought the large jug. It's an overkill amount, but it's mine now.
