Nope. P220A is a Bank 1 sensor 1 NoX sensor. If you had a failed timing belt, you'd be looking more for P0340 and P0341 which are camshaft sensor (CMP) circuit errors. The engine will also turn over very easily since it's not compressing much of anything due to the lack of valve movement.
If you have a vehicle which has some age and miles on it, there are a few checks that can be performed to ensure the belt isn't starting to fail;
1; Cut the oil filter open after each oil change - This will allow you to inspect for small chunks that made it past the oil screen on the pickup tube
2; Occasionally drop the oil pan and inspect the screen on the oil pickup tube - If it's full of rubber debris your belt MUST be replaced as soon as possible.
It should be noted as well that a failing belt can potentially cause loss of vacuum assist on the brakes and take out the ABS system. The vacuum pump is cam driven and has an oil feed. It's not uncommon for the pump to become clogged with belt debris and there was in fact a recall for this problem in the UK relating to the 2017-current transit 250, Tourneo (which is the passenger version of the 250 chassis) and 290 models with the 2.0 EcoBlue engine.
Also - What's the final stages of belt failure? you might ask;
1: The teeth on the belt shear causing the cams and crank to go out of time
2: Valves hit pistons, causing the rocker arms to snap. in an absolute worst-case scenario this can bend or even snap the valves as well as destroying the rockers.
3: The lobes on the cams can be knocked out of alignment as they're press-fit onto the cam shafts, and the force from the valves getting smacked by the pistons can be enough to cause them to slip.
4: the engine ceases to run, and when you try to crank it, it cranks very easily and you get little to no signs that the cylinders are compressing anything.
What codes will be displayed when the belt fails?
P0340 Cam shaft position sensor circuit malfunction
P0341 Cam shaft position sensor circuit range / performance
A check engine lamp will also be illuminated for this failure with a "Service Engine now" warning on the LCD.
What's the fix for an engine post-failure?
Ford will generally recommend a full engine replacement, although there are plenty of people who have been able to take vans with failed timing belts and just perform top-end rebuilds to get them running again. This usually consists of a partial teardown, performing a leak-down test to look for bent valves, replacing the rocker arms, replacing the cam cover as this also contains the cam shafts, performing an extensive clean to remove belt debris and boom. It's great that you found a video about the Ford Transit Custom wet timing belt replacement, and it's always helpful to have resources like that when making decisions about vehicle maintenance. When choosing between the 2.2 or 2.0 engine for your Ford Transit Custom, it's essential to consider various factors, including your specific needs and preferences. The choice between these engines might depend on factors such as: Power and Performance: Consider the power and performance requirements for your vehicle. The 2.2-liter engine may offer more power and torque compared to the 2.0-liter engine, which can be beneficial for heavier loads or demanding driving conditions. Fuel Efficiency: If fuel economy is a priority for you, the 2.0-liter engine might be more fuel-efficient, depending on your driving habits and the load you typically carry. Budget: The initial cost of the vehicle with either engine may differ, so consider your budget when making a decision. Maintenance and Reliability: Research and reviews on the maintenance and reliability of both engines can help you make an informed decision. You mentioned changing timing belts, so it's important to consider the long-term maintenance requirements for each engine. Future Resale Value: Think about the potential resale value of your vehicle with either engine option. Some buyers may prefer one engine over the other, which could affect resale value. Emissions and Regulations: Be aware of any emissions regulations in your area that might influence your choice of engine, as stricter emissions standards may favor certain engine types. Ultimately, the choice between the 2.2 and 2.0 engine should align with your specific needs and preferences, as well as your intended use for the Ford Transit Custom. It's also a good idea to consult with a local Ford dealership or a qualified mechanic for advice and recommendations based on your unique circumstances

Ive only just found a guy to do my transit because it seems a lot of mechanics avoid doing them...after watching this video i now understand why. So many things could cause problems if you dont have the right tools or knowledge. Great to watch..shame about the advert overload

It sounds like you found a video that gave you a better understanding of the challenges involved in working on a Ford Transit van and why many mechanics might avoid such jobs. Working on vehicles, especially commercial vans like the Ford Transit, can indeed be complex and require specialized tools and knowledge. Proper maintenance and repairs are crucial to keep the vehicle in good working condition. Advert overloads can be frustrating when watching online videos. Some platforms tend to have multiple ads throughout their content to generate revenue. You can consider using an ad blocker or subscribing to premium versions of video-sharing platforms if you'd like to avoid excessive ads while watching videos. If you have any specific questions or concerns related to your Ford Transit van or its maintenance, feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to provide you with information and assistance thanks for the feedback

@sanumotorswithcharlie
@sanumotorswithcharlie Ай бұрын
It's great to hear that you found the video helpful, but it's understandable that you might feel nervous about potential issues, especially with the wet belt concern. The Ford Transit Custom, like any vehicle, has its own set of pros and cons. The wet belt design can indeed be a point of concern for some owners due to the potential for water ingress and premature belt failure. If you're considering purchasing a Ford Transit Custom with a 2-liter engine, it's essential to weigh the risks and benefits. Here are a few things you might consider: Research: Look into the specific model year and engine version you're interested in. See if there have been any recalls, common issues reported by owners, or improvements made in later models to address the wet belt problem. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is key to preventing issues like wet belt failure. Ensure that the vehicle has been well-maintained and serviced according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Warranty and Extended Coverage: Consider purchasing a vehicle that still has some manufacturer warranty remaining, or look into extended warranty options to provide additional coverage for potential repairs. Professional Inspection: Before making a purchase, have the vehicle inspected by a trusted mechanic or technician who is familiar with Ford Transits. They can provide insight into the vehicle's condition and any potential issues to watch out for. Budget for Repairs: Factor in the potential cost of repairs or replacements related to the wet belt or any other known issues when determining your budget for purchasing and owning the vehicle. Ultimately, whether or not to proceed with buying a Ford Transit Custom with a 2-liter engine comes down to your comfort level with the potential risks and your willingness to address any issues that may arise. If you're uncertain, it may be worth exploring other vehicle options that better align with your preferences and concerns.

Ok you've surprised me. I watched the lot without skipping. My eldest daughter has a 2016 2.0 ecoblue Tranny Custom and I've literally just got the "Daaaaaaaaad, can you change my timing belt for me". "Sure Love". Last time I did a timing belt it was actually a fibre Wheel (1980 3.0s Capri) after about 6 teeth stripped off it after giving it serious beans away from a junction. (Epic Phail but no engine damage !!) Pretty in depth video which I will be referring to . Just got to make sure I've got that big a Torx driver. So I guess I'd better go find a "How To" for my 2007 2.2 Civic which has done 150k and probably hasn't had the belt done. Actually, come to think of it..... It's a Timing chain and it aint rattling so scrap that comment !

Hi, Great tutorial should you have put new crank seal on timing cover?
@sanumotorswithcharlie
@sanumotorswithcharlie 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for providing more context. It's true that in some cases, Also if You need You can Change, particularly with older vehicles or those with low mileage and seals that are still in good condition, it may make sense to prioritize cost savings by not replacing the seal on the timing cover if it's not showing signs of wear or leakage. In such situations, it's essential to assess the condition of the seal carefully before making a decision. Your approach of evaluating the condition of the seal and providing cost-effective solutions based on the customer's needs is practical and customer-focused. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that the vehicle remains reliable and free of oil leaks while also considering the customer's budget and preferences. If the existing seal on the timing cover is in good shape and not showing signs of deterioration or leakage, it may indeed be reasonable to leave it in place during the repair, provided that it does not compromise the overall quality of the job. Always communicate transparently with the customer about the options and potential cost savings, while also making sure that safety and long-term reliability are not compromised. thank you very much for the feedback

Did this custom have air conditioning? I had to loosed the compressor and move it out of the way a bit to undo one 8mm bolt on the cover and the compressor pulley was in the way of taking the cover off too. Didn't have to remove the mounting bolts fully just undo them to move the pump about 5 - 8mm off the engine block.

Very informative video I can guess that everything here would translate 1:1 to a focus mk4 with the same 2.0 engine. One question related to the water pump: Is it worth changing it preventively even if it's functional? Usually with the "normal" engines, the waterpump is driven by the timing belt and they are often changed together since you are already in there, In this case, we can see it on the outside on the accessory belt; I got a theoretical estimate for a timing job for this engine which is including the water pump (probably because they usually go together), and that's why the question. Thank you and many more videos like this.

Im not sure if it is the same set up.You don't need to to touch water pump on custom to do the job. But can be done if really want to do it. But best do it after cover is back on or before you remove the cover so no coolant goes into the engine oil side. And again I'm not sure if it is the same as focus But 1.6 connect and focus are the same set up as custom Thanks

Yep - been there and we still haven't got ours back from Ford yet at work That was a 2017 Transit 250 2.0 EcoBlue. It'd just cracked past 47,500 miles when the belt decided it disliked having teeth while on the M60 clockwise before Kearsley interchange. The worst part was it happened in lane 3 mid, overtake... Having to complete the overtake just to drop back through all lanes as fast and safely as possible to coast it onto the hard shoulder was the worst!!

Hi, just had this done on my van. Wet belt and all over belts changed. After mechanic took it for a test drive, now loss of power and engine management light is on something to do with injectors. Please advise what has gone wrong. Van was running perfectly before. Thanks
@sanumotorswithcharlie
@sanumotorswithcharlie 2 ай бұрын
It sounds like there may have been an issue introduced during the work on your van. The loss of power and the engine management light coming on, especially related to injectors, could indicate a few potential problems: Injector Issue: It's possible that during the work on the belts, something may have disturbed the injectors or their connections. This could lead to poor fuel delivery, resulting in loss of power and triggering the engine management light. Electrical Connection: Sometimes, when working around the engine bay, electrical connections can get disturbed or damaged. This might affect the injectors' operation and trigger the engine management light. Timing Belt Misalignment: If the timing belt replacement wasn't done correctly, it could lead to timing issues in the engine, which may cause loss of power and issues with injector timing. Sensor Problem: There are various sensors involved in engine management, and sometimes they can be inadvertently affected during maintenance work, causing erroneous readings and triggering the engine management light. Vacuum Leak: Work around the belts could have inadvertently caused a vacuum leak, which can lead to power loss and engine management issues. Given that the van was running perfectly before the work was done, it's likely that the issue is related to the recent maintenance. I would recommend taking it back to the mechanic who performed the work and explaining the symptoms you're experiencing. They should investigate and rectify the problem, especially if it's directly related to the work they performed. It's important to address this promptly to prevent any further damage to the engine

The horror stories with the Ecoboost wet belt set up concerns me, but I guess like all things mechanical...driver care and servicing in a timely manner n you should be good. That Transit owner looks after his motor I reckon. Interestingly I noted in UK you replace the belts every 50k miles or 5 years. Ford Fil are quoting 100k kms or (120 months... yikes)..... I think I will get mine done at the 5 year mark which for our use will take it to around 45k kms. In Fil, vechicles spend a lot of their life in heavy traffic at not much over tick over.... heat stress being the main concern. Anyway, thanks for going to the effort to do this great vid and talk thro... really pro stuff. I learned a lot of useful info. That angled head power driver you have is a superb tool.

The timing belt replacement interval for a 2019 Ford EcoBlue 2.0 diesel engine may vary depending on the specific engine variant and regional recommendations, but typically, it is recommended to replace the timing belt between 100,000 to 150,000 miles (160,000 to 240,000 kilometers) or every 5 to 7 years, whichever comes first. However, it's crucial to consult your vehicle's owner's manual or contact your local Ford dealership for the exact maintenance schedule and recommendations for your specific vehicle, as there can be variations based on factors like the engine variant and regional differences in maintenance guidelines. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure the longevity and reliability of your vehicle.

I have a Custom which I bought new in 2017. It has only done 21000 very gentle miles. I don't thrash it. When should I change the wet belt? Ive heard it cost someone £5000 when the belt broke and caused havoc in the cylinder head.

My belt snapped recently. Lost the van for a month while it was repaired. It was just over £5,000. Lots of damage. 2018 van with 80,000 miles. Ford recommends 5 years & 100k. The place that did my repairs said they do one after the other. They’re snapping all the time. A very common problem.

The total brake failure that my son experienced while coming off the slip road at Junction 10 on the M23 motorway was terrifying and he (and his apprentice) were fortunate not to have been involved in a major accident at this busy junction. The cause of the failure is well documented - the use of the wet belt inside the EcoBoost engine causes delamination over time. Debris from it eventually clogs the pick up pipe and vacuum pump which then fails causing the brake pedal to go hard. The brake pedal simply cannot be depressed to slow the vehicle no matter how hard you try. He is self-employed and relies on his Ford Transit Custom van everyday. It is currently at a Hendy Ford garage awaiting a goodwill gesture from Ford - as it is a few months out of warranty - yet the wet belt was not due to be changed for another 30,000 miles at the earliest.The current estimated cost of the repairs are £1,800! In addition, the failure of the wet belt may have caused damage to the turbo and the cost to replace it would be £1,000 according to Hendy. He has had the vehicle regularly serviced - using the specified oil. Ford have a duty to undertake the repairs - and cover any additional damages resulting from the delamination of the wet belt but they are digging their heels in - offering a fraction of the repair cost.

The engine stopping should not affect the brakes , the vacuum than operates the servo will dissipate causing the brake pedal to be harder to press but brake should still work . unless some one can enlighten me ps i was a motor mechanic / mot tester .
@sanumotorswithcharlie
@sanumotorswithcharlie 3 ай бұрын
You are correct in your assessment. The engine stopping should not directly affect the operation of the brakes in a typical vehicle with a vacuum-assisted brake booster. Here's how it works: Vacuum-assisted brake booster: Many vehicles use a vacuum-assisted brake booster to reduce the effort required to press the brake pedal. The brake booster relies on engine vacuum to assist in applying force to the brake master cylinder. When the engine is running, it generates a vacuum, which is used by the brake booster to make the brake pedal feel easier to press. Engine stopping: If the engine stops while the vehicle is in motion or idling, the vacuum generated by the engine decreases. This will make the brake pedal feel harder to press because there is less vacuum assistance from the brake booster. However, the brakes will still work, albeit with increased pedal effort. Brake functionality: The hydraulic system that actually applies force to the brakes is separate from the vacuum system. Even without engine vacuum assistance, you can still apply the brakes by pressing the pedal harder. The brakes will engage, and you can still stop the vehicle. It might require more physical effort on your part, but the brakes will remain functional. It's important to note that modern vehicles often have multiple systems in place to ensure brake functionality even if the engine fails or the vacuum system malfunctions. These include power brakes, hydraulic assist, and other safety mechanisms. Your background as a motor mechanic and MOT tester has likely given you valuable insights into the workings of automotive systems, including the braking system

The engine didn't stop. The brakes failed because of delaminated wet belt material clogging the pick up pipe and vacuum pump.Without a functioning brake booster vacuum pump, your brake system cannot create an adequate amount of braking power.@@stephenjose1472
