Good video. 👍 I’ll check out more of your videos and pod cast. I’ve always been more into hunting use of firearms but the last several years I’ve been learning more of the ammo and gun smithing end because as you say. If you want something done right? Do it yourself. I’m no professional. Just a student of the game. Ive been learning a lot from long range shooters in reloading and gun smithing and applying some of the principles to hunting rifles. Watching your videos I can say I’m doing some things right and some things your doing that I have not been doing. One thing I knew I needed already. The right tools my improvised self made tools do ok or tools bought individually mis matched styles and brands get a bit slower and a bit more agitating to deal with. I’ll check out your website. I’m playing with the idea of doing some long range shooting. Something I’m working towards.

@paramounttactical
@paramounttactical 4 ай бұрын
@@PTS68874 no worries. Typically a 36yrd zero is better ballistically than 25meter. However…. Neither are the correct way to zero IMO. The correct, or at least best way to determine zero distance is to use a chronograph and a ballistics app. The 36yd zero was determined to be the near distance ballistic equivalent of a 300 yard zero. The 25 meter zero was determined to be the near ballistic equivalent of a 300 meter zero. But that was for an M4 shooting m855. So the moment you’re not shooting that ammo out of a 14.5 barrel chambered for 5.56, it’s not accurate. WAY off in many cases. You need to get your muzzle velocity, the BC of the projectile you’re shooting, and determine your actual desired zero distance. We’ll say 300 yards for this example. You look at your ballistic app and determine what the equivalent near distance elevation is. For my rifle and ammo, a 27yd zero results in point of aim/point of impact at 300 yards. Easier way… do a 30ish yard zero and then actually zero at 300yrds. Hope that makes sense and helps. Thanks for watching! -Gary

Wow, sure am glad I’m here to help you update your outdated info and help you realize you don’t know as much as you think you do. Modern, high quality rings should not be lapped. No serious shooters have lapped rings for over a decade. We have 21 century CNC machines now. Lapping rings is a relic of the early 2000s, 90s, and prior. If you want to destroy your rings, void your warranty, reduce surface contact between rings and optic… lap your rings. 🤷‍♂️

I wanted to add a tip about Vibra-tite VC3. Apparently, according to Vibra-tite, the liquid will never "go bad" however the solvent can evaoprate over time (due to age or over-exposure to air - cap left off while working). Vibra-tite confirmed that Methyl Ethyl Ketone can be used to rehydrate thickened solution. They also stated that you might even want to thin the solution with MEK prior to use on small screws like scope rings since the fluid is only supposed to be consuming a fraction of the thread nulls. On my first attempt at using VC3, I apparently applied the thick solutions to heavily to some scope ring and action screw threads and, after having let the screws dry overnight, I found it very difficult to drive the screws in with a torque wrench. I backed them out, cleaned the screws with MEK, diluted the Vibra-tite slightly with MEK and then cut the supplied brush (on the lide of the 1 oz container) to be a much smaller width (better for applying to short screws). After reapplying a thinner coat, the screws torqued in much easier. Also, don't apply the VC3 to the leading threads of the screws.
@paramounttactical
@paramounttactical 7 ай бұрын
I’ve never had any of those problems. I add a small amount to the last 1/3 of threads, let it sit for 5-10 mins and then torque to spec. We mount scopes professionally and do several a month. I’ve been using it exclusively for over 5 years and have used it on over a 100, probably closer to 300 optics and never had any issues. 🤷‍♂️

@@paramounttactical My apologies for the incomplete context of my original post - here's a much needed,and accidentally omitted, clarification of my post: the bottle of VC3 that I had received from Amazon arrived with a leak from the lid (which they refunded and let me keep). After having difficulties with application, I reached out to Vibra-tite directly. I received a phone call from the company and they offered a very thorough and informative explanation of the VC3 product, including much of the information that I posted above (dilution/rehydration with MEK, cutting down their brush to suit your application, proper application thickness and placement upon the screw length, etc...). My bottle clearly arrived with a loose lid which had allowed for evaporation of the MEK solvent, thereby thickening it somewhat. I just wanted to clarify that I'm a Vibratite convert (thanks to the previous Paramount Tactical scope mounting videos) and that Vibratite 100% stands behind their products and are seriously concerned about ensuring effective customer use of their product.

@paramounttactical
@paramounttactical 6 ай бұрын
Because no one serious about long range has been lapping rings since the early 2000s. If you want destroy modern rings and mounts and reduce surface area, lap your rings/mounts. Why do you think a $50 lapping bar is more circumferential than a $200+ set of rings/mount that was made on a state of the art cnc machine. Don’t lap rings.

Good bubble levels are typically more accurate and sensitive. I’ve done a lot of testing on this and levels will indicate angle change faster. But yes, you can use an angle indicate. The question is what are putting on the barrel to serve as the witness? If you just put a level or angle indicator on a hand guard those are always a couple degrees off from the action. Ultimately, if you follow the principles, there’s several ways to skin the cat. Thanks for watching. -Gary

Question, after you install scope and zero it. Can you take the mount off and move it forward or backwards on the pic rail to adjust eye relief (w/ scope still installed)? Or will that ruin the zero. I’d assume it would ruin it but not sure.
@paramounttactical
@paramounttactical 6 ай бұрын
It won’t ruin it. It might be off slight. Simply check zero and if a couple of clicks are required, do what you got to do. You should make those eye relief adjustment before you zero. If you don’t have proper eye relief, it’s going to be hard to get a proper zero. Mount, go to range and if eye relief adjustment is required do that then zero.

I appreciate the recommendation but I have about 18 months of videos planned out and that isn’t on my list. With a 56mm obj at 80x the exit pupil would be so small (.7mm) I’m not even sure such a scope makes sense to me. I did google and there’s plenty of reviews on it. Thanks for watching! -Gary

That doesn’t matter. Screw the scope base on and level off of that. You’ll be good to go. If your optic is level to the base even if it makes the rifle slightly canted in reference to the stock and trigger, everything will work. Or contact the rifle company and have them replace it. Your optic and ability to put rounds on target will work in spite of that but that’s an egregious QC issue that I wouldn’t let stand.

I’d level the rifle and make sure it’s level before I installed the rings/mount. I never level off rings or the mount itself unless I can verify they are truly parallels with the scope base of the rifle after they’re installed.

Maybe it's a stupid question, but wth... When do you know your eye is the correct distance from the optic? Is it just the "shadow" around the edges? I ask because Ive always had that when using other's weapons. When Ive asked, it's always brushed away with the reply "just move your head until you see the cross hairs, and they're centered". With that considered, I've still shot very well at distance - enough so to win numerous rifle matches in my youth. Would setting the distance so that there is no shadow be the better way moving forward?

I’m actually new to assembling the AR type platform but have been shooting that Rifle since 1990, is it more stable to use a one piece Mount over just Optic Rings? I try to buy when I can Top Tier Optics and Components for my application albeit just Weaver or Warne but 100% made in the States. I found sone really nice Warne 30mm Rings but wasn’t sure if a one piece was the better Route. Thank you for the amazing Video my Friend, stay safe and Semper Fidelis

You can. Doesn’t matter as long as it’s tight and settled. But you might need to move the mount due to fine tuning eye relief, so I typically get it tight, mounted, and then double check eye relief before I torque the mount fully. Good question.

Couple things.... you don't lapp the rings ? And any lube or loc tite will give inaccurate torque readings.
@paramounttactical
@paramounttactical Ай бұрын
No serious shooters have lapped rings for many years. This isn’t the 80s and 90s. Quality rings today are made in multimillion dollar state of the art CNC facilities. Your rings will be more concentric than a $50 lapping bar. If you want to destroy your rings, void your warranty, and have less surface area touching your optic… lap your rings. I don’t use lube or loctite. I use VibraTite on all firearms fasteners. It’s tacky and remains tacky for its life cycle. It keeps your fasteners from backing out and doesn’t affect torque values. I think you need to seriously update your product and technical knowledge. Times have changed and product development has come a long way which requires one to update their methodologies. This isn’t my first rodeo. I’m not a KZbinr. I actually shoot, teach, and work on guns for a living.

I am by no means a professional but it surprised me that you torqued your rail fasteners after mounting and torquing the scope rings. Is it possible for torquing the rail fasteners to introduce error in the scope mounting?
@paramounttactical
@paramounttactical 2 ай бұрын
I’ve tested that time and time again. I’ve found that tightening the mount cross bolts to hand tight (20-30in lbs ish) and then torquing them to spec once done results in zero shift. Any shift that will happen happens in the first few in lbs. Also nothing wrong with torquing to spec at beginning if it gives you peace of mind. I don’t tighten completely in case I need to move mount forward or back to dial in eye relief. Regardless, when your done mounting optic the most critical step is confirmation by shooting a tall target which I cover in part II of this video. No matter your procedures or methodology there’s always room for mechanical and human error so confirmation is more important than methods. Thanks for watching! -Gary

3:14 now isn't this the exact moment u want to leave your scope resting and verify your reticle is level to a plum line to earth, which if it isn't,nothing matters anyway because now your just leveling a leveled scope body to a leveled gun but your reticle won't be, even if your retical tracks properly...if it's not rotated inside the tube level to your final cap levels...it's pointless...
@paramounttactical
@paramounttactical Ай бұрын
The last time I checked, your reticle is attached to your optic and your optic is attached to your rifle so for your optic to be plumb to the Y axis of gravity, so does your rifle. Reticles are very often not plumb inside an optic so you have to level the optic first to verify reticle plumb. I do this for a living and I’ve quantifiably proven these concepts and methodologies through real world testing, not through unproven, thought experiment induced theories. You may not understand them, you’re welcome to disagree but just know you’re incorrect. Scope mounting is not an action. It’s a mechanical process of performance confirmation. That process includes verification of 3 critical performance objectives: 1) Optic is plumb to rifle or scope base if scope base has mechanical elevation (20 MOA rail). 2) Reticle is plumb inside optic 3) Optic/turrets mechanically track correctly. The ONLY WAY to verify all 3 critical performance points is to shoot a tall target. I get people like you in the comments regularly that pretend to know so much and make such definitive statements and yet have never once actually verified anything through a tall target test. You get some theories in your head that you believe but it’s all based on unproven theories and hope. Never once does it cross your mind that there are things you don’t know or elements that you’re not considering. So believe what you’d like, but I do what I do because I trust nothing and test everything and have proof it works. Do you? -Gary

@@paramounttactical maybe u read my statement wrong...i was asking a question..I was trying to understand something.....my point is...isn't it irrelevant if the stock is directly online with the scope if the reticle isn't inlne with the tube? Because at the end of the day the only thing that matters is if the reticle is north and south and zero'd to bullet flight path? I mean that's why canted sights work...they are 45 degrees to left or right and still hit where u zero them because they are aligned parallel to the barrel not vertical...
