Want to start seeds indoors to save money on garden transplants? Or maybe you would like to start a bunch and make money having a plant sale? Ever wonder when is the best time to plant seeds outside? Ether way this video will help you skip the trial and error and instead have instant success!
Step 1: Find out average date of last frost and write on calendar
Step 2: Write the number the weeks until that frost date out to 12 or 16 weeks
Step 3: Add "to do's" to the calendar as follows:
Week 12-16: Start cool weather crops and slow growers for personal use
(Group 1- need to seed in pots: Onion seeds, Celery, Leeks, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, Cabbages, Pansys. Group 2- Optional for earliest harvest- Lettuce, Spinach, Pak Choi, Mustard, Endive, Swiss chard, Collards, Kale, arugula, Parsley.)
Week 8-10: Start slow growing warm weather crops in pots indoors:
(Tomatoes, eggplant, Peppers, Petunias, Sage, Lavender, Oregano, Marigolds, Basil, Cilantro.)
Week 4: Transplant Tomatoes, peppers and eggplants into large square pots. Also start greens for plant sale (Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, Cabbages, Lettuce, Spinach, Pak Choi, Mustard, Endive, Swiss chard, Collards, Kale, Arugula, etc.)
Week 2-3 Start fast growing Warm weather crops in pots and cool weather crops direct seed in garden. (To sow in pots indoors (mostly optional for earliest harvests or short season areas) - Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Pumpkin, cucumbers, Summer squashes- Zucchini and Yellow squash, Winter squashes- Acorn, spaghetti and Butternut. To Direst Seed in garden: Beets, Turnips, Parsnips, Carrots, Radishes and Peas.)
On (or about) average last day of frost: Direst seed Beans- Bush and Pole, Sunflowers, Corn and Dill.
That is obviously not an exhaustive list, especially for flowers, so check the back of the seed packet and fit into the category the seeds seem to most closely fit into. If the weather does not seem to be cooperating or you get busy don't stress out if things get behind a week or two. Just do your best and work with the weather when you can.

Perhaps the issue you had with bottom watering was with standing water remaining in the trays? Chopstick tip looks like a great idea. Last frost date is a good average guide for Tomatoes and Peppers but my experience has been that growth doesn't pick up in those plants until the soil warms (nights in the 50s at least). Thanks for the nice video!

Thank you FGG. I was starting to get a bit antsy about this, so I think I should have about 2 weeks before I start.

Thank you so much- this is incredibly helpful! Do you happen to have a video where you actually show yourself watering your seedlings? Last year I did bottom watering for my seedlings and am not sure the best way to gently water from the top and water enough but not too much! :D

Great videos, I am binge watching! Where do you live? I imagine not too far off from me based on your last frost date. We are having a very long running winter here in Petawawa, Ontario.

Great video!! I've started my seeds already, too early I'm sure! Do you have heat in your greenhouse? I would love to see it in your videos 😊

Just curious what price you plan to sell your vegetable and herb plants this year. Also, did I hear correctly that you use potting soil, not seed starting mix, to start your seedlings? Which soil or mix do you use? I love your videos, by the way. I've been following you for quite a while and am duly impressed with your consistently high-quality videos.

Hi there and thanks for your question! Yes, I use regular potting soil. It is much cheaper than the seed starting mix and I have not seen any benefit to using it instead. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement, I really appreciate it!

Frugalgreengirl, can you tell me where you purchase your seeds? Do you order those too or buy them from a local store? I hear about a lot of homesteaders who order from seed catalogues but I am new to seed planting and don't want to go that route quite yet until I'm more confident.

Hi. Do you use heat mats at all to aid propagation? I use them for chillies but think perhaps only chillies need the heat?

Hello and thanks for your questions. I have never owned one of those, nor has any of my family or friends, so unfortunately I can't offer an opinion. Sorry :/ I agree that someday you will have the garden you are looking forward to though!

+Jamie Ellis I'm sure those work fine, but they seem overpriced to me. You can make a cheap Kratky hydroponics setup which will do the same thing for much less money.

I would not. use regular dirt or coco husk and spend the money on good lighting + put in a bright window.
