Want to start seeds indoors to save money on garden transplants? Or maybe you would like to start a bunch and make money having a plant sale? Ever wonder when is the best time to plant seeds outside? Ether way this video will help you skip the trial and error and instead have instant success!
Step 1: Find out average date of last frost and write on calendar
Step 2: Write the number the weeks until that frost date out to 12 or 16 weeks
Step 3: Add "to do's" to the calendar as follows:
Week 12-16: Start cool weather crops and slow growers for personal use
(Group 1- need to seed in pots: Onion seeds, Celery, Leeks, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, Cabbages, Pansys. Group 2- Optional for earliest harvest- Lettuce, Spinach, Pak Choi, Mustard, Endive, Swiss chard, Collards, Kale, arugula, Parsley.)
Week 8-10: Start slow growing warm weather crops in pots indoors:
(Tomatoes, eggplant, Peppers, Petunias, Sage, Lavender, Oregano, Marigolds, Basil, Cilantro.)
Week 4: Transplant Tomatoes, peppers and eggplants into large square pots. Also start greens for plant sale (Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, Cabbages, Lettuce, Spinach, Pak Choi, Mustard, Endive, Swiss chard, Collards, Kale, Arugula, etc.)
Week 2-3 Start fast growing Warm weather crops in pots and cool weather crops direct seed in garden. (To sow in pots indoors (mostly optional for earliest harvests or short season areas) - Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Pumpkin, cucumbers, Summer squashes- Zucchini and Yellow squash, Winter squashes- Acorn, spaghetti and Butternut. To Direst Seed in garden: Beets, Turnips, Parsnips, Carrots, Radishes and Peas.)
On (or about) average last day of frost: Direst seed Beans- Bush and Pole, Sunflowers, Corn and Dill.
That is obviously not an exhaustive list, especially for flowers, so check the back of the seed packet and fit into the category the seeds seem to most closely fit into. If the weather does not seem to be cooperating or you get busy don't stress out if things get behind a week or two. Just do your best and work with the weather when you can.
