Summary: 1. Troposphere Thickness at equator >>thickness at pole ( insolation / gravity) Normal lapse rate / environmental lapse rate = 6.5°C /km or 1°C/165m + ve Lapse rate = temp decrease with increase in height All weather activities took place in troposphere Note: visible light = 0.39- 0.76 micrometre 2. Stratosphere Ozone - UV C absorbed - ve lapse rate 3. Mesosphere Coldest layer + ve lapse rate Meteor burning ( meteroid->meteor->meteorite) 4.Ionosphere -ve lapse rate Radio waves D ,E,F1,F2 layers 5.Exosphere -ve lapse rate Note : 1. Temperature Inversion -ve lapse rate Conditions: long winter night,clear sky,calm condition 2.Global dimming = due to increased pollutants...sunrays blocked..therefore Temperature decreases

40:00 Temp Inversion, Wind calm, Long winter night, Clear sky have to be there. (Clear sky enables to lose the heat )...otherwise radiation would be stopped and would keep the surface air warm. Normal lapse rate is +ve when temp decreases with height (NLR Normal) But in case of inversion NLR would be -ve Global dimming - causes less sunlight to reach and decreased temperature!!

*Climate vs Weather- Monsoon type of Climate * Atmosphere - mixture of gases--> Nitrogen> O2> Argon> CO2 *Nitrogen - Role-- Nitrogen fixing bacteria( nitrosomonas), fertilizers, packaging, etc * Structure of Atmosphere- Troposphere-- Stratosphere-- Mesosphere-- Thermosphere-- Exosphere * Troposphere- Height (and temperature) of troposphere at the equator is more than that at the poles because of high temperature/more insolation/ convection current near equator --Height of troposphere is more near equator due to less gravity and height is less near poles due more gravity near poles -- Al weather phenomena take place in the troposphere -- Height of the troposphere vary according to the insolation/ season Short wave from sun is visible; Long wave- reflected from the earth is not visible; (Wavelength is less)-->Cosmic wave--Gamma-->X ray--> UV--> Visible(0.39 to 0.76 mm)--> Infrared--> Microwave--> Radar--> Radio--> Broadcast Band (Wavelength is more) In troposphere temperature decreases with height ( Normal Lapse Rate-1 deg C/ 165 m or 6.5 deg C/Km) e.g Mt Kilimanjaro; Graphical Representation Temperature Inversion- opposite of Environmental Lapse rate( or normal lapse rate ) ; in this phenomenon there is negative lapse rate; cooler layer below warmer layer ;;Conditions 1. Long winter night 2. Clear sky without Clouds 3. Wind in calm conditions **Global Dimming- due to more pollution there is less insolation causing global dimming *Stratosphere:- Temperature increases here with height due to presence of ozone; Ozone stops UV C; negative lapse rate * Mesosphere- less gases; coldest layer; 50km to 80 km (-100 degree C); Meteors -Meteoroid (in space)--> Meteor (in atmosphere- mesosphere)--> Meteorite (remains even after burning) * Ionosphere- negative lapse rate (D, E, F1, F2 Layers)Thermosphere * Exosphere- Satellite, Spaceships
