I got my BOP from Walmart. Got it as a foot tall for $5 and in 3 months it’s almost 3 feet tall. It’s definitely loving the florida sun! One of my favorite plants.

I put my new B O P in dorect sun today just after biying it . When you said they should not be in direct sun, I ran outside to move it. Good thing I did, one of its leaves had started to curl. It had been out in the sun for only 45 minites. THANK YOU for all the details.

I’ve had my bop for about 5 years and my reginae for about 4 indoors mostly in ga. I use both bone meal and blood meal as supplements but I also blend ripe bananas and water in vitamin and pour into the soil once a month. They are in my sunroom and I have grow lights for the dark days. The white one is at least 11ft while reginae is about 5.5. Amazing plants good info that I’d say is right on point with what I’ve noticed over the years gr8 video

Thanks for the tip. I found my first one yesterday by mistake and it what you call a hidden gem! I mixed up my own soil and added worm castings and gave it a nice drink of liqui dirt and super thrive because the poor thing was so dried out when I found it. The moss was so hard that even after leaving it in water for an hour to bottom water, the water did not move into the pot.

Very good video. I just got one from Lowe’s. It was kind of raggedy. The leaves are burned at the tips and cracked. All of them looked like that, I figured I could try to save it if it watched some videos. I’m new to planting so I wasn’t sure of what to do. I did get a baby bop from Walmart two mos ago and it is growing like crazy. But this one is medium sized.i was about to take all the dirt off of it and soak it in a soapy tub of water a few mins like I did the other plants I have but you said not to repot it. I have it sitting in the garage currently until I figure out what to do with it, in case it has pests in it. It’s been there almost a week.

I got my first Bird of Paradise plant 5 days ago at Wal-Mart for $20. It is 3' tall, not counting the pot. I researched several videos, & yours is the most helpful. I have big windows facing south, but they are designed to block direct sun in spring & summer & admit it in fall & winter. My roof overhangs by 2' & the windows are tinted to admit sun in cold weather & block it in warm weather. It surprised me how indoor light (except direct sun) registers at about 200 lumens on my light meters, compared to strong outdoor light, which registers past 2000 lumens. I will try an LED plant lamp, but the ones I tried need to be about 6" from the leaves to register more than 200 lumens.

I completely agree about the Bird of Paradise. FLF are too unreliable for good, regular growth. Monstera's don't grow in height as much as they grow out wide, which can be hard to design around. My Bird of Paradise is one of my favorite plants. Top 5 for sure! And 100% underrated.

Hi Marianne, thank you for making the video! I have some questions, I hope I can get some help from you. I got my bird of paradise for a couple months now. It was not in a very good condition when it arrived. There were some burns, marks, and splits on the leaves. But the shape and size of the BOP was nice. The soil came really wet, there was water seeping out from the bottom of the pot for a week. Under my friend's suggestion I took it out of the pot and dried the soil under the sun for a day. After I put it back to the pot I water it like every 2 to 2 .5 weeks. It grows normally, but the burns, marks, and splits never heal. The soil doesn't dry easily, sometimes even 3 weeks passed it's still wet, when the soil of my monstera in the same size pot has already became dry in a week. I don't want to water the BOP when it's still wet, in fear that it can cause root rot. I wanted to change the soil, but my friend said that could shock the plant. Because the soil is always so moist, it started to have a lot of fungus gnat, I can see the eggs on the soil. In this situation, What's the best solution to get rid of the fungus gnats. Should I do the hydrogen peroxide wash first, and then treat it with the neem oil soap solution for 7 days? Thank you in advance.😊

I have alot of birds of paradise plant and I bought some with multiple plants inside of one pot . I have one plant thats 4year old its doing good they like to be root bound. I don't take my outside . I try it and my leaves burn up and then I was told to cut of the leaves with a knife and that made my plant like ugly and one die and one survived. I notice the small ones keep pest ,my larger ones don't . I use water globe to water and I get new leaves all year . Thanks for the information I have white and orange bird of paradise mixed in pots together.

How do I save a cut stalk of a Bird of Paradise? One of the guys putting in my fence cut the stalk of my 8 foot tall 14 year old Bird of Paradise after we talked about the fact that it would not be in the way of them putting in the gate. I knew the gate would hit it when opened but I was going to remove and replant that part. The problem was the 2 guys there didn't speak English so while they were shaking their heads in agreement, they didn't understand me and I didn't know that until I saw what they did and asked them why they did it and why they didn't ask me about it.
